A Secret with Teeth
Chapter 26
The problem with a vow was that everyone who knew it existed began walking around its shadow.
Not the terms.
Most of them did not know the terms.
That did not matter as much as Rei had hoped.
A secret with no shape could sometimes disappear into ordinary ignorance. A secret with a boundary around it did the opposite. It made people look for the edge. Adults were especially bad about this. Give them silence and they called it discipline. Give them a refusal and they called it immaturity. Give them a vow, even one they could not prove, and they began measuring every sentence for the place it stopped.
The Gojo household sent no second messenger.
That was almost polite.
Instead, three days after Satoru’s last note, Kyoto received a formal request for a post-incident closure session. The wording was excellent. That made it worse. No accusation. No pressure. No mention of Binding Vows. No mention of Rei’s hidden depth, Satoru’s statement, the covered box, or the way a child had looked at another child and chosen a boundary that adults had not made.
Only this:
A brief mutual clarification between involved student parties may prevent future misunderstanding arising from emotionally charged interpretation of the incident.
Rei read the line twice.
Then a third time.
Daigo, who had been standing beside him in the archive because he had claimed the official right to inspect any paper that might “make Gojo happen again,” leaned over his shoulder.
“That is the worst sentence I have ever seen”
Tomonari said “It is not the worst”
Daigo turned.
“That was not an invitation to rank it”
“It is very bad” Tomonari said
“Thank you”
Akiha took the paper from Rei and read it once.
Her expression cooled.
“They want to put both of you in a room and see what the room refuses to say”
Oda, seated behind her ledger, made a pleased sound.
“Good”
Akiha looked up.
Oda adjusted her glasses.
“Not the request. Your sentence”
Daigo pointed at Akiha.
“Write it down”
Akiha did not.
Moriyama entered at that exact moment, which suggested the hallway had become informant enough to deserve a salary.
She took the paper from Akiha, read it, and folded it with no visible emotion.
“That is not happening as written”
Rei’s injured palm throbbed beneath the bandage.
“Is it happening at all?”
Moriyama looked at him.
“Yes”
Daigo groaned.
Tomonari lowered his gaze.
Akiha said nothing.
That was how Rei knew she was angry again.
Or still.
Probably still.
Moriyama tapped the folded request against the table.
“If we refuse entirely, they will call it obstruction. If we accept their phrasing, they will call the result clarification. So we give them a worse version”
Daigo frowned.
“Worse for who?”
“Them”
“Oh. Good”
Oda closed her ledger.
“Archive courtyard. Adults visible but not within conversational range. No reports taken during the exchange. No student questioned afterward without instructor approval. No binding statements permitted”
Rei looked at her.
Oda looked back.
“No vows”
“I was not planning to make one”
“Children rarely plan properly”
Moriyama said “A statement I regret finding useful”
Akiha handed the request back to Rei.
Her eyes stayed on his face.
“Third line”
Daigo patted his sleeve immediately.
“I have the paper”
Rei nodded.
“I know”
Akiha waited.
He understood.
He looked at all three of them.
“Gojo will be present. His presence changes risk. I knew before the room happened”
Daigo stared.
Then nodded once, sharp and reluctant.
“Good”
Tomonari asked “What kind of risk?”
Rei breathed.
The answer wanted to become careful enough to be useless.
He stopped it.
“He may ask about what he saw. I cannot answer the center. He may test the vow’s edge. I do not know how the edge behaves. He may also notice if I use answers meant to quiet him rather than answer him”
Akiha’s gaze sharpened.
“Fourth line”
“I know”
“Say it”
Rei looked at Daigo.
Daigo was watching him with surprising severity.
Rei said “If I cannot answer, I will say I cannot answer. I will not give him a quieting answer if I can recognize it”
Akiha said “If you can recognize it”
“Yes”
Daigo muttered “That is annoyingly honest”
Tomonari said “Appropriate limitation”
Daigo glared.
“It was fine until you blessed it”
Moriyama watched the exchange without interrupting.
That was new.
Maybe she was letting the paper work.
Maybe she was enjoying the discomfort.
Both seemed likely.
The closure session was scheduled for the following afternoon.
Rei spent the morning not preparing.
This was a lie, but everyone in the house was polite enough not to say so immediately.
Haruto found him in the side garden, standing near a stone lantern with his bandaged hand tucked inside his sleeve and his cursed energy arranged into something that looked almost relaxed if viewed by someone incompetent.
Haruto was not incompetent.
“You are rehearsing silence”
Rei did not turn.
