Chapter 118: State Debut

The alarm rang at 5:30 a.m.

Sahil was already awake.

He had barely slept.

Not because of fear.

Because today felt... different.

Outside the hotel window, the first rays of sunlight crept over the mountains surrounding the stadium.

He reached into his kit bag and touched the old red cricket ball Coach Kapoor had given him the previous night.

"When your opportunity comes... think about cricket."

The words replayed in his mind.

He smiled.

Then stood.

---

Breakfast was quieter than usual.

Every player knew Kabir’s replacement would finally be announced.

Coach Rana entered exactly at seven.

He didn’t sit.

He simply unfolded the team sheet.

"The pitch has less grass than yesterday."

"The ball won’t move as much."

He looked around the room.

"We need another middle-order batsman."

Sahil’s heartbeat accelerated.

---

Coach Rana continued.

"The Playing XI..."

He read the first ten names.

Arjun.

Aryan.

Rohan.

Vivaan.

One by one...

The familiar names echoed through the room.

Then...

He paused.

"The final position..."

He looked directly at Sahil.

"...Sahil Choudhary."

For a second...

Time stopped.

He had imagined this moment hundreds of times.

Yet hearing his name still felt unreal.

Coach Rana smiled faintly.

"Congratulations."

"You’ve earned your debut."

---

The room erupted in applause.

Danish was the first to stand.

"Finally!"

He wrapped Sahil in a tight hug.

"I don’t have to carry drinks alone anymore."

Laughter spread across the room.

Even Coach Kapoor chuckled.

Sahil simply bowed his head.

"Thank you, sir."

Coach Rana’s expression became serious again.

"Selection is easy."

"Keeping your place..."

He pointed toward the ground outside.

"...is much harder."

"I understand, sir."

---

An hour later...

The players walked through the tunnel.

Thousands of spectators had already filled the stands.

The noise grew louder with every step.

Sahil’s palms became damp inside his gloves.

He looked around.

Television cameras.

Commentators.

State association officials.

Everything felt bigger than district cricket.

Coach Kapoor walked beside him.

"Nervous?"

"A little."

"Good."

The coach smiled.

"It means this matters."

---

The toss went Himachal’s way once again.

Arjun chose to bat.

The openers walked onto the field beneath loud applause.

Sahil remained in the dressing room, fully padded.

Bat beside him.

Helmet resting on his knees.

He watched every delivery on the television mounted above the lockers.

---

The innings started steadily.

Arjun looked composed.

Aryan rotated the strike beautifully.

The opening partnership crossed fifty.

Coach Rana remained calm.

"No risks."

"Build."

The players nodded.

---

The opposition struck back.

Aryan edged behind.

A few overs later...

Another wicket.

Then another.

The scoreboard read:

Himachal Pradesh — 108/4 (24.3 overs)

Coach Rana looked toward the dressing room.

"Sahil."

He stood instantly.

"Pads?"

"Already on, sir."

Coach Kapoor smiled.

"I know."

---

Sahil adjusted his helmet.

The roar from outside suddenly became much louder.

Arjun walked over before he crossed the boundary rope.

"No hero shots."

He tapped Sahil’s shoulder.

"Play your game."

Sahil nodded.

"I will."

---

The umpire signaled.

The announcer’s voice echoed around the stadium.

> "Making his Himachal Pradesh Under-19 debut..."

> "...Sahil Choudhary!"

Applause rolled around the ground.

He stepped across the boundary rope.

Touched the pitch with his bat.

Then looked around the stadium one final time.

Months ago...

He had watched matches carrying drinks.

Today...

He was walking into the middle.

The wait...

Was finally over.

---

The bowler marked his run-up.

A tall right-arm seamer.

138 km/h.

Three slips waited.

The wicketkeeper crouched low.

The field closed in.

"First ball."

"Pressure him."

The captain’s voice carried across the field.

Sahil tapped his bat once.

Twice.

Then became completely still.

The bowler charged in.

The ball pitched just outside off stump...

And curved away late.

Weeks earlier...

He would’ve chased it.

Today...

He watched it disappear cleanly into the wicketkeeper’s gloves.

"No shot."

Coach Kapoor smiled from the balcony.

The lesson had stayed.

The crowd applauded politely.

Not for a boundary.

But for discipline.

Sahil wasn’t trying to announce himself anymore.

He was trying to stay.

The wicketkeeper caught the first delivery cleanly.

"Good leave," he muttered with a grin.

"Let’s see you do that all day."

Sahil didn’t reply.

He walked away from the crease, tapped the pitch once, and looked toward the non-striker’s end.

Arjun nodded.

Exactly the right decision.

---

The bowler turned at the top of his mark.

Second ball.

Fuller.

Angling into middle stump.

Sahil leaned forward.

