Chapter 614: Their First Gym Battle!
~Third POV~
[Unova Region, Striaton City – Gym]
The Striaton City Gym was a masterclass in modern architectural elegance fused with culinary warmth, though right now, it felt less like a fine-dining establishment and more like a pressure cooker.
The air hummed with the ambient scent of roasted chestnuts, aged oak, and ozone. Above the battlefield, the massive digital countdown clock blinked mercilessly, the red numbers shifting with every heavy breath drawn by the combatants below.
*Tick-Tick-Tick*
From the elevated spectator stands, Azure Sky leaned his forearms against the polished glass railing, a picture of absolute, almost agonizing casualness. Perched securely on his right shoulder, Pikachu gave a soft, sleepy "Pika-chuu" as it twitched its ears at a burst of flame down below.
Nestled comfortably atop Azure's head, Eevee let out a tiny yawn, its fluffy tail wrapping once around the eighteen-year-old's spiked hair. Inside the warm breast pocket of Azure's tailored jacket, a soft, warm weight shifted: Pichu (Mew).
Rotom's orange, lightning-bolt-shaped antennae flickered with amusement. Rotom's distorted, digitized voice chirped from the Arc Phone hovering near Azure's ear, "My, me. Look at them struggling. The type matchups are completely upside down! It's like trying to cut a steak with a spoon, ZZT!"
Azure replied, a faint, confident smirk playing on his lips, "Don't underestimate them, Rotom the battle only got started."
His eyes tracked every micro-movement on the field. Azure added knowingly, "Black's got that hot-blooded fire in him, even if his brain is currently ninety 90% Unova League championship logistics."
A low, mischievous chuckle echoed from the shadows just behind Azure's heels. Gengar materialized halfway out of the floorboards, her crimson eyes gleaming with wicked delight, and said mischievously, "Ke-he-he-he! Should I go down there and eat their shadows, Boss? That would speed things up!"
Azure chuckled, scratching the phantom under her chin, answering, "Not yet, Gengar. Let them earn it. Besides, Zoura's having fun watching the rookie panic."
A foot away, disguised as a harmless little Zorua resting on the stadium seat, the illusion-fox projected a sharp, amused voice straight into Azure's mind, 'That girl, Bianca, is going to cry in five seconds. Look at her hands shake. Humans are so fragile when things don't go by their little rulebooks.'
Down on the battlefield, the situation was indeed looking grim.
The battle format was strict: 30 minutes on the clock, and the winner would be decided by the number of remaining Pokémon standing. Worse still, the Gym's rigid positional rules meant Black, Cheren, and Bianca were forced to stand directly opposite the elemental monkey that held a natural type advantage over their starter.
Black's Tepig, Tep, stood locked in a grim standoff against Cress's cool, collected Panpour. Cheren's Snivy faced Chili's fiery Pansear. And Bianca's Oshawott shivered slightly across from Cilan's grass-gnawing Pansage.
Black shouted, his voice echoing off the high-domed ceiling of the Gym. His fiery spirit was practically radiating waves of heat, his mind racing a mile a minute asked in a confused tone, "Hey! How did you guys know the exact order we'd send out our Pokémon? It's like you read our minds!"
Chili flashed a bright, confident grin, crossing his arms over his red apron and explained, "Obvious! We just positioned ourselves based on the type balance of your starters. It's basic hospitality, challenger style!"
Cilan added smoothly, adjusting his collar with the grace of a sommelier, "It might seem like an unfair disadvantage, but that's the defining philosophy of the Striaton Gym. We teach challengers how to navigate and overcome type adversity. And remember—no shifting positions during the match!"
Black gritted his teeth, his brow furrowing as he processed the constraint. He thought grimly, 'Right, the gears turning frantically in his mind. We can't swap places. That means this entire battle isn't about running away from bad matchups... It's about forcing a way through them!'
Black yelled across the line, his enthusiasm reigniting, "Cheren! Bianca! Listen up! This isn't about advantages—it's about figuring out how to smash through an opponent who has the upper hand!"