“That sounds impossible”
“It is not”
“Then yes”
Haruto stepped beside him.
For a while, they looked at the garden without pretending the garden was the point.
Finally, Haruto said “What are you afraid he will ask?”
Rei watched a leaf fall into the basin.
“What did I see?”
“And?”
“What are you?”
Haruto’s face did not change.
“And?”
Rei’s voice lowered.
“What am I allowed to become to you now?”
That one made the air heavier.
Haruto did not answer quickly.
When he did, his voice was quiet.
“That question is not only his”
Rei closed his eyes.
“I know”
“Good”
The word did not comfort him.
It rarely did.
Haruto folded his hands into his sleeves.
“Satoru Gojo made a narrow vow. That means he accepted a limit around disclosure. It does not mean he accepted a limit around wanting”
“No”
“It does not mean you are obliged to satisfy that wanting because he restrained it once”
“I know”
Haruto looked at him.
Rei sighed.
“I am trying to know”
“Better”
From the veranda, Sayuri said “You both sound terrible before lunch”
Rei opened his eyes.
Sayuri stood with a tray balanced in one hand and the expression of someone who had allowed father and son to be grim for exactly as long as necessary and not one breath longer.
Haruto said “This is important”
“Yes. That is why you should eat before turning it into philosophy”
Rei almost smiled.
Sayuri stepped down into the garden and placed the tray on the bench.
Rice balls. Pickled plum. Water. No tea.
Rei looked at her.
“The tea?”
“Alive”
“Good”
“Do not sound relieved. It heard about your previous apology and has become arrogant”
Haruto looked toward the sky.
Rei sat.
The food helped more than the advice.
That was embarrassing.
After eating, Sayuri wrapped the outer layer of his bandage again, not because it needed wrapping but because her hands had chosen a task. Rei let her.
Her fingers were careful around the wound.
“Do you know what I would tell him?”
Rei looked at her.
“What?”
“That a locked room is still yours even if someone knows there is a room”
He absorbed that slowly.
Haruto said “Useful”
Sayuri looked pleased.
“I try”
Rei looked at the garden.
“What if he says he has a right to know because he saw?”
Sayuri’s hands paused.
“Then you tell him sight is not ownership”
Haruto nodded.
“If he respects that, the vow has meaning beyond structure”
“And if he does not?”
Haruto’s eyes sharpened.
“Then we learn what the vow cannot solve”
The archive courtyard had been chosen because it was impossible to mistake for neutral ground.
Oda had seen to that.
On one side stood the auxiliary archive, old wood and older ink. On the other side, the training hall wall, scarred by weather and repaired in mismatched panels that no one had bothered to make beautiful. A narrow stone path crossed the center. Rainwater from the morning still clung to the edges of the basin. The gate remained open. Moriyama stood near it with her arms folded, close enough to intervene, far enough not to hear every word if no one shouted.
Unauthorized usage: this tale is on Amazon without the author's consent. Report any sightings.
Oda sat at a small table under the eaves, writing nothing.
This was the most threatening form of archivist.
Haruto and Sayuri stood farther back, not together.
Akiha, Daigo, and Tomonari had not been invited.
They were present anyway.
Not in the courtyard. That would have become a statement too sharp to survive. They stood in the archive corridor, visible through the half-open side screen, pretending to sort tags.
Daigo was holding the folded paper.
Subtly.
Which meant not subtly at all.
Rei noticed.
So did Satoru when he arrived.
Of course.
Satoru came with one attendant, not two. The attendant looked as if he had already lost an argument about distance and was now hoping architecture would protect him from responsibility.
Satoru wore dark glasses, white hair loose, hands tucked into his sleeves. He stopped at the entrance, looked at Moriyama, then at Oda, then toward the corridor where the cohort was failing to become furniture.
His grin appeared.
“You brought witnesses to a conversation about not asking questions”
Moriyama said “They brought themselves”
Daigo muttered from the corridor “I can hear you”
Satoru looked delighted.
“I know”
Akiha’s voice followed.
“We all know”
Tomonari said “This is already deteriorating”
Oda did not look up.
“Begin before it becomes interesting for the wrong reasons”
Satoru walked toward Rei and stopped at the center of the courtyard.
Closer than last time.
Not too close.
Another visible restraint.
Rei hated how much he noticed it.
Satoru looked at his bandaged hand.
“Still ugly”
“The bandage or the wound?”
“Yes”
Rei almost smiled.
Almost.
“The stamp is still uglier”
“Good”
The attendant looked baffled.
