Building Zoids in a World of Titans

Chapter 26

The Liger's eyes caught the light from its own mane, two pale discs that tracked the Arosaurer's every micro-movement.

"SKREEE—"

The Liger lunged. Thirty meters gone in two strides, its claws tearing furrows through the guild district's polished stone. Alex squeezed both triggers. The autocannons barked, stitching a line of sparks across the beast's flank. The rounds bounced off the galvanic hide like pebbles off plate armor.

"No penetration," Alex muttered.

He threw the joystick hard left. The Arosaurer pivoted, its damaged leg holding as it swung behind a ruined storefront. The Liger's follow-up strike hit the wall instead. Stone exploded inward. Alex fired the beam projector through the dust. White light caught the beast's shoulder. Scorched plating curled black. The Liger flinched.

It didn't slow.

It flowed around the rubble like water, its tail whipping low. Alex raised the Arosaurer's left arm. The tail slammed into the forearm housing. The cockpit shuddered. A yellow warning blinked across the HUD — actuator strain, left forearm, minor.

"Minor," Alex repeated through his teeth. "Sure."

Lyra's voice crackled through the comms, strained but steady.

"Alex, its hide diffuses kinetic energy. You need sustained beam contact or a joint strike."

"I noticed."

The Liger circled, its mane throwing arcs of blue light against the broken stone. It wasn't charging. It was measuring.

Alex's thumb hovered over the beam projector trigger. One shot left before the core drain forced a recharge cycle. He needed it to count.

The Liger's head lowered. Its hindquarters coiled.

"Here it comes," Alex whispered.

The beast exploded forward. Alex held his ground for one heartbeat, then sidestepped, firing the autocannons into the Liger's face as it passed. The rounds snapped its head sideways. Alex swung the Arosaurer's tail around. The kinetic tip cracked against the Liger's hind leg. The beast stumbled, recovered, and spun to face him again.

Its mane blazed brighter. The air tasted like ozone.

Alex's HUD flickered. The electromagnetic charge was building again.

"Not that," he said. "Anything but that."

He planted the Arosaurer's feet and raised the beam projector, tracking the Liger's chest. The beast crouched. Alex fired.

The beam punched into the Liger's sternum. The hide resisted for one second, then split. The Liger roared, a sound that shook dust from the surrounding walls, and staggered back three steps.

Alex exhaled.

Then the Liger straightened. The wound smoked. Its eyes never left the cockpit.

It took one step forward.

Alex's hand tightened on the joystick.

"Alright," he said quietly. "Round two."

The Liger closed the distance before Alex could reposition. It feinted left, then drove right, its shoulder catching the Arosaurer's chest plate. The impact sent the Zoid skidding backward, its feet carving trenches through the street. Alex braced against the restraints, his teeth rattling as the HUD flashed red across half its display.

Chest armor integrity at sixty-two percent. The Liger hadn't even used its claws.

It pressed forward, snapping at the Arosaurer's neck joint. Alex threw up the right arm. Electron Claws sparked against Vita-Alloy fangs. The force behind the bite drove the Arosaurer's arm down, the servos whining in protest. Alex fired the flamethrowers point-blank. The Liger recoiled from the heat, shaking its head, and Alex swung the smash-up tail in a wide arc.

The kinetic tip connected with the Liger's ribs. The beast slid sideways, its claws scraping stone, and let out a sharp, angry hiss. It shook itself once and settled back into its low crouch.

Alex didn't wait. He backed the Arosaurer behind a half-collapsed guild annex, using the structure as a shield. The Liger's eyes tracked him through the gaps in the rubble. It circled, testing the angle.

"Come on," Alex murmured. "Show me which way you want to go."

The Liger lunged right. Alex pivoted left, keeping the building between them, and fired a burst from the autocannons as the beast rounded the corner. The rounds sparked off its shoulder. The Liger flinched from the beam projector's housing as Alex raised it, even though the weapon was still cycling. The beast pulled back behind a stone pillar.

It had learned. The beam had hurt it, and it wouldn't give him a clean line again.

Alex used the moment to put another building between them. He moved the Arosaurer in short, controlled bursts, ducking behind cover, firing when an opening appeared, then relocating before the Liger could close. The beast was faster, but the narrow streets slowed it. Every time it committed to a charge, Alex was already somewhere else.

But the Liger wasn't trying to kill him.

Alex realized it between shots. The beast kept angling the same direction, toward the heart of the guild district. When Alex blocked its path, the Liger disengaged and tried another route. When Alex pressed too close, it drove him back with a swipe or a burst of static, then immediately resumed its course.

