Album 2, Track 83: Paths and Paths
“Can’t call the police. Horrible idea. If I call the police, then everyone gets into trouble. Keiko gets into trouble. Everyone finds out she’s my sister, and then it all goes to hell.” Kana whispered, buried in a notebook as she scribbled out flowers and then scratched them off, looping the action.
She did not know what the time was, but Emi had gone to bed. Kana did not have the same luxury. Those people were planning on storming the house tomorrow evening, and there was no stopping them. All it would take was one person breaking a window. That was it. One look and they would see the door.
“Yeah, but they won’t know what it is. Right? Just a door. Simple door. Door…in the middle of the living room. Funny door.” She chuckled, closing her eyes to contain the nasty headache. “Fuck, fuck, fuck! Ughhh! That can’t be it. There’s got to be something. Maybe someone could take her away?”
The door to their room opened without a knock, but she did not look up. She did not have the patience or time to talk to Jina right now. It could be the direst situation in the world, but it could not be more disastrous than this. Keiko could not get involved. She was not allowed to enter this world like that. She wasn’t meant for this.
“Kana?”
“Someone. Someone? Yamazaki? No. She knows Yamazaki. She’ll know I’m trying to stop her. I can’t clue her into anything. Must be a random person. Just a nobody. Just someone she doesn’t suspect. Yeah, something like that…”
More scribbles, and she tried to ignore the girl. Only now was she even knocking to get attention.
“Kana? What is this?”
“What!?”
She finally snapped and looked up, only to see Jina standing in the doorway wearing a gown. A long, white gown that matched her pink wig. With long white gloves and pink heels, she had something of an outfit on her.
“What are you doing?” She asked. “It’s almost twelve thirty. We need to leave. Kelsey and Yamada-san will be at the entrance in ten minutes.”
“What for?”
“What for…?” Jina raised her eyebrow, stepping closer and slamming Kana’s book shut. “The album launch party. We’ve been preparing for this for weeks now.”
“Who~?” Emi yawned and tried to open her eyes before falling back asleep out of exhaustion.
“Launch party?” Kana shook her head. “No, that’s…November. Twelfth. It’s…oh-”
When had this happened? She did not even remember what she was supposed to be doing anymore. Kana had completely forgotten about the music work because of this. Now, she had even less time. The album had…already come out. What was its name, again? She did not remember.
She did not care, really. Did she care? She could not remember.
“You go.” Kana picked the book back up and took a deep breath. “I’ve got work. Important work.”
Jina plucked it out of her hands. “You need to be there. For obvious reasons, Kana. Get up and get ready.”
“No. You don’t get it. I can’t go. Those people are gonna come tomorrow evening, and Keiko will be with them, and I can’t hav-”
The girl bent down and put a finger on her lips.
“We’ll figure it out, alright? We’ll find a way together. But you need to be somewhere at this moment. Stand up.”
Together. That was a word she hadn’t considered yet.
“Y-yeah…”

The White Lily Hotel
Sakai Entertainment Holds an Album Release Party for Velvet Beats
It had been a lie. Instant lie. Nothing happened together.
Kelsey refused to participate in the discussion because of the stance she had taken earlier. Jina tried to give ideas, but they were instantly turned down by Kana. There was nothing new to be found in the conversation, and they did not get any closer to an answer during the car ride.
When they got to the hotel and started mingling with people from the industry, treacherous members of the press, and the few fans who had won a contest to get in, there was even less time to discuss things. Kana was forced into a position she did not want to be in; surrounded by people she couldn’t hate more.
It also didn’t help that Jina had called in a crowd that Kana did not want to see. Girls that she had hoped she would never have to lay eyes on again.
“Minami-san! How are you? Are you fine? I’m fine! I’ve been keeping a proper eye on all the stuff regarding that tape, and it’s horrible that they would release something like that.” Chitose Yono approached without warning, raised her voice, then eventually settled into a whisper. “If you want my two cents, then I think it might be the people from the news. Don’t you?”
