I Evolve 10,000 Times Faster

Chapter 81: The Forgotten Armory

The darkness swallowed him whole.

Holden stepped through the ancient doors and into absolute black. Dust hung so heavy in the space that he could taste it on his tongue, dry and old and vaguely metallic.

His boots crunched on debris.

Click.

The sound echoed off walls he couldn’t see.

Then the ruin woke up.

Bzzt!

Red light flared along both sides of the corridor. Ancient runes blazed to life on the walls, pulsing with energy that had somehow survived hundreds of years of abandonment. The light revealed a long hallway stretching ahead, lined with small holes that hadn’t been visible in the dark.

Holden’s 1,000x processing kicked into overdrive.

Swoosh!

The first energy-arrow shot from the left wall. His body moved before his conscious mind registered the threat, shifting exactly four inches to the right. The arrow missed his shoulder by a hair’s breadth.

Swoosh!

Right wall this time. He leaned forward.

Swoosh! Swoosh! Swoosh!

Three more arrows came in a staggered pattern. He ducked the first, sidestepped the second, and twisted around the third. Each one trailed red light as it passed, leaving brief streaks in the darkness.

Looks like nobody oiled the guards.

He kept walking.

The trap room tried everything. Arrows from the ceiling. Arrows from the floor. Arrows that bounced off walls at weird angles. Some came in pairs. Some came in streams of five. One section launched a barrage of twenty arrows in a spreading fan pattern.

Holden moved through all of it like smoke.

His 1,000x multiplier let him see each arrow the instant it launched, calculate its trajectory, and find the gap. He didn’t rush or panic. He just walked forward at a steady pace, his body weaving through the deadly geometry with mechanical precision.

The last arrow missed him by less than an inch.

He stepped through the far doorway into a massive space.

The main hall.

The place was huge. It looked like a cathedral of ancient stone, with pillars thick enough to house rooms inside them. The ceiling was so high that it was lost in the darkness above. Faint blue crystals were set into the floor, glowing just enough for him to make out his surroundings.

Crash!

The floor shook.

Four shapes stirred at the corners of the hall. Stone figures, each one ten feet tall, built from dense grey rock reinforced with metal bands. They had no faces, just smooth stone heads with glowing blue eyes. In their massive hands, they carried stone swords the size of garage doors.

Rank 2, 2-Star Stone Golems.

Ancient security systems.

Their blue eyes locked onto Holden simultaneously.

Crash! Crash! Crash! Crash!

They charged.

Four ten-foot statues, each weighing several tons, sprinting across the floor with speed that shouldn’t have been possible for something made of rock. The ground trembled with every step.

Holden smiled.

He didn’t need to hold back. Nobody was watching.

Asura’s Ignition blazed to life along his Star-Forged Sword. Red-gold energy turned the weapon into a streak of fire.

The first golem reached him and swung its massive sword in a horizontal arc.

Holden ducked under the blow and struck upward.

Swish!

The blade cut through the golem’s wrist like it was soft clay. The stone hand separated and crashed to the floor, taking the sword with it. Blue light flickered in the golem’s eyes as it tried to process the damage.

Holden was already moving.

He spotted the glowing core inside each golem’s chest. That was the weak point. Maeve had taught him that much. Ancient constructs always centralized their power source.

Golem Two swung at him from behind.

He ducked, rolled, and came up inside its guard. His blade punched through the glowing core in its chest.

Crack!

The golem froze. Blue light rushed from its eyes into the wound, then faded. The stone body crumbled into dust.

Golem One tried to crush him with its remaining hand.

Holden stepped onto its arm, ran up the limb, and drove his blade down into its core from above.

Crack!

Dust.

Golems Three and Four attacked together, coordinating their swings to create a pincer that should have been inescapable.

Holden activated Gale-Step.

Whoosh!

He vanished from between them and reappeared behind Golem Three. With one strike to the core, the machine crumbled into dust. He pivoted and threw his sword like a spear toward Golem Four. The Star-Forged Sword punched through the stone chest and struck the core dead center.

Crack!

[Ding!]

Holden walked over to the fourth pile of dust and pulled his blade free.

"Too easy," he muttered.

He walked to the far end of the hall, where a single doorway led to a smaller room. The inner sanctum.

Inside, the space was surprisingly intact. A stone pedestal stood in the center, untouched by time. On it rested a metal cylinder about a foot long, sealed at both ends with heavy clasps. It glowed faintly with a soft blue light, humming with contained energy.

The map Vespera wanted.

Holden picked it up and tucked it into his jacket.

But something else caught his eye.

Sitting beside the pedestal was a chest that hadn’t been there a moment ago. It was made of silver metal, covered in system runes that pulsed with a familiar blue light.

A System Loot Chest.

He knelt and opened it.

Inside was a pair of boots. They were sleek and black, made from a material he didn’t recognize. The leather seemed to absorb light rather than reflect it. Strange symbols ran along the soles and ankles.

A system notification floated in his vision.

[EQUIPMENT DISCOVERED: SHADOW-WEAVE BOOTS]

[Rarity: Rare]

[Effect: Perfectly enhances movement-based techniques. Eliminates footstep sound. Reduces ground friction by 40%. Ideal synergy with Gale-Step Footwork.]

Holden grinned.

He sat down right there in the ancient ruin and swapped his academy boots for the Shadow-Weaves. They fit perfectly, like they’d been made for him. The leather was supple but tough. When he stood and took a test step, the movement felt impossibly smooth.

He activated Gale-Step.

Whoosh!

The speed increase was noticeable immediately. Less friction meant faster starts, sharper turns, no wasted motion. And when he landed, there was nothing. No sound. No impact.

"Okay," he whispered. "These are incredible."

He tucked his old boots into his pack and headed for the exit.

The trek back through the forest was faster with the new boots. Holden moved like a ghost through the trees. He was going even faster than his usual high speed. The 1,000x processing combined with the Shadow-Weave’s friction reduction made him feel like he was gliding rather than running.

He reached the camp just before sunrise.

The fire had burned out completely. The wards still hummed steadily. Emric’s trigger-ward sat undisturbed beside his tent. Renna was snoring again. Everything was exactly as he’d left it.

Holden slipped through the ward boundary without disturbing it, moved silently to his sleeping bag, and crawled inside.

Less than five minutes later, Lyra’s tent zipper opened.

She stepped out quietly, rubbing sleep from her eyes, and looked toward the fire pit. She expected to see Holden sitting there, alert and watchful.

Instead, she found him in his sleeping bag, apparently fast asleep.

She smiled softly and pulled her jacket tighter around her shoulders, settling into the watch position with a warm feeling in her chest.

Under the blanket, Holden kept his eyes closed and his breathing steady.
