Chapter 59: Climbing up [1]
I dashed through the cave following the same path I did earlier in the morning. I still had the armor on, just in case I would encounter the other army of skeletons.
I had to be fast and leave before the other skeletons realized there was something wrong.
I could have stayed the night on the other side of the bridge and left the next day but that would be foolish because by that time the other 100 skeletons would swarm here and stop me from leaving. So I couldn’t wait.
I dashed past the places where I had killed the previous skeletons — their ashes still on the floor.
Soon, I entered the cave with stone pillars and crystal walls. From afar I saw the other entrance to another tunnel. I crossed the cave with speed, leaving a black streak behind me.
I entered the tunnel and kept running.
"Ezio, how far are the other skeletons?" I asked.
’About 400 meters from you, and it seems like yesterday they moved a bit far from here.’ Ezio said in my head calmly.
I kept running straight because no left or right turns had appeared yet, which was expected since the tunnel would continue straight for about 200 meters and only then would I see other paths.
My [Darkness Sense] was active, just in case someone lunged at me from the dark. But it wouldn’t really be necessary because I had Ezio with me to alert me.
In addition to that, I felt my body becoming stronger alongside my senses because of the darkness.
My [Darkness Sense], which was spread about 50 meters, picked up on something — it drew 6 paths in my head before I could even see them.
[Darkness Sense] didn’t just detect or sense things — it could also create a living picture of something I couldn’t see or recognize by sight in my head. So if I were perhaps blind or had no other way of seeing with my eyes, [Darkness Sense] would work as my new eyes.
Therefore, even if an opponent blinded me with some type of magical ability, I’d still have a way to fight. Albeit, I still had yet to train it in order for it to be useful in battle.
I came to an abrupt stop and looked at the 6 paths in front of me — two turns on my left and right and two diagonal turns in front of me.
I quickly recalled the Chapter I had written about this mountain and found which turn I was supposed to take.
I’m supposed to take a right diagonal turn.
"Ezio, tell me what you sense from these different tunnels."
’The two on your left take you to the west side of the mountain. The two on the right keep going straight and eventually go down to God-knows-where. And the two in front of you — they both lead you north up the mountain, but the difference is that the left diagonal leads you straight to the hundred-strong army of skeletons, while the right diagonal does too, but it has fewer skeletons; however, there’s a connection between the two further deep.’ Ezio said slowly.
So it was still the same as I had written in the book. I was glad it hadn’t changed. The army of skeletons was split into three groups — the one I had just killed, which hung around the bridge, and the other two, which roamed these two tunnels.
Since the tunnel on the left diagonal had most of the skeletons, it was smart to take the right one.
"Right diagonal it is." I said before I dashed in that direction.
I moved as fast and silently as possible because if I made a mistake and warned the other group, they could just come to the right tunnel through the path that connects both tunnels and swarm me.
It wouldn’t be pleasant at all.
As I continued dashing, my senses detected two monsters — two skeleton axemen at Common rank and Low class.
I didn’t stop but instead increased my speed.
My katana flashed as my figure blurred past them — their bodies were cut in half afterwards.

I never stopped and kept running.
The tunnel kept turning left and right and I followed it without stopping.
As I took another turn, an axe came swinging at me from my right. I wasn’t surprised because I had already sensed it long ago.
I ducked, and then punched my gloved hand through the skeleton’s chest, crushing the core.

I didn’t wait for the monster to turn to ash and kept moving forward.
Fortunately, I passed the path that connected both tunnels, avoiding the chance of getting swarmed.
I no longer encountered more skeletons, which was good. The tunnel stopped going forward and instead rose up the mountain.
Crouching, I launched myself up, stepped on the wall in front of me and then jumped up and backwards, stepping on the wall above me. I repeated the same moves continuously until I reached the top of the tunnel, which no longer went up but continued forward.
I jumped forward and ran for hours until I was way too far from the skeletons. I only came to a stop to rest and eat.
A day passed, and yet there was no sign of light. I was so used to the darkness by now that it felt like this was the environment I had been living in from the start.
However, I was finally able to see light...I had reached the end of the tunnel.
The first thing I heard was the sound of running water rushing through the rocks, and the second thing was the fresh breeze of air.
I stopped running and came out of the cave. I didn’t need to shield my eyes since they automatically adjusted to the light change, so it didn’t feel like I was hit with a flashlight.
I stepped out of the cave and stopped at the edge. Below me, a river ran through the valley, fast and noisy. On the other side, the mountain wall rose straight up, rough and covered in patches of grey rock.
Above, a narrow crack ran along the length of the mountain, and sunlight poured through it in a single bright strip. It hit the water downstream, making that part of the river gleam. The rest of the gorge stayed in shadow.
I stood there for a moment, looking across. There was no easy way down, and no bridge in sight.
’What’s next?’
"We climb up."
