Chapter 37: When everything is going right

The next week was all about adjustments. Andrew had to adjust to the fact that Maxwell really didn’t want him leaving the house, and to what his new life meant.

Maxwell wouldn’t let him even consider going out to work, even if it was just in a grocery store or something, and Andrew had no idea why. He felt fine, he felt normal. If anything, he was thriving.

Maxwell’s kitchen had looked unused before Andrew had moved in. All new appliances, all new tools. There were things here that Andrew had no idea what they were, but he’d spent the week getting to know everything.

It was clear that Maxwell hadn’t stocked the kitchen, and the person who had also had no idea what went in a kitchen. They had just pressed order all and everything had arrived and was put away. It gave Andrew something to do in the week that Maxwell had basically secluded him.

He also located where the washer and dryer were in the house, and had set about washing everything he could. He found out that Maxwell usually had a maid service come and clean the house since he couldn’t be bothered, but Andrew insisted that if he wasn’t working, he could do that at least.

So, Andrew turned himself into a house husband. Maxwell would work away in his home office, and Mr. Newman would come in and out of the house at Maxwell’s order, and Andrew would put on some music and clean and cook and made sure both he and Maxwell were well fed.

Andrew was sure the house had never sparkled so much, nor smelt as good before he moved in. The smell of fresh baked bread permeated the house, and Andrew even looked up videos and started a sourdough starter. He was settling into the role quite well, and enjoyed every moment of it. Even if there was a slight twinge about how he missed his old job every now and then, he felt that most housewives felt this way in the beginning. And it’d only been a week. He’d get better over time.

Without a laptop, it was hard to do much of anything. He’d downloaded a reading app for when he was bored, and found that he quite enjoyed reading. It was a hobby he’d put down after his Mother had passed, but it was something that they had shared together in the past. He’d even picked up a few of her favourites and in his down time had begun to read them.

So, even though he wasn’t working, and it kinda felt like he was stuck inside, things were actually looking up. Especially his relationship with Maxwell. That was what was really making his day.

Maxwell was a very serious man. Andrew knew this, and had seen him when he was working before. He had just never seen him behind a desk before. Or taking charge of others. Listening to him talk to others over the phone? It was incredibly attractive. He was hot, in a suit even at home, and in charge. Watching him while he worked in his office was a new favourite pastime of Andrew’s. He knew that Maxwell knew he was there, but he never said anything. The only true sign that he knew Maxwell was aware of him was his pink, slightly flushed face. The colour his ears would turn and the way he would avoid looking at the door. It was very cute of him, and Andrew enjoyed it immensely.

The other thing he was enjoying was the fact that he ate breakfast, lunch and dinner with Maxwell. It had been years since he’d had someone to cook for, and also eat with. Tracey had never been to his house before, and it had been years since his Mother had passed. He hadn’t dated anyone for years prior to Tracey, so he had been by himself until now.