“Ugh…” Kana whispered under her breath before turning to the girl with a smile.
“That’s true. Why didn’t we ever think of that?” Kelsey raised her eyebrows, popping a toffee in her mouth. “It was totally, definitely those people. We should take that into serious consideration before making our next move. Don’t you think so, too?”
“I thought you were out of this. What happened to that?”
“Oh, don’t blame me.” She frowned and put an arm around Chitose, pulling the girl closer. “I’m only trying to have fun with the little one, so don’t take it too seriously. Please?”
Drunk. That is what she was. It took Kana a second for the realization to hit, but it dawned with some annoyance. Ever since the scene in that restaurant, Kana had tried to be as nice to the girl as she could. But at the same time, she had been wary of giving her much to drink.
In this case, unfortunately, she had already helped herself to way too much before any interventions could take place.
“W-what are you both talking about?” Chitose asked, clearly uncomfortable with the sudden proximity.
“Maeda-san…” Kana started, then slowly rescued Chitose from the girl’s grasp. “Oh, sorry. I meant Kelsey…is a little inebriated, so as to say. Don’t mind whatever comes out of her mouth. It’s all nonsense.”
“Uh, you started the conversation I was asking about, though?”
“Yeah. Don’t put too much thought into all of that either. How about that?”
One death stare, and Chitose’s eyes went wide out of fear. She mumbled back, “Okay…”
Kana looked back, slightly embarrassed. She hadn’t meant to scare the girl into submission, but this was the reputation she had built up now. Everyone in the room had been strangely distant from her, which she had appreciated until realizing why. They weren’t giving her space. They were merely maintaining it.
The further they were from the murderous loose cannon, the better. That was what was going through their minds. Now, that was also what was going through Chitose’s mind.
“Uh, is Yamazaki-san here?” The junior asked, turning to Kelsey. “I wanted to say hello once!”
“How do you know Yamazaki?” Kana asked.
“Eh? She was always with Kelsey-san, so she talked to me a lot. I know her pretty well after the resort. She’s really sweet!”
And…the fear was already gone. Kana clicked her tongue and looked away. There was no point in worrying about this girl, was there? She was just going to forget about it all the next minute. Kana wished she had that ability. It would be a hell of a superpower. A hell of a way to end up dead, too.
Kelsey gave the young one directions to the personal assistant, and Chitose happily skipped over to meet Naomi. As she vanished from sight and into the crowd, Kana felt her eyes drooping. She hadn’t even been close to prepared for this. She still couldn’t remember the name of their album. What was wrong with her?
Chitose looked a lot like Keiko, though. Her careless gait, near-instant forgetfulness, and even that infinite jar of sunshine she carried everywhere. Somewhere in the corner of the room, her little shout of joy at meeting Naomi echoed through the room, making everyone turn. Kana turned away and walked to a window, opening it just a little to let some fresh air in. The ACs were starting to suffocate her.
“What’s wrong?” Kelsey asked, walking over to her side and leaning against the window. “Choices finally catching up to you?”
“Shut the fuck up and leave. I don’t have the time.”
“I’m just saying. Your sister wouldn’t be going there if you hadn’t made that audio in the first place.”
“Yeah, and MidoriLIVE would still be a competitor. Do you have something to add? I’ll figure out the rest myself.”
“Competitor for what, Minami?” Kelsey smiled and opened another wrapper, eating the chocolate. “These go so well with the wine. It’s insane. I’m not drunk, though. I can think. And that thinking’s asking me why you’re bothering with this nonsense when the competition doesn’t exist anymo-”
“It will come back!”
“Is that why you’re attending Akiko’s farewell party? Because you’re sure that it won’ t be a farewell? Is that it? Grow up, Kana. It’s over. But the truth is that you’re addicted to destroying things. Said it before, and I’ll say it again. You’re only doing this because you’ve got nothing better to do. I mean, look at you. Did you even remember we were having this party?”
