Building Zoids in a World of Titans

Chapter 5

The Arosaurer’s massive form surged forward, a blur of silver and cobalt against the green of the Xylosian forest. Alex felt the Zoid’s powerful hydraulics hum beneath him, a symphony of finely tuned machinery responding to his slightest touch. He nudged the joysticks, guiding the beast into a wide arc, flanking the charging Timber-Crest Bull.

“GRRRRROOOOAR!”

The Bull’s bellow was a sound of pure, primal fury, its massive antlers crackling with amber energy. It swiveled its head, its tiny eyes fixated on the Zoid, its earlier panic replaced by a focused, earth-shattering rage.

Alex grinned, the thrill of the chase and the dance of combat coursing through him.

"Alright, Arosaurer, let's show this old bull what we're made of."

He brought the Arosaurer's twin 105mm Kinetic Autocannons to bear. The System highlighted the Bull's flank, a section of slightly less dense hide, indicating a potential weak point.

"Fire!"

“CLACK-KA-THUD!”

The Arosaurer’s cannons cycled with a heavy mechanical sequence, spitting out two high-velocity shells. The projectiles streaked across the clearing, impacting the Bull's flank with a sickening thud. The Titan staggered, letting out a bellow of pain and surprise.

“SKREEE-CHAK-CHAK-CHAK!”

The Arosaurer responded with a triumphant, high-pitched metallic scream, its jaw servos clicking in aggressive emphasis.

The Bull, momentarily stunned, shook its head. It seemed confused, its seismic attack interrupted, its primal fury now redirected towards this new, agile threat. It pawed the ground, its antlers pulsing.

Alex felt the Zoid's satisfaction through the controls, a subtle resonance that mirrored his own. This was it. This was what he had worked for. The Arosaurer was more than just metal and Titan parts; it was an extension of his will, alive with a purpose he had given it. He could feel its readiness, its hunger for the fight.

"One more time," Alex urged, guiding the Zoid into another flanking maneuver. "Let's see if we can knock it off its feet."

Alex felt a surge of adrenaline as the Timber-Crest Bull lowered its head. The amber glow intensified, pulsing with raw energy. This was it. The seismic attack.

"Whoa, hold on, boy!" Alex yelped, instinctively pulling back on the joysticks.

The Arosaurer responded instantly, its powerful legs digging into the soft earth as it lunged backward. The ground beneath them trembled, a deep, resonant thrum that vibrated through the Zoid’s chassis and into Alex’s bones. The air crackled. Trees around the clearing splintered and fell, their trunks groaning under the invisible force.

“RRRRRRRUUUUUUMMMMBLE-CRACK!”

The seismic pulse slammed into the clearing, a wave of pure concussive force. Alex felt the Arosaurer buck violently, its internal stabilizers fighting to maintain balance. The cockpit lights flickered erratically.

"Just a little more!" Alex grunted, wrestling with the controls. The Arosaurer’s agility was its saving grace. It twisted, its tail lashing out to help counterbalance the Zoid as it slid backward, narrowly avoiding the direct brunt of the pulse.

The force hit them, a jarring impact that rattled Alex’s teeth. Dust and debris billowed, obscuring his vision. But they held. The Arosaurer had weathered the storm.

Slowly, the tremors subsided. The Bull stood panting, its antlers dimming, its massive frame visibly slumped. It had expended a tremendous amount of energy on that pulse, leaving it exposed and vulnerable.

Alex let out a shaky breath, a triumphant grin spreading across his face. "Nice save, Arosaurer! You handled that like a pro!"

The Zoid responded with a soft, contented hiss.

"Now, let's finish this."

He steered the Arosaurer forward, closing the distance. The Bull tried to lift its head, to bellow a challenge, but it was too slow.

"Flame throwers!"

“FWOOOOSH!”

Twin streams of superheated plasma erupted from the Arosaurer’s arm mounts, engulfing the Bull’s head and neck. The Titan recoiled, bellowing in pain and surprise.

“UUUUURRRRGGGHHHH!”

Alex didn’t let up. "Claws!"

The Arosaurer’s massive, energized talons snapped forward, raking across the Bull's destabilized flank. Sparks flew as metal met hardened hide and bone. The Bull staggered again, its injured leg buckling.

"And now for the main course!"

He drove the Arosaurer forward, lowering its head. The Electron Bite Fangs snapped shut, clamping onto the Bull’s exposed throat. Alex twisted the controls, simulating a powerful tearing motion.

“GRIND-CRUNCH-RRRRR!”

The Bull let out one final, choked roar as its seismic abilities were rendered useless and its vital components were compromised. It toppled forward, crashing to the forest floor with a tremor that shook the very ground.

Alex pulled the Arosaurer back, its systems humming with exertion. He looked down at the downed Titan, then at his Zoid’s gleaming, battle-scarred chassis. It was magnificent. Perfect.

"We did it, Arosaurer. We actually did it."