Bianca blinked back her nerves, taking a deep, shuddering breath. Her grip tightened on her Poké Ball as she muttered, "O-Okay! My Pokémon and I... we're going to do our absolute best, even if it's scary!"
With a sharp command, Bianca pointed forward, "Oshawott, use Tackle!"
*Thwack*
The little sea otter charged forward with surprising grit, slamming headfirst into Pansage. The grass-type stumbled back, taking a respectable amount of damage.
Cheren approved, adjusting his glasses with a sharp glint in his eye, "That's it! Even if they have the type advantage, it doesn't mean our attacks do zero damage! Keep the pressure on, and stay light on your feet. If we avoid heavy counter-blows, we still have a mathematical chance of winning!"
From the stands, Azure shook his head slightly, though his eyes danced with respect. He commented to himself, "Cheren's too analytical for his own good, but he's not wrong. Unova kids... they learn fast."
Rotom buzzed, "Too fast for their own good, ZZT!"
Down below, the triplets' demeanor shifted from friendly hosts to synchronized tacticians. Chili noted, his tone turning sharp, "You kids are starting to work together. Cute. But teamwork is second—no, third nature to us."
In perfect unison, Pansear, Pansage, and Panpour flared with energy. The three Gym Leaders commanded simultaneously, "Work Up!"
*FLASH*
A dense, crimson aura surged around the elemental monkeys, their muscles visibly tightening as their attack power skyrocketed. Bianca panicked, her eyes going wide as saucers, "Wh-what?! They're getting stronger all at once?!"
Cheren shouted too late, "Brace yourselves—"
*BAM—BAM—BAM*
The trio of monkeys unleashed a devastating wave of enhanced physical strikes. Oshawott, Snivy, and Tep were blasted backward by the sheer force, skidding across the polished stone floor and leaving trails of dust.
Black roared, refusing to yield, "Tep, use Ember on Panpour!"
*Fwoosh*
Tep scrambled to his feet, drawing in a deep breath and spitting a burst of flame straight at Panpour. The fire washed over the water-type, but Panpour barely blinked, the elemental resistance rendering the attack completely useless.
Cress smiled and coolly countered, "My turn! Panpour, Water Gun!"
*Splash-BOOM*
A high-pressure stream of water caught Tep squarely in the chest. The fiery piglet shrieked out in pain, sent tumbling head over heels before crashing hard against the ground, kicking up a thick cloud of debris.
Bianca desperately commanded, "Oshawott, use Water Gun too!"
Before Oshawott could gather water in its mouth, Cilan's eyes flashed. He countered, "Pansage, Vine Whip!"
*Whiiiiish-SNAP*
Green, leafy vines lashed out with terrifying speed, wrapping around Oshawott and slamming it into the floor multiple times with brutal precision. Oshawott let out a high-pitched cry of agony, its small body shuddering.
Cheren ordered, trying to regain control, "Snivy, use Wrap on Pansear!"
Chili countered effortlessly, "Burn it away! Incinerate!"
*Ssssssssh*
A scorching wave of intense flame engulfed Snivy. The grass-type let out a distressed hiss as the flames singed its leaves, dropping to one knee. Chili laughed heartily, pointing forward, and yelled, "And that's game, kids! It's all over!"
In the stands, Zorua's telepathic voice sneered in Azure's mind, 'And there it is. Complete collapse. Typical amateurs.'
Azure muttered softly, his gaze locked intensely on Black, "Not yet. Watch."
Down on the floor, Black's chest heaved. He looked at Tep, then across at Cheren and Bianca's battered partners. All three challenger Pokémon were in abysmal shape, gasping for air, bruises forming under their fur and scales.
Black muttered, his teeth gritted so hard they nearly cracked, "Tep... Snivy... Oshawott... we're in trouble…"
Black kept his emotions calm despite the troubling situation unfolding before him. He thought grimly, 'The lineup is terrible. They're hitting us with their strongest moves, exploiting every single weakness... But...!'
