I Evolve 10,000 Times Faster

Chapter 58: The Rumor Mill

The sky was just starting to lighten when Holden came through the front door.

Maeve was already awake, sitting at the kitchen table with a cup of tea and her Ashen Bestiary open to a fresh page. She looked up as he came in, her sharp eyes scanning him from head to toe.

"You’re late."

"Five forty-seven. Technically before six."

"Technically you said six."

"Close enough."

He pulled the leather pouch from inside his cloak and set it on the table.

She opened the drawstring and looked inside. Credit chips. Underground currency that couldn’t be traced to any official account.

"This is from..."

"The Pit."

She counted quickly with her eyes. "This is a lot."

"Rank 2 fighters pay well. Get whatever materials you need for your research. Better paper. Better ink. Whatever helps."

Maeve pushed her glasses up. "You’re bribing me with blood money so I don’t lecture you about the dangers of underground fighting."

"I prefer to think of it as strategic resource allocation."

She stared at him for a long moment. Then she picked up a credit chip and examined it in the morning light.

"Fine. But you’re still taking a shower before you put on that uniform. You smell like horrible."

"Fair point."

Twenty minutes later, Holden walked into the academy courtyard wearing his clean academy uniform with the small silver crescent of Vespera’s disciple badge pinned to his collar. He looked like a normal student starting a normal day.

Team Soup had claimed their usual table near the eastern fountain. Renna was eating a massive breakfast with the enthusiasm of someone who’d skipped dinner. Emric had a small plate of fruit and his ever-present notebook. Lyra sat with her usual composed posture, sipping tea.

Holden dropped into the empty chair beside her.

"Morning."

"You look well-rested," Lyra observed.

"Surprisingly, yes."

Renna looked up from her third egg. "Holden! You missed the most exciting news! Emric, tell him! Tell him about the masked guy!"

Emric adjusted his glasses and consulted his news crystal, a small rectangular device that displayed scrolling text in blue light.

"According to the lower city informants, a rumor is circulating through the criminal networks. Last night, at an illegal underground arena known as the Obsidian Pit, an unknown fighter made his debut in the Rank Two division."

"Unknown fighter?" Holden picked up a piece of toast and took a bite.

"Allegedly, this fighter wore a featureless gold mask and a dark cloak. No weapon. No visible affiliation. He was matched against Gorge the Butcher, a veteran mercenary with forty-seven consecutive wins and a reputation for brutalizing opponents."

Renna leaned forward, eyes gleaming. "And the masked guy knocked him out with ONE PUNCH! Broke his spiked knuckles and everything! They’re calling him Asura!"

"Asura," Lyra repeated, shaking her head slowly. "How dramatic. Another lawless thug brutalizing people for money in an unregulated fighting pit. This is exactly the kind of criminal activity that undermines the academy’s mission to produce disciplined warriors."

"I think it sounds cool," Renna said. "I bet the masked guy is like eight feet tall! With muscles everywhere! And he probably has this mysterious backstory where he was raised by wolves or something!"

"The probability of a feral wolf-child developing Rank Two cultivation abilities is statistically negligible," Emric said. "More likely, he’s a disgraced former soldier or an escaped criminal hiding from legitimate authorities."

Holden sipped his tea. "Sounds like a bad neighborhood."

"It is a bad neighborhood," Lyra said firmly. "These underground arenas are dangerous. Fighters die in those cages regularly. The fact that this Asura person won one match doesn’t make him impressive. It makes him foolish for risking his life for gambling money."

"Good thing I stay inside and read books all night," Holden said.

Renna pointed at him with a fork. "You’re no fun. Where’s your sense of adventure?"

"I left it in the slums. Along with my desire to get punched by strangers for entertainment."

Lyra gave him a small smile. "At least someone has sense."

The conversation drifted to other topics. The aftermath of the arena disaster. Draven’s trial. Lyra’s recovery, which she described as "remarkably swift" without elaborating on why. Holden listened and contributed when appropriate, keeping his expression relaxed and his voice casual.

Nobody suspected a thing.

After morning classes, a messenger found Holden in the hallway.

"Instructor Vespera requests your presence in her office. Immediately."

The walk to Vespera’s office was familiar now. The same cold corridors. The same black door. The same sense of entering a predator’s territory.

He knocked twice and entered.

Vespera sat behind her desk with her fingers steepled. Her star-core was stable, her health restored, and her Rank 4 presence filled the room like an invisible weight. She looked healthier than Holden had ever seen her.

"Close the door."

He did.

"Sit."

He sat.

Vespera was quiet for a long moment. Her pale eyes studied him with that penetrating gaze that seemed to strip away every layer of pretense.

"The Valcrest family has made their move," she said finally. "Draven’s father pulled strings with the merchant guilds and the underground networks. They’ve hired a mercenary gang called the Iron Fangs."

Holden kept his expression neutral. "I’ve heard of them."

"Then you know they’re professionals. Not amateurs like the assassin you killed in the ruins. The Iron Fangs have thirty-two active members, all Rank 2 or higher. Their captain is a Rank 2, 8-Star veteran with over two hundred confirmed kills. They specialize in hunting targets who can’t fight back in the open."

She leaned forward slightly.

"They know they can’t touch you on academy grounds. My protection extends that far. But outside these walls, you’re fair game. They’ll be watching the Prime Zone. Tracking your movements. Waiting for you to step into a blind spot."

"What do you suggest?"

"Stay inside the warded estate after dark. No exceptions. The Iron Fangs can’t breach it without drawing attention from academy security. If you stay put, you’re safe."

Holden nodded slowly. "Understood."

"I’m serious, Voss. The Valcrest family is desperate and humiliated. They’ll spend whatever it takes to hurt you. Don’t give them the opportunity."

"I’ll stay safe," he said.

Vespera’s eyes narrowed slightly, searching his face for any hint of insincerity. She must have found what she was looking for, because she leaned back and waved her hand.

"Go. And don’t make me regret trusting you."

Holden stood and walked to the door.

As he reached the door, Vespera’s voice followed him.

"And Voss?"

He paused.

"If the Iron Fangs do find you outside the wards, don’t try to be clever. Run. Survive. Let me handle the political fallout after."

"Of course."

He stepped into the hallway and closed the door behind him.

The corridors were empty. The students were in afternoon classes. Holden walked slowly, his hands in his pockets, his expression calm.

But inside, he was smiling.

The Iron Fangs. Thirty-two members. All Rank 2 or higher. Crawling through the underworld looking for him. Patrolling the criminal districts. Checking the illegal arenas.

If they were hunting in the Pit’s territory, they might decide to enter the cages themselves. Mercenaries needed money. The Pit paid well for winners. And if a group of Iron Fangs signed up for the Rank 2 division...

They’d end up face to face with Asura.

He wouldn’t even have to hunt them down. They’d come to him.

Holden turned the corner and headed toward his next class.
