Building Zoids in a World of Titans

Vol 2: Chapter 23

The Liger Zero's optics glowed steady amber in the pre-dawn dark, its head tilted toward the eastern ridge where tomorrow's hunt would begin. Alex ran his palm along the cockpit's edge, feeling the familiar thrum of anticipation. Whatever was up there, the Liger recognized it.

Ziya's boots crunched on gravel behind him. "You're up early."

"Couldn't sleep." He didn't turn. "The Liger's been twitchy since last night."

Rhian appeared a moment later, her boots scuffing against the Mule's deck. "Did it dream about the big scary thing that wants to eat us?"

"Something like that." Alex finally faced them. "We keep moving at first light. Same plan."

Ziya nodded, but Rhian grabbed his arm. "Alex. What if it's something we can't handle? What if we have to run?"

He crouched to her level. "Then we run." Simple enough. True enough.

The canyon opened up like a wound in the earth.

Steep walls rose fifty meters on either side, striped with layers of red rock and something darker—volcanic glass that caught the morning light like broken mirrors. The riverbed stretched between them, cracked and dusty, with mineral-rich soil that shimmered copper and gold where the last floodwaters had deposited their treasures. Ash coated everything in a fine gray powder that made the air taste metallic.

Alex guided the Liger Zero along the ridge line, keeping to higher ground where they could see. Ziya rode in the Mule's cabin, binoculars scanning the canyon floor. Rhian perched on the Arosaurer's shoulder joint, her boots hooked into the access panel.

"This place feels... wrong," Ziya said over the comm. "Like something ate the life out of it."

"Told you we'd find better prey." The Liger's servos whined with barely contained excitement.

Alex's eye twitched. "It's not a Titan. Not yet."

"Then what's got your machine so worked up?"

His HUD pinged. Movement. Large shapes moving through the ash-choked riverbed below.

"Hold on." He keyed the zoom. "Ziya, get a visual on that."

The herd emerged from behind a collapsed rockfall, stepping carefully through what used to be a river. They stood three meters tall at the shoulder, built like bulldozers with armored hides the color of sun-baked clay. Massive tusks curved from their lower jaws, yellowed and scarred from years of digging. Their backs were low-slung, almost sagging, with thick plates that looked like they'd grown from the bone itself.

"What are they?" Rhian whispered.

"Tuskers." Alex cross-referenced the database while the creatures rooted through the ash. "D-Rank, mostly. Semi-aquatic excavators. They follow water sources, dig out burrows in riverbanks."

"They're huge."

"They're desperate." Alex watched one lift its head, tusks dripping with gray mud. "River dried up, they're stuck in this canyon looking for somewhere to dig. Usually they're not hostile unless you mess with their young or their territory."

Rhian let out a breath that was almost a laugh. "So we don't mess with their mud holes and we're fine?"

"That's the theory." Alex's fingers tightened on the controls. "But desperate animals make stupid choices."

The lead Tusker bellowed, a sound that echoed off canyon walls like thunder. The rest of the herd responded, and Alex felt the Liger's whole frame vibrate with the urge to charge.

"Easy," he muttered. "We're not here to hunt."

Alex, Ziya, and Rhian were about to move on and leave the Tuskers behind when the ground trembled beneath them—a deep, rolling vibration that made the stones beneath their feet shift.

Alex's teeth clacked together as the Liger Zero stumbled. The cockpit alarms screamed—seismic spikes off the charts. Ziya's voice crackled through the comm, sharp with sudden fear.

"What the hell was that?"

Rhian gripped the Arosaurer's controls, her knuckles white. "Alex, something's wrong—"

A sound split the morning air, deep and resonant enough to make their teeth ache. Not a roar, not a scream—something older. Something that made the very stones tremble.

"RRRROOOOAAAA—RRRRRRRROOOOOAAAA—!"

The Liger Zero's optics flickered amber to red. Alex's hands tightened on the controls as the earth cracked open fifty meters from their position, dust and stone cascading into the newly-formed fissure.

The ground shuddered again, harder this time. Alex's teeth clacked against his teeth as the Liger Zero staggered. That wasn't natural seismic activity.

"RRRRRRROOOOO—RRRRRRRROOOOO—!"

