Avery was stunned. "How did you know someone was staying in our old house at night?"
When her dad first started working at Hard Property, he often put in extra hours. Sometimes, he would go to the old house during his lunch break, and other times, he would stay there overnight. But two months ago, her dad became a full-time employee. Now, the management and operations at Bard Property were running smoothly. The company even got him a driver, so he didn’t have to work late very often anymore. In other words, her dad hardly ever went back to the old house now.
Who could it be, then? Avery wondered.
The old man was confused about what was happening, but he said to her, "The house is always lit up at night, but I never see anyone coming out. Sometimes, when we try to find someone and ask the people in the house for help with fixing the water pipes and light bulbs, no matter how hard we knock, no one answers. Sometimes, the lights are even off. We thought your family got rich and doesn’t want to get along with neighbors like us."
"No way," Avery’s expression did not change. "Maybe our relatives secretly moved in. Even we don’t know."
She turned to Leon. "When did you see my house lights on at night? How long do they usually stay on?"
Leon thought for a moment and said, "It’s only a few days before Advent Sunday. The lights only come on at eight or nine in the evening."
Avery believed that the person who dared to sneak into their old house was not stupid and would not leave any clues easily. Therefore, she did not continue asking. After thanking Leon, she went upstairs.
The building had a steel door that needed either a key or a password to get in. The old house had a fingerprint lock that was really hard to force open. Avery couldn’t figure out how the person who quietly moved into her house managed to open both of these doors.
Arriving at the entrance of the old house, Avery examined the combination lock carefully. It showed no signs of having been pried open or vandalized violently.
"Did they tell our relatives the password and let them stay for the moment?" she wondered. But no one had mentioned it to her.