Moriyama did not.
That was worse.
Satoru rocked back on his heels.
“They said this is a mutual clarification”
Rei said “They were wrong”
“Yes”
“You came anyway”
“So did you”
“I was told to”
“You listened?”
Rei looked at him.
Satoru grinned.
“Sorry. Stupid question”
The air between them carried more than the words.
The last time they had stood close, the box had knocked, the mask had opened, and Satoru had made a vow that turned his own sight into something he could not spend freely. Now they had to talk around the shape of it without making the shape another object everyone could point to.
Satoru spoke first.
“I can still ask”
“I know”
“You can still refuse”
“I know”
“That is annoying”
“Yes”
“No. You are supposed to say it remains true”
“It remains true”
Satoru’s grin widened.
“There you are”
Rei did not answer.
Satoru’s face shifted by a fraction.
“What part of you did I see?”
The question landed clean.
Not what are you?
Not how strong are you?
Not what technique?
Worse.
What part.
Rei breathed.
In.
Hold.
Out.
“I cannot answer that fully”
The corridor was silent.
Daigo had stopped pretending to sort tags.
Akiha had too.
Satoru tilted his head.
“Can you answer it badly?”
“No”
“Can you answer it sideways?”
“Yes”
“Do that”
Rei looked at him.
“No”
Satoru blinked.
Then frowned.
“Why?”
“Because you would treat the sideways answer like a path”
“It would be one”
“Yes”
“That is how answers work”
“No. That is how hunting works”
The attendant inhaled too sharply.
Moriyama shifted.
Satoru’s smile vanished.
Not from anger.
From attention.
Rei continued before fear could make him prettier.
“You asked what part of me you saw. If I answer around it, you will start mapping the negative space. You are good at that”
Satoru’s mouth twitched.
“I am excellent at that”
“That is the problem”
He stared at Rei.
Then said “You are saying no properly”
From the corridor, Akiha said very softly “Good”
Rei did not look.
Satoru did.
Only for a second.
Then back.
“Fine. Worse question”
Rei closed his eyes briefly.
“That is not how this should go”
“It is how this will go”
“Moriyama-sensei said no questions outside classification”
“I am not classified”
Oda looked up.
“Everyone is classified if I have enough time”
Satoru turned toward her.
“That sounds like a threat”
Oda returned to her blank page.
“It was comfort”
Satoru looked genuinely unsettled.
Good.
Rei used the moment to breathe.
Satoru returned his attention to him.
“What did it cost you?”
Rei froze.
Not what he had expected.
Satoru noticed.
Good.
Bad.
Good.
“What?” Rei asked
“The box. The thing you did. Not what it was. What it cost”
The question moved differently.
It did not press on the vow.
It pressed on the wound.
Rei looked down at his hand.
“Blood”
Satoru’s expression said he deserved better than that answer.
Rei added “Pain. Some stability. Too much attention. A conversation with Akiha I had delayed too long”
Satoru’s gaze moved toward the corridor.
Then back.
“That is not the cost I saw”
The air tightened.
Rei looked at him.
Satoru’s voice became lower.
“I am not saying it”
“I know”
“I can feel where not saying starts”
That sentence chilled the courtyard.
Haruto’s attention sharpened from the edge of the space.
Sayuri went very still.
Rei felt the vow as if it had brushed the air between them.
Satoru flexed one hand inside his sleeve.
“It is like a stupid wall inside my mouth”
Daigo whispered “That sounds awful”
Tomonari whispered “Do not comment on vows”
Daigo whispered “I am commenting on mouths”
Akiha whispered “Stop”
Satoru ignored them.
Mostly.
“I tried to write it once”
Rei looked up.
Satoru continued “Not the secret. The shape. The thing beside it. The vow pulled”
Rei’s throat tightened.
“You tested it”
“Yes”
“Why?”
“Because I wanted to know where it was”
“That is dangerous”
“Yes”
“Did it hurt?”
Satoru looked offended.
“No”
Then he paused.
“A little”
Rei stared.
The admission sat there between them, small and unwilling.
Satoru scowled.
“Not like that. Not pain. More like biting a spoon”
Rei had no idea what that meant.
Apparently neither did the attendant.
Oda said from the eaves “An unpleasant and avoidable experience”
Satoru pointed at her.
“Yes”
Rei almost laughed.
The laugh did not come.
“What did you try to write?”
Satoru smiled slightly.
“You asking means I win”
“You can refuse”
“I can”
A pause.
Then Satoru said “I tried to write what I saw was not small”
The vow did not react.