The Liger's roar vibrated through the cockpit, raw with something Alex had never heard before. Not aggression. Recognition.

"The hell is that sound?" Ziya's voice crackled through the comm, sharp with alarm.

Alex's HUD flickered. Too many heat signatures now. Dozens of them. The Tusker herd had broken into a stampede.

"RRRROOO—RRRROOO—RRRROOO—!"

They were coming straight for the ridge. Alex watched through his canopy as the massive excavators abandoned their digging, tusks gleaming in the dawn light, charging toward them with desperate speed.

"Ziya—Rhian—get out of there!" Alex slammed his fist against the control panel. "Run! Don't stop!"

"RROOOO—RRRRROOOO—!"

The Liger Zero took an involuntary step forward, its servos whining. Alex grabbed the controls, forcing it back.

"I know you want to fight, but we can't fight them all!"

The Liger Zero's servos whined as Alex angled away from the ridge, its claws scraping stone as they pivoted. Rhian's Arosaurer thundered behind, autocannon ports flaring.

"RROOO—RRROOO—!"

The Liger's roar cut off as Alex slammed the controls hard left, sending them skidding down a rocky slope. Loose scree exploded underfoot.

"RRRROOO—RRRROOO—!"

The Arosaurer kept pace, surprisingly agile despite its bulk. Alex could hear Ziya shouting over the comm, the Iron Mule's engines screaming as she put distance between them and the stampede.

They burst through a thicket of scrub pine. Alex's HUD painted a clear path west—open ground sloping down to the dried riverbed. The Liger Zero's ion boosters ignited with a sharp WHINE, carrying them forward in long, bounding strides that ate up the distance.

While driving, Iron Mule's engine suddenly coughed smoke as Ziya fought the controls, but the wheels spun uselessly in the loose scree.

"Alex—" Her voice crackled through the comm, sharp with panic. "Something's jammed in the transmission!"

The lead Tusker bellowed again, closer now. Alex's HUD showed five more closing from the flank.

"Ziya, get out!" He pivoted the Liger Zero, ion boosters whining as he angled toward the Mule. Rhian's Arosaurer thundered behind him, autocannon ports flaring.

"RROOOO—RRRROOOO—!"

They fired—Alex's laser fangs punching through one Tusker's shoulder, Rhian's autocannon rounds sparking off another's armored plates. But the herd kept coming, driven by desperation, not pain.

"Alex, they're not stopping!" Rhian's voice carried that particular edge of panic she got when she realized she was in over her head.

"Then we make them."

Rhian's Arosaurer skidded to a halt fifty meters ahead of the Mule. Alex watched her scan the terrain—scrub pine, dry brush, anything that might burn.

"What's the plan?" he asked.

"Distraction!" She grabbed a bundle of resin-soaked branches from a fallen tree, hurling them with the Arosaurer's manipulator claws. "If we can't hurt them, maybe we can scare them!"

Alex's optics widened. "Rhian, that's—"

Too late. She'd already dumped the branches in a thick line between the Tuskers and the Mule. The Arosaurer's flamethrower hissed to life, spitting orange fire across the dry vegetation.

WHOOOOOSH

The flames caught fast, racing along the fuel-soaked brush. The lead Tusker reared back with a panicked "SKREEE—SKREEE—!" The others followed suit, splitting apart as the fire spread.

Alex didn't hesitate. He charged the Liger Zero forward, using the Mane Blast to drive the stragglers away from the Mule. The effect was immediate—the Tuskers wheeled, tusks flashing, putting distance between themselves and the spreading blaze.

"Ziya!" Rhian's voice held triumph now. "You can move!"

"The transmission's clear!" Ziya's relief flooded through the comm. "Alex, we did it!"

The last Tusker vanished over the ridge, its bellows fading into the distance. Alex killed the Liger's boosters, watching the smoke curl upward from the burned scrub.

Rhian let out a breath that was half-laugh, half-sob. "I can't believe that worked."

"It worked because you saw what I missed." Alex rubbed his eyes, exhaustion hitting him like a physical weight. "Good thinking, Rhian."

The Liger Zero nudged forward, its massive frame settling with satisfied hum.

"RRRROO—RRRROO—!"
