Chapter 49: The Abyssal Rift
The championship stage felt different under the arena lights.
Bigger and louder. The white granite gleamed like a star under the spotlights. Thousands of upperclassmen packed the stands. Noble families leaned over their VIP railings. Instructors lined the upper ring with watchful eyes.
Holden walked to the center of the stage.
Across from him, Lyra stepped up with her spear resting on her shoulder. Her expression was calm, focused, and faintly amused. She looked like she was about to enjoy herself.
"Ready?" she asked.
"Always."
"Try not to embarrass yourself."
"No promises."
The referee raised his hand. The crowd noise peaked. Every eye in the stadium locked onto the two fighters.
In the VIP front row, Maeve had her Ashen Bestiary open on her lap. She’d been monitoring the arena floor’s energy fluctuations all day, jotting down patterns in the margins of her notes.
She looked down at the stage edge.
Her pen stopped moving.
The faint ripple she’d been tracking since wasn’t faint anymore. It was a visible pulse, running through the floor. And it was accelerating. Every pulse was stronger than the last.
Her head snapped up.
"The underground array is overloading!" she shouted. "Get back! Something is wrong with the floor!"
But the crowd was too loud. Nobody heard her.
Under the stadium, in a cramped medical bay, Draven lay on a bed with his broken armor scattered around him. His chest was caved in where Holden’s palm had hit. Blood dripped from his mouth. His family guards stood over him with grim expressions.
"This isn’t over," Draven spat. He was choking on the blood in his throat, making his voice sound wet and gurgling, but the hatred in it was crystal clear. "He humiliated me. In front of everyone. Activate it. Now."
One of the guards hesitated. "Sir, the array beneath the stadium is unstable. If we trigger it now, during an active event, the results could be..."
"I SAID NOW!" Draven screamed. He grabbed the guard’s collar with a bloody hand. "Release the cages! Let the beasts handle what I couldn’t! Do it or I’ll have your entire family stripped of their positions!"
The guard looked at his partner. His partner looked at the floor.
He pulled a small black device from his belt and turned a dial all the way to maximum.
Click.
Deep beneath the arena, a dark array that had been secretly woven into the monster cage seals flared to life. It wasn’t designed to just open the cages. It was designed to overload the entire protection grid and rip every seal at once.
But the grid had already been destabilizing for hours.
The dark array hit the weakening protection seals.
Something went wrong.
The seals didn’t just break. They tore. The energy from the dark array combined with the destabilized protection grid and created a chain reaction that no one had predicted, because no one had been stupid enough to try this before.
The center of the arena stage split open.
A jagged line of absolute blackness tore the floor like reality itself was being ripped apart by invisible hands.
CRACK.
The sound wasn’t loud at first. It was deep. A sub-bass frequency that hit below normal hearing and rattled every bone in every person’s body. Then it got louder. And louder.
The black line widened.
A swirling vortex of dark energy spiraled out from the crack, expanding rapidly. Purple and black light churned inside it. The air around it turned cold.
An Abyssal Spatial Rift.
The shockwave of dark energy blasted outward in a ring.
BOOM.
The stage exploded. Chunks of stone the size of cars launched into the air. The referee was thrown backward like a ragdoll. The arena lights flickered, died, and restarted in an angry red emergency hue.
Holden grabbed Lyra and dove sideways. They hit the ground behind a chunk of broken stage just as a piece of granite the size of a door slammed into the spot where they’d been standing.
The rift hung in the center of the arena like a wound in the sky. Twenty meters wide and growing. Dark mist poured from its edges, spreading across the arena floor in thick, curling waves.
Then the screaming started.
Students were scrambling over each other, trying to flee. Instructors were on their feet, shouting commands. Vespera’s voice cut through the noise somewhere above, ordering immediate evacuation.
Holden looked up.
A glowing barrier was forming around the arena floor. Golden light, the same color as the stadium’s safety wards. But something was wrong. The barrier was moving inward, shrinking, locking down.
It wasn’t protecting the people inside.
It was trapping them.
The safety wards had glitched. The dark energy from the rift had corrupted them, reversing their function. Instead of keeping threats out, they were keeping everyone in.
Through the golden barrier, Holden could see Instructor Vespera slamming her palm against the shield. Her Rank 4 aura flared violently. The barrier didn’t even flicker.
Outside the shield, chaos. Inside the shield, something worse.
The rift pulsed.
Things started coming through.
First was a shape that moved low and fast on too many legs. Rank 2. Abyssal Crawler. Its chitinous plates were black and its mandibles clicked with a sound like bones snapping.
Then more and more started coming through.
A giant creature followed them, moving slowly and heavily behind them. Rank 3. An Abyssal Brute. It stood four meters tall with arms like tree trunks and a face that was mostly mouth.
More shapes poured from the rift. Dozens of them. Rank 2 and Rank 3 beasts, each one dripping with dark energy, each one looking for something to kill.
Students on the arena floor screamed and ran in every direction. Some froze completely. A boy near the rift didn’t move fast enough. A Crawler lunged and dragged him into the dark mist before anyone could react.
Holden was on his feet in an instant.
His brought out his Star-Forged sword.
He moved fast enough to reach the VIP player box before the mist did.
Maeve was standing at the edge of the box, her face pale but her eyes sharp. Emric was beside her, shield already on his arm. Renna had her bow out with an arrow knocked, though her hands were shaking.
Lyra appeared at his side with her spear ready, a thin line of blood running down her forehead from a cut she didn’t seem to notice.
Holden stepped in front of all of them.
"Weapons out," he said. His voice was flat. The relaxed tournament fighter from thirty seconds ago was gone. In his place was something harder. "Stay behind my sword."
Maeve grabbed the back of his jacket.
"Holden, the rift is expanding. If it keeps growing at this rate, it’ll swallow the entire arena floor within minutes."
"How many beasts?"
"I count at least thirty visible. Probably more in the mist."
Emric adjusted his shield. "The barrier is impenetrable from both sides. We cannot retreat outward, and external reinforcement cannot reach us. We are sealed in a confined space with an unknown number of hostile entities ranked between two and three."
Renna’s voice cracked slightly. "So we’re trapped in a box with monsters and no way out. That’s great. That’s just perfect."
Holden’s eyes swept the arena. The mist was spreading fast. More beasts were pouring through the rift every second. The other freshmen were scattered and panicking, easy targets.
He had maybe a minute before the mist reached the player box.
"Lyra," he said. "Can you see a path to the maintenance tunnels under the bleachers?"
She followed his gaze. "Southwest corner. There’s a service door behind the collapsed section of seating. It might be clear."
"Then we move. Now."
