Chapter 44: A wandering mind while your man’s in school

Maxwell ignored Andrew since it wasn’t good for his heart when the man started flirting with him like that, and instead forced the man to focus on the task ahead. Andrew chuckled when Maxwell pushed his face away from his, and Dr. Smith actively avoided looking at them. He was appreciative of how professional the man was, even when he was teasing Maxwell or Andrew.

Dr. Smith continued explaining basic principles to Andrew, and Maxwell watched him. He still looked pale, and his eyes seemed a little bloodshot, but he seemed okay. He was fine now.

When Maxwell had arrived at the gym...his heart stopped. Andrew had been motionless, lying on the ground while the security stood around him, protecting him from everyone else’s pheromones. The people in the gym had been in shock, and Maxwell had to send the guards away to make sure no one called 911 unless it was necessary. After all, they only assumed that Maxwell’s pheromones would help him.

Thank god they were right.

All of the blustering, denying, and protecting of himself felt worthless when Maxwell had come face to face with the chance that Andrew wouldn’t be in his life anymore. It wasn’t something he’d even faced when he had been kidnapped. Because at that point, Andrew had to still be alive, Maxwell wouldn’t have accepted any other outcome. But this?

Seeing the lively, handsome, jovial man who had made him breakfast, kissed him senseless, brought him snacks just to check on him throughout the day, made the house he had been living in for almost a year feel like a home still, lifeless? Maxwell had felt something crack inside of him.

He had a feeling he knew what it was, but he wasn’t going to address it until it became a problem. For now, he was going to make sure that Andrew got the treatment he needed. The treatment that would keep him alive and by his side.

Even if he had a suspicious feeling that Andrew was...that Andrew would never...

No. It was far too soon to be thinking those thoughts. As much as they had known each other for almost 9 months at this point, they had only been involved romantically for two and a half weeks. Maxwell would have liked to say three, but Andrew was slow, so Maxwell couldn’t count their first time together as the forming of their relationship.