“Not the point. Just please leave me alone. I need to come up with something, or else Keiko is going to…she is going to…”
“Addicted, as I said,” She looked at the ceiling. “Chandelier. They made a pretty one as a reference.”
“What?”
Kelsey glanced at Kana’s clueless face and laughed. Keeping it quiet enough so as not to disturb the others, she buckled over with an absolute fit. Snorting her way through the opening of a third chocolate, the blonde girl took her time eating this one and finally stood up straight before fixing her hair.
Eyes locked on the ceiling, she swayed side to side at the low-volume music playing in the back. Tracks from their own new album.
“Chandelier,” Kelsey explained, finally looking at her and locking eyes. “You wasted four hours of my time in that green room to decide on the album title. Four hours, Minami. You think that’s a short time? And now…you don’t even remember it. You didn’t even remember you had to be here, clearly. What a fucking joke.”
“You’re a joke.”
Kana waited for a response, barely able to keep her eyes open. Her deafening ears were getting worse, too. Being sleepy always made them less responsive. When the time came, though, they did hear Kelsey’s strawberry quite clearly.
“Even the comebacks are getting lame. Once more…addicted. How about you just claim that you’ve been wasting time getting MidoriLIVE taken down, even though it had no actual benefit to you? Do that, and I’ll help you out.”
“One, you’re lying.” Kana sputtered. “Two, it wasn’t for nothing. Tomoko Ito is now angry at Tanaka, so it puts me in a good spot to take Lilac Shower down.”
“Great explanation. Not what I asked for. Let’s try again. You did it out of habit, and nothing else. You just wanted to see them burn. Say it.”
“I didn’t. I just fucking explain-”
“You did it cause you’re addicted to causing harm. That’s it. You wanted the high that came with recording that thing.”
“Leave me alone, Kelsey.”
“No. Just agree to it. You did it cause you’re addi-”
“Well, it takes one to know one, doesn’t it!?”
Kelsey, who had taken out a fourth chocolate, gave her a soft smile and put it back. Pushing herself off the window, she quietly took a step forward and ended eye contact with Kana. It didn’t take long for her sharp tongue to control itself and return to a neutral position. A single line.
One that Kana slightly regretted saying.
She was never going to get that help now. She should have focused on that part, and not her own hunt.
“Hey, sorry. I didn’t mean it.”
“No. Stop doing that. You fucking meant it.” She whispered, still walking away. Now, even she was making distance, as expected.
“Ok, fine. I meant it!” Kana got close, grabbing her wrist. “What were you gonna say?”
“Rules still stand, Minami. You can’t disrespect me and suddenly expect a complete withdrawal of the terms. Say the thing, and you get your help.”
Kana didn’t mean it. Of course, she didn’t mean it. She just didn’t want to say anything else out loud. Whatever Kelsey needed was fine. What was another lie? Just one more, and nobody would ask her what she wanted. One more would ensure that she could keep doing what she wanted, and save Keiko. Yeah, that last part was the important one.
“I…did it because I’m addicted to causing pain. There you go. I said it. I did it all because I just wanted to MidoriLIVE burn for no reason. Is that good enough?”
“Mostly.”
“Then hold your end. What’s your plan?”
The sound still echoed from the corner where Chitose and Naomi were talking. The junior really hadn’t held back when it came to her enthusiasm. Kelsey looked at them, gestured in the direction, and then gave a final clause.
“Only if she agrees. That’s the rule. Your sister hasn’t seen Naomi, and nobody knows she is associated with us. Not the people outside this room, at least. I’ll ask her, and she can go get your sister out of that riot tomorrow. As simple as that.”
“Y-yeah. That’ll do. Uh…than-”
“Go fuck yourself, Minami. I’m not doing it for you. Just never involve innocents in this shit again.”
