Chapter 63: Grey Fog [2]
I stretched my senses as far as I could, to detect anything that tried to sneak up on me, and so that I could see inside the fog.
The fog became thicker as I walked deeper into it. No matter where I looked, there was no sign of any living thing.
The thing about the fog was that it was so thick it could distort your sense of direction. That’s why it wasn’t advisable to panic, but to keep calm instead.
In addition, I had to be as silent as possible to not attract any unwanted attention, because there were creatures lurking out there, waiting for prey.
But I was no easy prey. As long as a group of Greater-ranked monsters didn’t gang up on me, I’d be good.
’It will be funny if something comes from the fog and drags you by the leg.’ Ezio laughed in my head.
’Yeah, yeah, shut up.’
That was something that only happened in horror movies—
At that moment, something from below wrapped around my right leg, stopping me from walking.
Fuck. Ezio and his mouth!
Danger filled my senses and, in reaction, a blade made of darkness formed in my right hand and I slashed at whatever was wrapped around my leg. My blade cut it and a pained shriek came from below.
I jumped back from where I stood, keeping in mind where the northeast was, so I didn’t get lost.
I lifted my right leg and looked at the thing that had been wrapped around it — it was some kind of green tentacle that looked rough and was now leaking green blood from the stump where I had cut it.
Gross. Luckily it didn’t smell like the praying mantises, but it was still gross.
I had been so focused on sensing whatever was around me that I forgot to be wary of what was underground as well.
I spread my senses underground and found a mana signature moving beneath me. I moved to the side and a tentacle thrust out of the ground and missed me.
My blade came down and cut the tentacle in half, earning another pained shriek from the monster.
I pressed my feet on the ground and a pillar of darkness rose below me, lifting me up two meters high.
’You just had to open your mouth, didn’t you, Ezio?’
’What? It’s not like you didn’t expect an attack this soon, after all, this is the territory of these things.’
Even though I hated to admit it, he was right. These creatures were called Underground Lurkers. They were creatures that lived underground and used their tentacles to hunt prey. Fun fact, they were blind, so they depended on vibrations to locate their prey, and once they located their prey, they pulled them down towards their main bodies and ate them. So me walking above the ground produced vibrations that pinpointed my location.
That’s why I raised myself above the ground, making it blind again.
Now, how do I kill this creature?
I had to find its main body, of course, which was deep underground. That would be a bit difficult because the monster was at least 2 or 3 meters underground, and I had to either perform an attack strong enough to dig into the earth and kill it, or bring the monster close enough to the surface so I could deal the finishing blow.
I crouched on top of the pillar and thought rapidly of a solution.
It didn’t take long for me to choose, so I went with the first option — performing an attack that would kill the creature underground, because I didn’t have time to drag it out of the earth.
I stretched my senses again to confirm which direction and how deep the monster was. After confirming, I created another pillar in front of me, closer to the monster’s location, and jumped onto it. I could feel the Underground Lurker’s tentacles wrapping around the new pillar.
A two-meter-long thin spear formed in my palm with its head touching the ground — the area where the monster was. I pressed the butt of the spear with my palm and the head sank into the earth, and as expected, the monster’s tentacles came out of the ground and wrapped around the spear, trying to break it.
Sharp spikes released from the shaft of the spear and pierced the wrapped tentacles, making the creature shriek in pain and let go of the spear.
Once the spear was deep enough, I let go of it and raised both hands up — darkness energy gathered in my hands and a huge hammer took shape.
I grabbed the hammer with both hands, strengthened my arms with mana, and slammed the hammer against the butt of the spear with as much strength as I could.
The spear sank down into the earth with speed, causing the ground to shake.
The spear came to a stop as if it had come into contact with something, and then a loud shrieking scream came from below and stopped not long after.

The spear had successfully impaled the monster.
The good thing was that Underground Lurkers were like sloths, they moved really slowly and rarely moved from their hunting spots, so it was easier to kill them — if they did move, it would’ve been a different story.
’Hmm, that was a good idea, you keep surprising me.’ Ezio praised.
’I am a box full of surprises.’ I smirked.
It was a good idea, but it would be time-wasting trying to kill them one by one, so instead I decided to run until I was out of their territory.
So, screw trying to be silent.
I let all the constructs crumble and I fell down, landing on the ground in a crouch. I turned to my left, which was northeast, and ran towards it.
As I ran, tentacles rose from the earth trying to grab me, but unfortunately for them, I moved like a cat and evaded every single one of them, cutting those I couldn’t dodge.
Throughout the run, I sensed that some of the monsters were about a meter away from me, which was close, so I spread my mana on the ground and created spikes under my feet that pierced the ground and killed them.