It was using him as an obstacle, not a target.

The Liger broke through a low wall and sprinted down a side street. Alex pushed the Arosaurer after it, but the beast had already gained thirty meters. It rounded a corner toward the guild's central plaza.

Alex's stomach dropped.

The guild. The archives. The vaults beneath them where they stored harvested Titan cores.

"No," he said. "You're not—"

He opened the throttle. The Arosaurer surged forward, its damaged leg protesting with every stride. Ahead, the Liger burst into the plaza. A line of Wardens opened fire from behind barricades. Kinetic rounds and energy bolts peppered its hide. The Liger didn't slow. It crashed through the barricade like it was made of kindling. One Warden went flying. Another scrambled clear just in time.

Alex watched the Liger close on the guild's main entrance, its mane building charge.

He pushed the Arosaurer harder.

The Liger hit the guild wall like a battering ram made of lightning. The reinforced stone cracked in a spiderweb pattern, blocks tumbling inward. Alex drove the Arosaurer through the breach a heartbeat behind it. Broken masonry scraped against the Zoid's shoulders, showering the cockpit canopy in dust and fragments.

Inside the storage annex, the Crag-Spinner core sat in its containment cradle, humming with soft white light.

The Liger's jaws parted. Its mane flared, arcs of bio-electricity leaping from the bristling filaments directly into the containment field. The field shimmered, buckled, and collapsed. Raw energy poured out of the core in a torrent of white-blue light, channeling straight into the Liger's open mouth.

Alex fired the beam projector. The bolt struck square between the beast's shoulder blades.

The hide absorbed it. The energy rippled across the Liger's body like water over stone, sinking in without a mark. Every cell was already charged past its threshold. The beam fed it.

The core dimmed. The last of its light drained away.

The Liger didn't grow. Something worse happened. Its presence doubled, pressed against the room like a weight. The mane lengthened, trailing arcs that scorched the stone floor. Its claws threw off sparks without touching anything. The air itself felt thick, charged, wrong.

Alex's HUD spiked past the C-rank ceiling. The numbers kept climbing.

"It just crossed into B-rank."

Lyra's voice came through the comms, tight with something Alex had never heard from her before. Fear.

The annex went silent except for the Liger's breathing and the crackle of its mane. Outside, the distant sounds of Wardens shouting seemed to come from another world. Alex felt the pressure of the beast like a hand pressing against his chest. The Arosaurer's frame creaked under the ambient charge.

The Liger turned from the drained core.

Its eyes found the Arosaurer. Found the cockpit. Found Alex.

The patience was gone. The calculation, the probing, the measured responses — stripped away. This wasn't a predator assessing an obstacle anymore.

It was a predator that had just eaten, and now it was angry.

The Liger roared. The sound carried physical force. The Arosaurer's canopy rattled in its frame. Dust fell from the ceiling. Alex's teeth clenched against the pressure wave that followed, a wall of charged air that made the instruments flicker.

His hands stayed on the joysticks. Steady.

Cold sweat ran down his spine.

The Liger's mane discharged in a single, focused bolt. Blue-white lightning caught the Arosaurer center-mass and hurled it backward through the guild wall. Alex's head snapped against the headrest. The world outside the canopy became a tumbling blur of stone and sky. The Zoid hit a residential structure two streets over. Timber and plaster exploded outward. The Arosaurer crumpled into the wreckage, its legs splayed at wrong angles, dust billowing around it like a shroud.

Alex's vision doubled. He blinked until the HUD stabilized, half its display amber with damage warnings. He worked the joysticks. The right leg responded. The left dragged, grinding against broken masonry. The Arosaurer hauled itself upright, shedding chunks of someone's home from its shoulders.

Outside, the Liger stepped through the breach it had made. It moved slowly now, deliberately, its mane trailing arcs that scorched the cobblestones beneath its paws. It didn't need to rush. It had already won.

The sky darkened. Clouds rolled in from the west, thick and bruised, drawn by the charge building in the air. The first drops of rain hit the Arosaurer's canopy, each one carrying a faint static sting.

The Liger raised its head. Its mane blazed, filaments standing straight out, feeding on the atmospheric pressure. It opened its jaws and roared.

The sound rolled across Veridia like thunder given teeth. Windows shattered. Car alarms wailed. The rain came harder, and every bolt of lightning that split the clouds seemed to answer the beast's call, striking the ground in its vicinity as if summoned.

The Arosaurer stood in the downpour, half-broken, facing a god of the storm.

Alex wiped blood from his lip and gripped the joysticks tighter.