The bat came down perfectly straight.

Tok.

The ball rolled back toward the bowler.

No run.

Coach Kapoor folded his arms.

Balance.

Head over the ball.

Straight bat.

Exactly what they had practiced for weeks.

---

Third ball.

Short of a length.

It climbed toward his ribs.

Instinct screamed at him to pull.

Instead...

He rode the bounce and dropped it into the leg side.

"Yes!"

The two batsmen sprinted.

His first run in state cricket.

The applause wasn’t loud.

But it felt unforgettable.

---

Arjun walked down the pitch.

"Good."

"Now breathe."

Sahil smiled beneath the helmet.

"I am."

"Liar."

Both laughed before returning to their creases.

---

The next few overs passed quietly.

Singles.

Twos.

Solid defence.

He wasn’t dominating.

He was surviving.

And at state level...

Survival came first.

---

The scoreboard moved steadily.

132/4

138/4

145/4

The bowlers searched for mistakes.

They didn’t find many.

---

The opposition captain brought on the left-arm spinner.

A short-leg and slip immediately moved into position.

The first delivery drifted toward off stump.

Sahil stretched forward.

Soft hands.

Dead bat.

The ball fell harmlessly beside the pitch.

"Very patient today."

The spinner smiled.

"Trying to be."

Sahil answered calmly.

---

The patience paid off.

The spinner floated one slightly wider.

Just enough.

Not too much.

Sahil’s front foot moved instinctively.

The bat flowed through the line.

CRACK!

A gorgeous cover drive split the infield.

The ball raced across the lush outfield.

FOUR!

The crowd applauded warmly.

Coach Kapoor smiled.

He hadn’t forced the shot.

He had waited for it.

---

"That’s your ball."

Arjun shouted from the other end.

"Only your ball."

Sahil raised his bat briefly.

Nothing more.

---

The partnership slowly grew.

Twenty.

Thirty.

Forty runs.

The bowlers became impatient.

Fielders spread out.

Singles became easier.

Pressure shifted.

---

With eight overs remaining, Coach Rana signaled from the balcony.

Accelerate.

Arjun understood immediately.

"So do we?"

Sahil asked.

Arjun smiled.

"Now."

---

The medium pacer returned.

First ball.

Length.

Sahil shuffled across his stumps.

Whipped it behind square.

Four.

---

Next ball.

Short.

This time...

The pull shot returned.

Controlled.

Along the ground.

Another boundary.

The crowd’s energy lifted.

---

The bowler grew frustrated.

Yorker attempt.

Low full toss.

Driven straight back past him.

The outfield was lightning fast.

Four more.

---

The commentators’ voices echoed around the stadium.

"This youngster looks remarkably composed."

"Excellent shot selection for someone making his debut."

"He isn’t trying to dominate every delivery. That’s impressive maturity."

---

The scoreboard flashed:

Himachal Pradesh – 198/4

Only two overs remained.

Arjun walked over.

"Last push."

Sahil nodded.

"No risks."

"Smart risks."

Arjun corrected with a smile.

---

The penultimate over disappeared in singles and doubles.

Then...

The final over.

The fast bowler charged in.

First ball.

Wide yorker.

Sahil squeezed it behind point.

Two runs.

---

Second ball.

Short.

He swiveled beautifully.

The pull shot flew over square leg.

One bounce.

Four.

Cheers erupted around the stadium.

---

Third ball.

Slower delivery.

He recognized it early.

Instead of swinging wildly...

He guided it toward third man.

Single.

Coach Kapoor quietly applauded from the balcony.

That single pleased him more than any boundary.

It proved Sahil was reading the bowler.

---

Arjun finished the innings with consecutive boundaries.

The players walked off together.

The crowd stood and applauded.

As Sahil crossed the boundary rope, he looked once toward the giant scoreboard.

---

Himachal Pradesh - 211/4 (40 Overs)

Arjun Mehra — 84* (91)

Sahil Choudhary — 36 (18)*

4×4 • 1×6

Partnership: 67 Runs*

---

Inside the dressing room, applause broke out immediately.

Danish was the first to reach him.

"You couldn’t even get out on debut?"

Sahil laughed.

"I tried not to."

Coach Rana walked over.

He extended his hand.

No long speech.

No dramatic praise.

Just four simple words.

"Well played."

Coming from him...

Those words meant everything.

---

Coach Kapoor stood beside him.

"Do you remember your first ball at camp?"

Sahil nodded.

"I chased the swing."

"And today?"

"I left it."

Coach smiled proudly.

"That’s why you’re here."

"It wasn’t the thirty-six."

He tapped Sahil’s helmet gently.

"It was the first ball."

---

As the celebration settled, the familiar blue screen appeared before Sahil’s eyes.