Black's voice cut through the arena like a whip, fierce and uncompromising in a resolute tone: "Don't give up, everyone! Attack with everything you've got left! Don't let them dictate the pace!"
*Flash*
The Gym Leaders' Pokémon grinned maliciously, glowing once more as they stacked another Work Up. With a synchronized roar, they lashed out, a flurry of empowered punches and kicks that blasted Black's team backward across the arena.
Snivy took the brunt of the kinetic force, hitting the wall with a dull thud before sliding down, completely unconscious…
*THUD*
Snivy is unable to battle!
Cheren cried out, rushing to his fallen partner's side, "Snivy!"
Black clenched his fists, his mind racing through the chaos. He looked at the lines of battle as realization hit him, thinking, 'Wait a minute... Everyone's fighting in strict rows because they think they must. But the rules just say no moving to a different position... they don't say we can't target outside our direct lane if the range is right!'
Black called out, a wild, brilliant spark in his eyes, "Cheren! Don't look at the lines! Just attack whoever you can reach!"
Before Cheren could even process the tactical leap, Bianca's emotions took over. Fueled by sheer desperation and a protective rage for her partner, she screamed, "Oshawott! Charge Pansage!"
Cilan blinked, surprised, and uttered, "Oh? A direct assault across lanes?"
*CRACK*
Pansage reacted instantly, swinging a razor-sharp vine. The strike hit Oshawott's prized scalchop directly, splitting the hardened shell with a sickening sound. Black and Cheren gasped in sheer horror.
But for Oshawott, that shell wasn't just a tool—it was its pride. Infuriated beyond reason, the little otter let out a fierce, guttural war cry, "Owwwww-shaaaa!"
*Swoooosh*
With lightning-fast reflexes, Oshawott reached down, grabbed its water-soaked, cracked scalchop, and hurled it like a weighted boomerang straight across the field—not at Pansage, but at Pansear!
*THWACK-SMASH*
The super-effective, desperate throw caught Chili's Pansear completely off guard. The fire monkey took the full brunt of the heavy shell to the temple, its eyes rolling back as it crashed heavily to the floor, kicking up dust and staying down.
*Thud*
Pansear is unable to battle!
Cheren and Black cheered in unison, the tables tipping violently in a single, reckless move, and yelled, "Yes! Great job, Bianca!"
*Whiiiip—SNAP*
But triumph was fleeting. Before Oshawott could even celebrate, a second set of vines shot out from Pansage, sweeping the sea otter's legs out from under it and delivering a final, crushing blow that rendered Oshawott unconscious.
*Thud*
Oshawott is unable to battle!
Cilan said smoothly, though a bead of sweat rolled down his cheek, and explained, "Don't worry, challengers. The scalchop of an Oshawott will grow back in time... though the battle won't last that long."
Cilan pointed up at the massive digital clock.
5:12... 5:11... 5:10...
Just over five minutes left on the timer. Two down for the Gym, but the challengers were down to their last standing hope.
Tepig—Tep—was the sole challenger left on his feet, though barely. Pansage and Panpour closed in like a pincer movement. Black commanded, his voice raw, "Tep, blast 'em with Ember!"
*Fwooosh*
Tep sucked in air, unleashing a flickering, pathetic puff of fire. Pansage sidestepped with effortless grace, easily dodging the sluggish flame. Before Tep could recover, Panpour flicked its tail, unleashing a point-blank Water Gun.
*BOOM*
The water slammed into Tep with devastating velocity. The little piglet let out a squeal of pure agony before collapsing face-first into a large puddle of water formed from the previous attacks.
*Tick—tick—tick*
30 seconds remaining on the clock.
Tep lay completely motionless in the murky water. Snivy was out. Oshawott was out. Across the field, Pansage and Panpour stood tall, breathing heavily but undeniably victorious.
