Chapter 43: Thunder-Ape Core

Holden woke up feeling like his body had been rebuilt overnight.

He lay in bed for a moment, just breathing. He could feel the change in his body; his muscles felt denser and more powerful, and his joints felt solid. Even the weight of the blanket on his chest felt lighter than usual, as if the gravity in the room had decreased while he was asleep.

He pulled up his status panel.

┌──────[ Profile ]──────┐

│ [Name]: Holden Voss

│ [Fighter Rank]: Rank 1 (9-Star)

│ [KP Balance]: 3,090

│ [Multiplier]: 1,000x

│ [KP Booster]: 2x Active

└─────────────────────────┘

Nine stars. The absolute peak of Rank 1. No freshman in the academy had ever reached this level. As far as Holden knew, no freshman in the last decade had even come close.

So the logical next question was obvious.

"What do I need to break into Rank 2?"

The response came fast.

[Ding!]

[Query received: Path to Rank 2.]

[Analyzing current biological state...]

The panel flickered. The blue text vanished. In its place, a harsh red warning filled his vision.

[WARNING: ENERGY FOUNDATION UNSTABLE.]

[Rapid sequential breakthroughs have placed extreme strain on your meridians. Current energy channels are 72% over-saturated. Your 9-Star foundation is not yet solidified.]

[ATTEMPTING RANK 2 BREAKTHROUGH IN CURRENT STATE WILL CAUSE YOUR MERIDIAN CHANNELS TO FAIL COMPLETELY. ESTIMATED OUTCOME: DEATH.]

[PRESCRIBED SOLUTION: Engage in multiple high-intensity combat encounters. You need the physical strain of a fight to force the loose energy to settle permanently into your network. You need to survive 5 to 8 high-level battles before you can safely advance.]

[Do not ignore this warning.]

The red text lingered for a moment before fading back to blue.

"So I need to get into fights. A lot of fights. Against people strong enough to actually hit me."

He sat up and rubbed his face.

"That’s inconvenient. I was hoping to avoid drawing attention."

He got dressed, ate a quick breakfast, and headed to the academy.

The main hallway was busier than usual. Students weren’t just walking. They were moving in groups, pointing at the large holographic screens mounted along the walls. The screens normally showed academy news, class schedules, and event reminders.

Today, every single screen displayed the same image.

A golden tournament bracket.

Holden slowed down as he approached his team’s usual meeting spot near the east corridor. Lyra was already there, leaning against the wall and watching the screen with a sharp, focused expression.

Emric stood beside her with his notebook out, already scribbling.

Renna was bouncing on her heels.

"Oh, there he is! Holden! Holdenen! Look at the screens! Tell me you see the screens!"

"I see the screens."

"Then you know! You know what this means!"

Lyra spoke before Renna could spiral further.

"The Annual Freshman Combat Tournament," she said, her voice carrying that confident, formal clarity she always brought to important information. "It’s a tradition. Every year, the academy hosts a single-elimination bracket for all first-year students. One-on-one arena battles."

"It serves two purposes," Emric added, not looking up from his notebook. "First, it creates an official ranking hierarchy for the freshman class. Your placement in this tournament determines your resource allocation, training priority, and social standing for the remainder of the year. Second, it allows the instructors to identify students who require additional attention, either for advancement or remedial training."

"In other words," Renna said, grabbing Holden’s arm, "it’s a big fighting festival with everyone watching and we’re all in it whether we like it or not!"

"When does it start?" Holden asked.

"Next week," Lyra said. "The brackets are randomized. Single elimination. You lose once, you’re out. The top ten get placed in the elite track for the rest of the semester."

Holden looked at the screen. The bracket was massive, filled with hundreds of names arranged in a tree structure leading down to a single champion slot at the bottom.

He found his name near the top of Block A.

He found Draven’s name on the opposite side, buried in Block B.

"Interesting," he murmured.

Someone handed him a paper brochure as he walked to class. He shoved it in his pocket without reading it.

After classes ended, he made the walk home.

The Aegis Ward pulsed and let him in. The house was warm and quiet. Maeve was at the kitchen table, surrounded by open books and loose pages of notes. The Ashen Bestiary Journal was in front of her. She treated it like a holy book.

She looked up when he came in.

"You’re late."

"Stayed after to look at something. Here."

He pulled the tournament brochure out of his pocket and dropped it on the table in front of her.

Maeve picked it up and flipped it open. Her eyes scanned the pages with that quick, hungry speed she got when she was processing new information.

"Freshman Combat Tournament," she read aloud. "Single elimination. Arena format. Prizes awarded to top four finishers."

She flipped to the prize page.

Then she stopped.

Her eyes went wide.

"Holden."

"Yeah?"

She rotated the brochure and tapped the first line of the prize list with her fingernail.

"First Place prize. Rank 2 Thunder-Ape Core. Preserved in aether suspension."

She reached for the Bestiary Journal without looking, her hand finding it by muscle memory. She flipped to a page near the middle, scanned it, then looked back at the brochure.

Then she smiled.

"Holden, listen to me. The Thunder-Ape is a Rank 2 beast, but its core is special. Most Rank 2 cores are chaotic and unstable. Raw power with no structure. But Thunder-Apes naturally organize their aether into lightning-patterned channels inside the core. It’s self-structuring energy."

She tapped the journal.

"According to this book, a preserved Thunder-Ape Core is one of the very few objects that can safely bridge the gap from Rank 1 to Rank 2. You absorb it, and the structured lightning channels act as a guide for your own meridians. They basically teach your energy pathways how to organize themselves for the Rank 2 transition."

She looked up at him, her eyes bright and sharp.

"If your body is ready for it, this core eliminates almost all the risk of a breakthrough failure. It’s exactly what you need."

Holden leaned back in his chair.

He let that sink in for a moment.

A tournament. High-intensity combat against the strongest freshmen in the academy. Exactly what the System demanded to stabilize his 9-Star foundation. And at the end of it, a prize that solved his Rank 2 problem.

It was almost too perfect.

"You know what this means, right?" Maeve said.

"It means I don’t have to sneak out into the woods and hunt dangerous beasts in the middle of the night."

"It means your path is laid out. Fight to stabilize. Win to advance. All of it, right there in one neat package."

Holden looked at the brochure. Then at the Bestiary Journal. Then at his sister, who was practically vibrating with the thrill of having her research pay off.

He grinned.

"Sounds a lot easier than doing more homework."

Maeve laughed.

"I mean it! This tournament is the perfect solution to your problems. You get the combat experience you need to stabilize your power, you get to win the core, and you get to do it all legally, in front of everyone, with official approval."

"I know. I’m just messing with you."

She swatted his arm.

"Don’t mess with me when I’m being brilliant."

"Wouldn’t dream of it."

He picked up the brochure and studied the bracket one more time. Block A. His path to the top was a straight line of opponents, each one a test, each one a chance to turn his unstable foundation into something solid.

And somewhere on the other side of the bracket, Draven was doing the same math.

Holden folded the brochure and put it inside his jacket.

"Next week is going to be fun."
