Chapter 198: A doctor who cares
"Andrew, you’re behaving as if you’re the one who just had a bunch of blood taken." Maxwell teased, resting his hand on Andrew’s shaking knee. He couldn’t help it.
He wasn’t sure if this was how other places did it, or if it was because the Doctor knew him, but as soon as they had shown up Maxwell had been shown to a private room to have blood drawn and Andrew had been chased out of the room so that they could perform a few other tests. Maxwell wasn’t ever alone in any sense, since Andrew could hear all the questions they were asking him from the hallway, as well as his answers, but Andrew tried to zone those out.
They did make a comment about bruising that had Andrew flushing, but that was all in regards to maybe inappropriate comments.
It still made Andrew uncomfortable, since he had never gone through an experience like this before. He didn’t think this was normal, but at the same time, he hadn’t been in a hospital in a long, long time. Since his Mom had died. That was an intentional thing on his part too.
"I’m just nervous." Andrew admitted, but Maxwell didn’t need to be told that. He squeezed Andrew’s knee, but it still bounced nervously. When Andrew looked over at him, his suit jacket folded across his lap, his slate grey dress shirt with his sleeves rolled up, and the off white hospital waiting room colour behind him, Andrew could feel his lips tremble.
"Hey. It’s going to be okay. I’m fine." Maxwell told him, and Andrew shook his head.
"I know you are trying to comfort me, but I watched it happen, Maxwell. Something is not right, and I just...I really appreciate your concern, but please let the Doctor see you before you try to comfort me. I’m going to be like this until we see them." Maxwell smiled, his hand squeezing until it was near painful.
"No, you are going to be like this even after we see the Doctor. I’m not a fool, Andrew. You’re a big worrywart when it comes to the people you care about." Andrew froze as Maxwell leaned in. "And you don’t like hospitals, right?" Andrew was still like a statue as Maxwell whispered those words into his ear. "That’s what I’m trying to tell you. It’s okay here. I’m not upset that you’re nervous, I just want you to know I’m not dying, there might be something wrong, but it’ll be a relatively easy fix. The omega nurses who looked at me said everything internally looked okay, alright? Just some...light bruising, but that’s to be expected with your size." Andrew felt his face heat, but he nodded.
He swallowed, and Maxwell sighed, leaning his head against his shoulder.
"Gosh, I can already imagine how loved your Mom must have felt given what little bit you’ve already given me." Andrew’s gaze widened as he stared at the man who was leaning against him, speaking of his Mom as if she was still here and Andrew’s chest swelled. His emotions had him by the throat, and reaching out, he wrapped an arm around Maxwell’s shoulder, holding him close.
They didn’t speak again, just remained touching each other as they waited for the Doctor to come check on them. Andrew was sure some of the wait was for the labs and bloodwork to be finished, but the longer the time dragged on, the more he worried something was wrong.
