Chapter 131: Double standards need not apply

Somehow, Maxwell eventually calmed down, and when he realised that he had, he was sitting down at the table, a fork and knife in his hand, sitting across from Andrew. It felt like he’d blinked, and then he was here.

He didn’t even remember what had happened to get him here, or what he had said to Andrew in between this moment and the next. As he stared at Andrew, his head a little lazy, Andrew noticed his gaze and smiled at him.

He was still in his lavender suit, and Maxwell was still in his gray suit. Both men appeared to be...normal. Maxwell took a deep breath as Andrew reached across the small table and touched his hand.

"Are you feeling better? I don’t think I’ve ever seen you so upset before." Andrew’s voice was kind, considerate, and Maxwell felt his face warm. Fuck. He’d wanted to be vulnerable, but apparently he’d gone too far. Especially if Andrew was looking at him like that.

"I...I think so." Maxwell muttered, staring at the food before him. He couldn’t even remember eating half of it.

"I had to cover you in my pheromones to get you to calm down. I wasn’t sure if that was the right thing to do, but it seemed to work. You liked it. Sorry about that. You’ve kinda been...a zombie for about 10 minutes or so. But I’ve been making sure that you’re okay. It’s good to see I didn’t need to call a Doctor." Andrew told him and Maxwell watched as he scanned Maxwell’s body.

He was speaking calmly, being very collected, but Maxwell knew that Andrew had probably freaked out. It wasn’t something normal to happen, and Maxwell couldn’t remember a time when it had happened to him before.

But, well, the bodies of people who had secondary sexes like them weren’t quite normal. Maxwell himself wasn’t a normal omega, but a dominant. His life had been ruled by the pheromones of others around him. He was lucky he was so stubborn, otherwise there was a very real possibility where he could have ended up as a shut-in and forced into a mating because it would let him live a relatively normal life.

Andrew didn’t fare any better, but Maxwell could only attempt to understand what his life was like. He couldn’t remember a time before he registered pheromones. He’d been young, even younger than his brothers when they had manifested. Apparently it was a common thing with dominant omegas. Too bad the testing for dominance wasn’t allowed for kids so young, and that there wasn’t a lot of knowledge in that field.

Similar to true alphas, there were just so few of them, and they usually came from higher up, well off families that they could ’choose’ not to be involved in the tests. Maxwell hadn’t done that. He instead made a company who ’strongly suggested’ that others participated in their studies while also making sure that their security was top notch. Maxwell didn’t care who he had to hire as long as he got results. And as long as they didn’t get wrapped in any scandals that he had to cover up, their business was their business.

He would be the first to admit that he’d learned that from his Dad, and also his grandfather. Hire whoever can get the job done, and done correctly, and make sure that they have no reason to turn on you. It was a pretty solid motto, and it hadn’t bitten him in the ass yet.
