Chapter 223: A disturbance in the night
Andrew woke up suddenly, his eyes shooting open as he looked around. Where was he? What was wrong? He didn’t know what it was, but all he knew was that something wasn’t quite right. It took him a moment to get his bearings, and as soon as he did, he understood what was wrong.
He was in his home that he shared with Maxwell, in the bed that the two of them shared. That alone was slightly interesting since he’d been gone for over a week. The bigger problem came from the cold spot next to him.
Maxwell wasn’t in bed with him.
"Max?" Andrew called softly, hoping that Maxwell would respond to him right away. Maybe he was thirsty and had gotten a glass of water? If that was the case, he’d be able to hear Andrew’s voice in the silent home. He reached for his glasses, grabbing them from the nightstand and sliding them onto his face. He checked the direction of the bathroom first, but the light wasn’t on.
For some reason, he didn’t feel like he was there.
Pushing the sheets off of himself, Andrew slowly got to his feet. The house was silent, and Andrew strained his ears to see if he could hear any movement at all.
"Max?" He called again, moving around the bed and stubbing his toe. He held in the curse word he wanted to exclaim, and moved a little slower as he headed for the living room. He scanned the area, wanting to turn on the lights, but at the same time there was just enough light outside to give him a good view of the-
Light outside?
That made Andrew pause. He’d turned off all the lights, locked all the doors. He hadn’t left the light on for the backyard, so why was it on? A sick, worrying feeling filled his chest as Andrew turned towards the backyard, but he halted in his steps.