Or if it did, Rei could not feel it.
Satoru watched him watching the silence.
“Safe sentence”
Rei hated that phrase.
So did Satoru, judging by his face.
Rei asked “Why tell me?”
Satoru’s smile faded again.
“Because you keep acting like the vow solved what I know”
“I do not”
“You do”
“No”
“Yes. You stand there like because I cannot tell them, what I saw stopped having teeth”
Rei went still.
A secret with teeth.
Satoru stepped closer.
One pace.
Not enough to break politeness.
Enough to show he chose it.
“It still has teeth”
Rei’s bandaged hand pulsed.
“I know”
Satoru’s eyes narrowed behind the glasses.
“No. You know it as danger. You do not know it as mine too”
The words struck harder than expected.
Haruto moved slightly.
Sayuri did not stop him.
Moriyama watched Rei, not Satoru.
That was worse.
Rei looked at the ground.
A line of rainwater crossed the stone near Satoru’s foot.
Yours too.
The idea was wrong.
Also true.
Satoru had seen something. Rei had asked for it to remain his. Satoru had bound himself to that. The secret was still Rei’s nature, Rei’s danger, Rei’s body, Rei’s hidden life.
But the restraint around it now lived in Satoru too.
Not the secret.
The not-saying.
That had become his.
Rei said “I did not think of it that way”
Satoru made a face.
“That is very rude”
“Yes”
“Good. At least you know”
Rei looked up.
“What did the vow cost you?”
The question changed the courtyard.
Satoru did not answer immediately.
That was answer enough to make the adults silent.
Finally, he said “The first day, nothing”
Rei waited.
Satoru looked away toward the basin.
“I thought it was easy because I decided it”
His mouth twisted.
“Then the Gojo adults started asking questions badly”
Rei’s chest tightened.
“I wanted to answer in a way that made them stop wanting to ask anything ever again”
“That sounds like you”
“Yes”
“That is not praise”
“I know”
Satoru looked back.
“The vow stopped one sentence”
“What sentence?”
The air tightened again.
Satoru grinned.
Small.
Sharp.
“Cannot say”
Rei nodded.
“Good”
“No. Annoying”
“Also good”
Satoru rolled his eyes.
“I hated you for about half a breath”
Rei stopped.
The corridor stopped too.
Even Daigo did not speak.
Satoru continued, gaze steady behind dark glass.
“Then I hated them more. Then I hated the vow. Then I decided the vow was doing what I told it to do, so hating it was stupid”
Rei swallowed.
“And now?”
“Now I am still annoyed”
“That is your normal condition”
“Yes”
Satoru’s grin returned.
This time, Rei did laugh.
Only a little.
It did not feel safe.
It felt real.
Satoru watched the laugh like it was another forbidden thing and, for once, did not reach for it.
Rei said “I am sorry”
Satoru immediately looked disgusted.
“No”
Rei blinked.
“No?”
“No. Do not apologize for the vow”
“You just said it cost you”
“I chose it”
“That does not erase cost”
“I know”
“Then what am I allowed to say?”
Satoru stared at him.
Then smiled like Rei had finally asked an interesting question.
“Nothing adult”
Rei heard Sayuri make the smallest amused sound behind him.
Traitor.
Satoru continued “Do not say thank you like your mother. Do not apologize like your father is taking notes in your spine. Do not say you understand when you are deciding which part of understanding to show me”
Rei felt that one.
Satoru stepped back.
“Say something mean”
Rei stared.
“What?”
“That is better from you”
“I am not performing meanness for your comfort”
Satoru’s grin turned bright.
“There”
Rei stopped.
Of course.
Akiha made a sound in the corridor.
Not quite laughter.
Satoru looked pleased with himself.
Rei sighed.
“You are impossible”
“Yes”
“That was not praise”
“It should be”
The courtyard breathed again.
Not easier.
Different.
Rei looked at him for a long moment.
Then asked “What do you want now?”
Satoru’s expression sharpened.
“There it is”
“I mean it”
“I know. That is why it is interesting”
Rei waited.
Satoru looked toward the archive wall, then the open gate, then back at Rei.
“I want to know”
“No”
“I know”
The answer came too quickly.
Rei narrowed his eyes.
Satoru continued “I want to ask until you say something real enough that I can stop feeling like the vow is holding a door I have not even named”
“That sounds like wanting to make it yours”
Satoru’s expression cooled.
“It is not”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes”
“Are you sure because you know, or because you dislike the accusation?”
Satoru went very still.
