Building Zoids in a World of Titans

Chapter 50

Two months passed.

The workshop changed. New fabrication bays where empty space used to be. Borin's craftsmen moved with the confidence of people who'd learned to build machines that breathe. Four Godos stood finished along the far wall, awaiting guild transfer. Done.

Team Celestia clustered near them. Anya's hand rested on her machine's foot, her fingers tracing the silver plating one last time. She didn't say anything. Fia stood beside her, arms crossed, jaw tight. Lyra and Seraphine flanked them, both quiet in a way that meant something.

They'd been piloting these machines for two months. Letting go looked different on each of them.

Rhian moved between the four women, her small hands finding theirs, her voice low and steady. She said the things Alex couldn't — that the machines would be cared for, that the pilots would always be their first operators, that this wasn't goodbye. Not really.

Alex stood to the side with Borin and Ziya. He watched Rhian work the room and felt something tighten in his chest. She'd grown into something he didn't have a name for. Not a little girl anymore. Not just a friend. Something else.

"She's good at that," Ziya said quietly.

"Yeah," Alex said.

Borin clapped his shoulder. "You built the machines. She handles the people. Between the two of you, this city might actually survive."

The workshop doors opened. Elara Vance entered with her secretary and two guards, her boots striking the floor with the precision of someone who measured every step. She surveyed the Godos, her expression unreadable, then turned to Alex.

"Warden Alex. The machines are impressive. Veridia thanks you."

Alex shifted his weight. "You should thank Borin and his people. They did most of the work."

Elara's mouth pulled upward. A rehearsed smile. "Modesty doesn't suit you. I've heard the Lanstag and Liger Zero are complete as well." She paused, letting the silence do its work. "I'd like to observe the testing."

Of course she would.

Alex glanced at Ziya, who gave him the smallest nod. Then at Borin, who shrugged as if to say, you knew this was coming.

"Fine."

Elara's smile widened. Not warm. Satisfied.

Ziya's fingers drummed against her forearm. Borin rocked on his heels, his gaze fixed on the sealed platform door. Rhian materialized at Alex's side, close enough that her shoulder brushed his arm.

"You're really showing them?" she whispered.

"Already committed," Alex said.

Rhian grinned. "Good."

Alex moved to the console. His fingers found the familiar sequence, and the workshop's ambient noise dropped to a hush. A loud whir built from below. The large door shuddered, then split apart, and the platform rose into the light.

The Liger Zero stood on the lift, its deep royal blue frame catching the overhead lamps. Green accents traced the joints and vents like veins of living current. The white-and-silver armor cowling gave it a predatory sharpness, and the golden-yellow fangs gleamed behind the sealed cockpit.

This Liger Zero wasn't the standard black frame. Alex thought the color scheme suited it perfectly, the deep royal blue a natural match for a machine built to channel blue lightning. He'd drawn inspiration from the Blue Souga variant, the one from the Zoids Generation stories he'd obsessed over as a kid on Earth. Seeing it standing here, real and humming with contained energy, the connection between that old plastic model and this eighty-five-ton predator was almost too neat.

The room went silent.

Alex's System overlay flickered to life, visible only to him.

  • AZ 108mm High-Density Beam Gun (tail-mounted)

  • Down Thrust Stabilizers & Ion Boosters

4. UNIQUE ABILITY

  • Weakness Scan (passive) — identifies structural and energetic vulnerabilities in opponents

  • Mane Blast (active) — focused bio-electric shockwave projected from mane vents

5. COMBAT ANALYSIS

  • The Agile Hunter. At 335 km/h, the Liger Zero is a ghost on the battlefield. Relies on incredible agility to dodge incoming fire before closing for a lethal, electrically charged strike. Wild-Type Core provides genuine battle instincts, often moving faster than the pilot can react. Light armor prioritizing speed leaves it vulnerable to sustained heavy artillery. If the boosters go down, the advantage goes with them.

Alex dismissed the overlay and looked at the room.

Ziya's hand covered her mouth. Her eyes were wide, reflecting the blue plating. Borin had stopped rocking. He stared at the Liger Zero the way a man stares at something he knows will outlast him.

Rhian's fingers gripped the workbench edge. Her lips parted, but no sound came out.

Lyra had frozen mid-notation, her stylus hovering above her data slate. Fia's arms had uncrossed. Both of her hands hung at her sides, and for once, she had nothing to say.

Anya stood very still. Her eyes moved across the Liger Zero's lines with the precision of someone cataloging every joint, every plate, every potential point of failure. Then she looked at Alex, and something shifted in her expression. Not surprise. Recognition.