Chili announced in a confident tone, a triumphant smirk on his face, "Time is almost up, and your Tepig is on the verge of fainting. That makes it two of us standing against zero of you. Match over!"
In the stands, Azure crossed his arms, a knowing grin spreading across his face. He didn't look worried for a single second. Pikachu on his shoulder let out a cute little "Chuu-pi~" and tipped its head.
Rotom's screen zoomed in digitally on the floor below. Rotom chimed in, "Oh? What's this, ZZT? Look at the little piggy!"
Chili stopped mid-celebration, his eyes narrowing in confusion. He muttered, "Wait... what are they doing?"
Down in the puddle, Tep wasn't unconscious. With sluggish, desperate movements, the little fire-type's snout twitched.
Beside him, the unconscious Snivy and Oshawott also stirred slightly. To the utter shock of the three Gym Leaders, all three fallen Pokémon had dragged themselves toward a pile of fresh, discarded leaves that Pansage had dropped during its earlier vine attacks.
They began to chew.
*Crunch-crunch-crunch*
Instantly, a warm, emerald-green glow enveloped Tep, Snivy, and Oshawott. Color rushed back into their fur and skin; their bruised muscles knitted together, and their breathing stabilized into strong, steady rhythms.
*BEEP-BEEP-BEEP*
The red digital clock hit zero.
"TIME UP!"
Cilan's jaw dropped, his urbane composure shattering completely. He muttered in disbelief, "No way... those are..."
Chili stammered, pointing a shaking finger, "Pansage's discarded leaves! They have natural restorative properties?!"
A proud voice rang out, "That's right."
Black stepped forward, a broad grin splitting his face as his Pokémon bounced back to their feet, full of vibrant health. He tapped his temple knowingly and explained, "I read it in the Pokédex! Ever since I accidentally broke my other two, I've made it a point to study the manual front to back and put it to good use!"
In the stands, Azure chuckled aloud, shaking his head, muttering to himself, "Classic Black. He forgets to eat, he forgets to breathe, but he memorizes the Pokédex entries like a sacred text."
Gengar cackled, fading slightly into the floorboards, "Ke-he-he! Sneaky little brats!"
Zoura conceded grudgingly via telepathy, 'Impressive resourcefulness. For the loudmouth, at least. But I, the great Zoura, can do better!'
The arena fell silent for three heartbeats before the Striaton brothers broke into collective, hearty laughter. Cress, Cilan, and Chili bowed in unison, acknowledging their defeat. Cilan said, stepping forward with three gleaming, triangular medals resting on a velvet tray, "Magnificent! You turned our own battlefield against us, utilized the environment, and caught us completely off guard."
Moments later, Black, Cheren, and Bianca stood side by side, proudly holding up their newly earned Trio Badges, alongside the TM for Work Up and their cash prize winnings for defeating the Gym Leaders and impressing them.
Black held his badge up to the light, his eyes shining with uncontainable ambition. He thought excitedly, grasping his first gym badge tightly, 'One step closer to the Unova League Championship. Champion Black is going all the way…!'
Suddenly, the ambient lighting in the Gym shifted, casting long, dramatic shadows across the battlefield. The triplet brothers turned in unison toward the spectator stands, their eyes locking onto Azure leaning casually against the railing.
Chili grinned, cracking his knuckles as he said excitedly, "Well, challengers. That was a stellar opening act."
Cilan nodded, gesturing toward the stairs leading down to the field. He greeted Azure in a respectful and polite tone, "Now, it's time for the main event. Azure Sky... step on down. Let's see how a four-time League Champion and Battle Frontier conqueror handles the Striaton Gym!"
Azure pushed off the railing, a thrill of genuine excitement running through his veins. Pikachu hopped down to his shoulder, Eevee adjusted its footing on his head, and Mew gave a cheerful squeak from inside his jacket pocket.
Azure murmured, a wide grin spreading across his face as he began walking down the steps, his shadow flickering with the faint, ominous outline of a lingering Darkrai, "Alright… Let's see what these Unova Gym Leaders are really made of."