Daigo whispered “Oh no”
Tomonari whispered “Correct”
Akiha whispered “Quiet”
Satoru’s cursed energy did not flare.
That was the frightening part.
His face lost the playful shape and became something younger and older at once.
“I made the vow”
“Yes”
“I did not tell them”
“Yes”
“I am asking you”
“Yes”
“And you still think I might be trying to own it?”
Rei wanted to soften the answer.
That meant he should not.
“Yes”
Satoru stared at him.
For a second, Rei saw anger.
Real anger.
Not theatrical.
Not bored.
Hurt enough to become sharp.
Then the Six Eyes heir smiled without humor.
“You are mean carefully”
“I am answering carefully”
“No. You are hitting the place that matters and pretending that makes it cleaner”
Rei flinched.
Good hit.
Satoru saw that too.
Good.
Bad.
Good.
Rei breathed.
“You are right”
Satoru blinked.
Apparently he had not expected that.
Rei continued “I am afraid that if you want to know cleanly enough, you will think wanting is different from taking”
Satoru said nothing.
Rei looked down at his bandaged palm.
“I am also afraid that if you stop wanting to know, I will feel like what you saw was not real”
The second sentence came out before he could stop it.
The courtyard changed.
Akiha went still in the corridor.
Haruto’s attention became painful.
Sayuri closed her eyes.
Satoru stared.
Rei wished he could remove the sentence from the air.
He could not.
That was the thing about plain words. They survived long enough to punish the person who wrote them.
Satoru said “That is stupid”
Rei almost laughed.
It would have been easier.
“Yes”
“No. I mean it is stupid because I cannot forget”
The vow did not pull.
The sentence was safe.
The sentence was devastating.
Satoru looked annoyed by his own honesty.
“I saw you. Not all. Not the answer. But I saw enough that forgetting would be more work than remembering”
Rei’s throat tightened.
Satoru leaned forward slightly.
“So stop acting like my curiosity is the thing keeping it real”
The words hit harder because they were right.
Rei bowed his head.
Not formally.
Just enough to survive the moment.
“Yes”
Satoru clicked his tongue.
“That was too obedient”
Rei looked up.
“I am injured”
“That excuse is getting old”
“It has been less than a week”
“I get bored fast”
Daigo whispered “He really does”
Satoru pointed toward the corridor without looking.
“Loud Zenin agrees”
Daigo said “Do not call me that”
Satoru smiled.
“Paper keeper”
Daigo made a strangled sound.
Rei looked at him.
“You told him?”
Daigo pointed at Rei.
“You told him”
“I told him you were keeping the paper”
“You made it sound important”
Satoru said “It is important”
Daigo froze.
Satoru looked toward the corridor.
“Stupid paper is usually important. Adults hate that”
Daigo’s face went through several stages of rejection.
Tomonari looked fascinated.
Akiha did not laugh, but her eyes softened.
Satoru returned to Rei.
“You should listen to the paper”
“I do”
“No. You listen to it when it catches you. You should listen before”
Rei stared at him.
“That is dangerously reasonable”
“I know. I hate it”
Moriyama spoke from near the gate.
“Gojo. If you continue being useful, I will require documentation”
Satoru looked horrified.
“I take it back”
Oda said “Too late. It has been witnessed”
Rei felt the laugh this time.
It came easier.
Still small.
Still painful.
But less like the room might break if it heard.
Satoru waited until it passed.
Then his voice lowered again.
“I have one more question”
Rei looked at him.
“Ask”
The word came before fear.
Maybe that was progress.
Maybe stupidity.
Satoru noticed.
Of course.
“What are you afraid I will do if I know more?”
Rei did not answer.
The question was simple.
The answer was not.
He could say tell someone. But the vow covered that.
He could say look harder. But Satoru already did.
He could say use it. But Satoru had chosen not to, at least once.
The real answer stood behind all of those.
“You might decide what it means before I do”
Satoru’s expression changed.
Not dramatically.
Enough.
Rei continued “Adults do that. Records do that. Families do that. They see one part and make a name for the whole. If you know more, you might be better at naming it than they are”
Satoru said nothing.
“That may be worse”
The courtyard stilled.
Satoru pushed his glasses up with one finger.
A defense.
Maybe.
“You think I would name you wrong”
“I think you could name me powerfully”
That landed.
Satoru looked away.
For once, he looked his age.
Not small.
But young.
The difference mattered.
When he looked back, the grin was gone.
“I will not name you”
Rei’s breath caught.
Satoru scowled.