Elara's guards had shifted their stances. One of them rested his hand on his sidearm. A reflex. The machine hadn't moved, and he was already reaching for a weapon.

Elara herself stepped forward, her boots clicking against the floor. She circled the platform slowly, her gaze tracing the Liger Zero's frame from nose to tail.

"Beautiful," she said quietly. Then, louder, to Alex: "And fast, I assume."

"Three hundred and thirty-five kilometers per hour," Alex said. "In a straight line. It corners better than the Arosaurer."

Fia found her voice. "It looks like it wants to eat something."

"It does," Alex said. "That's the point."

Rhian tugged his sleeve. "Can I sit in it?"

"No," Alex said.

"Why not?"

"Because you're nine."

Rhian's face fell. Then she brightened. "What about when I'm ten?"

Ziya laughed. The sound broke the tension, and the room exhaled. Borin shook his head, muttering something about children and death machines. Lyra returned to her slate, scribbling furiously. Seraphine moved closer to the Liger Zero, her hand hovering near its foreleg without touching, as if feeling the heat of something alive.

Elara turned back to Alex. Her eyes were sharp. Calculating.

"This one," she said, "is not for the guild."

"No," Alex said. "It's not."

Something passed between them. An understanding, maybe. Or a line drawn.

Elara nodded once. "Then let's see what it can do."

Alex climbed the access ladder and settled into the Liger Zero's cockpit. The interior wrapped around him — snug, purposeful, every control within reach. He sealed the canopy and the world outside became a panoramic display, the workshop rendered in crisp detail across the interior walls.

Ziya's voice came through the comms. "Core temperature nominal. Energy conduits showing green across the board. Boosters are charged and standing by."

Borin's rumble followed. "Frame integrity's solid. Hydraulics are smooth. She's ready, Alex."

Alex's hands found the controls. The same responsive sticks and pedals he'd designed, styled like reins. He took a breath.

"Liger Zero. Startup sequence initiated."

The cockpit hummed. Deepened. The panoramic display flickered as the Liger Zero's optic sensors came online, painting the workshop in the Zoid's own visual spectrum. Alex felt the machine's weight shift as the core engaged — not the steady thrum of the Arosaurer, but something faster. More alert.

The Liger Zero's head lifted. Its golden fangs caught the light.

Then it moved.

Not the smooth, controlled activation Alex had programmed. The Liger Zero surged forward, its forelegs striking the platform edge. The entire workshop shook. Alex was thrown against the harness as the Zoid twisted, its tail sweeping across the floor in a wide arc.

What—

The Liger Zero roared. Not the mechanical bark of the Arosaurer. This was organic. Furious. A sound that came from somewhere deeper than speakers.

"RROOOO-AAARRR-GHRRR!"

The guards drew their weapons and shoved Elara behind them. Ziya grabbed Rhian's arm and pulled her toward the wall. Borin shouted at his craftsmen to get back, his booming voice cutting through the chaos.

Anya stepped forward, her hand raised. "Alex! What's happening?"

"The Liger—" Alex fought the controls, his fingers dancing across the shutdown commands. "It's trying to take over. The core's fighting me."

Fia's voice crackled through. "Can you stop it?"

The Liger Zero lunged sideways, its claws gouging trenches in the workshop floor. Its mane vents flickered with arcs of blue light. The panoramic display showed the room scattering — Borin shielding his people, Seraphine pulling Lyra behind a fabrication bench, Anya and Fia bracing as if they might physically intervene.

"SZRIIING-CLACK!"

The Liger Zero's jaws snapped at empty air, its bio-electric charge building. Alex could feel it through the controls — a will pressing against his own, testing every safety barrier he'd built. The Stormclaw Liger's soul was alive in this machine, and it was angry.

"Alex!" Rhian's voice, small and terrified, cut through everything. "Get out of there!"

Borin's command boomed. "Shut it down, boy! Shut it down now!"

Alex's hands moved. He bypassed the standard shutdown and triggered the emergency protocol — a direct core interrupt that would kill every system at once. The Liger Zero resisted. For one terrible moment, the Zoid's will pushed back, its claws digging into the floor, its mane blazing.

"VUMMM-vummm—"

The sound died. The blue light faded. The Liger Zero's legs buckled, and the eighty-five-ton machine crashed to the workshop floor with a final, shuddering impact.

Silence.

Alex sat in the dark cockpit, his hands trembling on the controls, his heart hammering against his ribs.

The Stormclaw Liger was still in there. And it was far stronger than he'd imagined.