The Arosaurer emitted a series of satisfied clicks and whirs, its optics glowing a steady red.

Alex’s chest swelled with a heady mix of triumph and relief. The Arosaurer had performed flawlessly, exceeding even his most optimistic projections. It had faced a Rank C Titan, a creature of immense power and specialized weaponry, and emerged victorious. He patted the Zoid’s console, a gesture of pure, unadulterated joy.

"You were amazing, pal," he murmured, his voice thick with emotion. "Absolutely amazing."

He turned his attention to the fallen Timber-Crest Bull, its massive form sprawled across the clearing. The Zoid's head lowered, its red optics scanning the carcass.

"System," Alex commanded, his voice still buzzing with adrenaline, "scan the remains. Assess component viability for Zoid construction."

A soft chime echoed in the cockpit.

[SCANNING… TITAN COMPONENTS DETECTED. POTENTIAL FOR ZOID CONSTRUCTION: CONFIRMED. UNLOCKING BLUEPRINT: LANSTAG.]

Alex’s eyes widened. A new blueprint. The System had never offered one so readily before. He brought up the projected schematics on his HUD. The Lanstag. A medium-class Zoid, similar in weight class to the Arosaurer, but designed for a different role. Its profile suggested a more defensive posture, with a reinforced chassis and articulated shield emitters.

"Lanstag," Alex repeated, a grin stretching across his face. "And it can use the Crest Bull's core components for its own Zoid Core? That’s… that’s perfect." The thought of building another Zoid, especially one designed for defense, was exhilarating. He imagined the possibilities, the synergy between the Bull's seismic resistance and the Lanstag’s projected shields.

He was so engrossed in the blueprint data that he almost missed the faint blips appearing on his radar. Four signatures, closing fast.

Alex’s blood ran cold. Wardens.

He glanced at the Arosaurer's external sensors. Four figures, clad in red and silver, emerged from the trees at the edge of the clearing. He saw Anya, the woman in red, instantly. Her stern face was set in a mask of grim determination. He swallowed hard, his earlier exhilaration replaced by a fresh wave of panic. Had they seen the whole fight? Had they seen him? The amber canopy was tinted, yes, but surely Anya, with her sharp Warden eyes, could see the pilot’s silhouette.

Alex's fingers hovered over the comms panel, frozen. Through the external audio feed, their voices came through crisp and clear.

"What do we do, Ann?" That was Lyra, her tone measured but tight with tension.

"We can take it," Fia said, her voice buzzing with barely contained energy. "Four on one? Come on, Ann, let's—"

"Should we attack it?" Seraphine's question was softer, laced with concern.

Alex held his breath. His hand drifted toward the weapon controls, then stopped. Four Wardens. Rank 6 and 7, from what he could tell. The Arosaurer was fast, but not fast enough to outrun all of them if they coordinated. And he was low on ammunition after the fight with the Bull.

"No." Anya's voice cut through the others like a blade. "We don't engage. Not yet."

Alex exhaled slowly.

"But if it makes a move against us," Anya continued, her words deliberate and heavy, "we won't have a choice. Stay sharp. All of you."

The four Wardens held their ground, weapons raised but not firing. Watching. Assessing.

Alex didn't wait for their assessment to change.

He eased the throttle forward. The Arosaurer responded, its massive legs coiling beneath it as it turned away from the Wardens. The movement was smooth, controlled. Non-threatening. He kept the Zoid's profile low, presenting the broad armored back rather than the weapon mounts.

The Wardens didn't pursue.

Alex guided the Arosaurer toward the fallen Timber-Crest Bull. The carcass was enormous, easily forty tons of dense biological material. Precious material. He couldn't leave it.

"Alright, big guy," Alex murmured, guiding the Zoid into position. "Let's grab our prize and get out of here."

The Arosaurer lowered its head, the Electron Bite Fangs extending with a mechanical hiss. The jaws clamped down on the Bull's thick neck hide, locking into place with a heavy crunch.

"GRIND-CLANK."

Alex felt the strain through the controls as the Arosaurer's hydraulics engaged. The Zoid's legs dug into the earth, its tail swinging wide for counterbalance. Slowly, the massive carcass began to shift, then slide.

The Arosaurer dragged the Bull's body across the clearing, leaving a deep furrow in the forest floor. The weight was enormous, but the Zoid's actuators held firm, each step deliberate and powerful.

Behind him, Alex could still see the four Wardens standing at the edge of the clearing. They hadn't moved. Hadn't fired. Anya's silhouette was unmistakable, her shield still raised, watching him go.

Alex didn't look back again. He pushed the Arosaurer toward the treeline, the Bull's carcass bouncing and scraping behind them as they crashed back into the shadowed depths of the Xylosian forest.

The Wardens' voices faded, swallowed by the trees and the distance.

Alex allowed himself a single, shaky laugh.

"We're clear, Arosaurer. Let's go home."
