Chapter 197: The Grimaud Huntress
Morning light filtered through the tall windows of Rose’s bedroom at the Chevalier mansion. The silk sheets rustled as Rose stirred, her hand reaching across the bed instinctively.
Her eyes snapped open.
"Lucian?"
The space beside her was vacant. Rose sat up sharply, the blanket pooling at her waist. Her breath quickened. Her eyes darted to the balcony doors.
Her chest tightened.
No. No, no, no.
She had just found him. Just gotten him back. He couldn’t be gone again. He couldn’t—
The bathroom door clicked open.
Steam rolled out in a slow, white cloud. Lucian stepped through the doorway, a white towel wrapped loosely around his waist, water still dripping from the ends of his silver hair. His crimson eyes found Rose immediately, and his expression shifted.
She was sitting upright in bed, tears streaming down her cheeks.
"Hey." Lucian frowned slightly, tilting his head. "What’s wrong?"
He walked toward the bed. Before he could reach the edge of the mattress, Rose launched herself off the bed and crashed into him. Her arms wrapped around his torso, her face pressed against his bare chest. Her tears soaked into his skin.
His hands hovered for a moment before settling on her back.
"Never disappear again." Rose’s voice was muffled against his chest, trembling. "Promise me. Never again. I thought—I thought—"
"Alright." His voice was low, steady. His chin rested on top of her head. "I’m here. I just went to wash up."
Rose sniffed. She pulled back just enough to look up at him, her hazel eyes red and puffy, her lower lip still quivering. "You promise?"
"I promise. Damn it Rose, I really thought something bad happened."
She held onto him for another long moment before finally stepping back, wiping her eyes with the back of her hand. She took a shaky breath. Her expression shifted — the vulnerability fading, replaced by something brighter. A mischievous smile crept across her lips.
"I called Clara and Ryan over," she said.
Lucian raised an eyebrow. "Here?"
Rose nodded, her smile widening. "They’re on their way from New Miami. They don’t know you’re here." Her eyes sparkled with barely contained excitement. "I want to surprise them."
Lucian stared at her for a moment, then exhaled softly through his nose. "Now that’s the happy Rose I like to see."
Rose grinned. She turned and grabbed a robe from the chair near her vanity, pulling it on as she walked toward the bedroom door. "I’m going to cook. A lot of meat. We’re having a banquet."
"You cook?" Lucian asked, a hint of amusement in his voice.
Rose shot him a look over her shoulder. "Don’t sound so surprised. I can grill a steak." She paused at the door, her hand on the handle. "Father’s away on business, so there’s no problem. And Mother will be back soon." Her expression softened. "It’ll be good. All of us together again."
She opened the door and disappeared down the hallway.
Lucian stood in the bedroom, silent. The faint smell of her shampoo lingered in the air. He looked out the window toward the Paris skyline, his crimson eyes distant.
He hadn’t planned on staying long. There were things he needed to do.
But at least he could see Clara before he left.
Three thousand kilometers away.
Eastern Europe. The Carpathian foothills.
Wind howled through the mountain passes. The Du Maurier intelligence outpost sat nestled in a valley between two ridges — a converted medieval fortress, its stone walls reinforced with mana barriers, its towers fitted with modern surveillance equipment.
The vampires inside thought themselves secure.
They were wrong.
A figure descended from the clouds.
Silver hair whipped in the wind. Green eyes burned with an intensity. She hung suspended in the air, wind mana swirling around her in visible currents — spiraling ribbons of compressed air that made the sky itself groan.
Lena Grimaud.
Her hands moved. Seal after seal — fingers interlocking, twisting, spreading, pressing together. Each motion sent a pulse of mana outward. The wind around her intensified. Fwooooosh. The clouds above began to rotate.
Her eyes glowed brighter.
Above the outpost, the sky split open.
A massive white formation materialized — a complex array of intersecting circles, runes, and geometric patterns that blazed with pale light. It expanded outward, covering the entire fortress and the surrounding compound in a dome of radiance.
The vampires on the ground looked up.
"What is that—"
"The barrier! Someone’s breaching the—"
"It’s above us! Above!"
Their voices cut short.
The formation pulsed once. Thrum.
And then they felt it.
A pulling sensation. Their life force — the very energy that sustained their undead bodies — was being ripped from them.
Hssssssss.
One by one, the vampires collapsed. Their skin cracked as their eyes dulled. Their bodies withered, shrinking inward as everything that made them alive — or undead — was siphoned upward into the white light.
Aaaagh—
A scream. Then silence.
Then another scream. Then silence.
Within sixty seconds, the fortress was a graveyard. Dozens of vampires — operatives, soldiers, intelligence officers — lay scattered across the stone floors.
The formation dimmed. The light faded. The clouds stopped rotating.
Lena descended slowly, her bare feet touching the cobblestone courtyard. She walked forward, stepping over a dried husk without looking down.
She had left one alive.
A young vampire — barely a century old — lay on the ground near the fortress entrance. His body trembled violently. His skin had aged decades in seconds. Grey streaks ran through his hair. His eyes, wide and bloodshot, stared up at the silver-haired girl who had just extinguished every living thing in this compound with a formation in the sky.
Skkk. Skkk. His fingernails scraped against the stone as he tried to crawl backward.
Lena stopped in front of him. She crouched, her green eyes level with his. Her expression was utterly devoid of emotion.
"Where is he?" Her voice was soft.
The vampire’s jaw quivered. "W-who—"
"You know who." Lena’s head tilted slightly. "The silver-haired boy. The one your clan calls the prophecy child. Where is Lucian Grimaud?"
The vampire’s eyes darted frantically. "I—I don’t—the Du Maurier family, they—they had him, but then there was a ritual, I heard—Athens—"
"Athens." Lena’s eyes narrowed. "Is he there now?"
"I don’t know! I swear, I don’t know! The communications went dark after the ritual—"
Lena stared at him for a long moment.
The vampire’s mouth opened to beg again.
His body crumpled. His chest caved inward as the last of his life force was gently, silently pulled from him.
Lena stood. She looked out over the courtyard of husks. The wind stirred her hair.
"Hold on, brother." Her voice was quiet. "I’m coming."
She rose into the air, wind mana spiraling around her once more —
A figure materialized beside her.
A woman dressed in flowing white robes, her face obscured by a veil of pale silk. She hovered in the air beside Lena as if standing on invisible ground. Her presence was serene, untouchable.
"My lady," the woman in white said, her voice smooth and reverent. "The Great Mother has called you back."
Lena’s eyes shifted to the woman. The warmth that had briefly touched her expression when she spoke of her brother vanished. What remained was cold expression.
"Tell her I’m not coming back until I find my brother."
The woman in white hesitated. "But my lady, the Great Mother’s orders—"
FWOOOOSH.
Wind erupted around Lena. She shot across the sky like a silver comet, leaving the woman in white hovering alone above the fortress of the dead.