“Do not make that face. I am not making another vow”
“I know”
“Good”
A pause.
Then Satoru added “I can call you weird, though”
Rei stared.
Satoru smiled.
“That is not naming. That is accuracy”
Rei closed his eyes.
“You are very difficult to respect”
“You are doing great”
“I am not”
“No. But you are trying. That is funny”
Rei opened his eyes.
The courtyard had changed again.
Not safe.
Never safe.
But the edge of the conversation had moved.
Satoru did not know the secret.
He wanted to.
He had not stopped wanting.
But now he had heard what the wanting could become.
Rei had heard what the vow cost.
Neither had fixed the problem.
That, perhaps, was the first useful thing about the conversation.
They had not fixed it and still remained there.
Satoru stepped back.
“I have decided something”
Rei immediately distrusted that.
“No”
“You have not heard it”
“I have evidence”
Satoru ignored him.
“If I ask wrong, you can say teeth”
Rei stared.
“What?”
“Secret with teeth. If I ask like an idiot, say teeth”
“No”
Satoru looked offended.
“Why?”
“Because then the boundary becomes a game you helped name”
Satoru paused.
Then groaned.
“You are right and I hate it”
Akiha whispered from the corridor “Good refusal”
Daigo whispered “Paper would approve”
Tomonari whispered “Paper has no agency”
Daigo whispered “You do not know that”
Rei ignored them with effort.
Satoru rubbed the back of his head.
“Fine. No code”
“No code”
“No second vow”
“No second vow”
“No adult thank you”
“No adult thank you”
Satoru nodded.
“Terrible conversation. Productive”
Moriyama said “If you put that in a report, I will retire”
Oda said “No you will not”
Moriyama said “Do not correct my fantasies”
Satoru looked delighted.
“Kyoto is better than Tokyo”
The attendant made a faint sound of despair.
Sayuri said from the edge of the courtyard “Do not let the buildings hear. They will become proud”
Satoru turned to her.
“I still hate your family”
Sayuri smiled.
“You remain unconvincing”
Rei looked at Satoru.
The boy who had seen him.
The boy who could not say what he had seen.
The boy who still wanted to know and had, for one conversation, allowed that wanting to be challenged without turning it into a weapon.
“I have one question too” Rei said
Satoru’s smile sharpened.
“Finally”
“If adults ask you about the vow again, will you tell me?”
Satoru blinked.
Then looked toward the corridor.
Daigo’s paper.
Third line.
Fifth line.
Adult questions.
His grin changed.
“You made rules”
“The cohort did”
“You are included?”
“I am trying to be”
Satoru looked at him for a moment.
Then said “Yes”
Rei waited.
Satoru rolled his eyes.
“I will tell you if they ask about the vow or about what I saw. If I can tell you without breaking it”
Rei nodded.
“Thank you”
Satoru immediately pointed at him.
“Too adult”
Rei sighed.
“You are helping”
“Worse”
“You are being difficult usefully”
Satoru considered.
“Acceptable”
Daigo shouted from the corridor “That was awful”
Akiha said “It was accurate”
Tomonari said “It was socially survivable”
Daigo said “All of you need help”
Oda looked up.
“No one here qualifies”
The attendant looked like he agreed but feared the paperwork.
The session ended because Moriyama declared that any further mutual clarification would reduce intelligence in the surrounding area.
Satoru left first.
At the gate, he stopped and looked back.
Not at Rei’s bandaged hand.
Not at the adults.
At Rei.
“You still look terrible”
Rei said “You still observe terribly”
Satoru smiled.
“Better”
Then he left.
The courtyard felt larger after he was gone.
Not emptier.
Larger.
As if the space he occupied had been folded badly and now the air had to decide how to lie flat again.
Akiha entered the courtyard first.
Daigo and Tomonari followed.
Daigo still had the paper in his sleeve.
Rei looked at it.
Daigo noticed.
“What?”
“Nothing”
Daigo narrowed his eyes.
“Quieting answer?”
Rei paused.
Akiha’s gaze sharpened.
Tomonari waited.
Rei corrected himself.
“I was thinking that the paper helped”
Daigo looked down at his sleeve.
Then away.
“Obviously”
Akiha asked “Did he push?”
“Yes”
“Did you push back?”
“Yes”
“Did you give him a quieting answer?”
Rei thought about it.
Really thought.
“Once, almost. Then not”
Akiha nodded.
Daigo said “Paper approves”
Tomonari opened his mouth.
Daigo pointed at him.
“Do not”
Tomonari closed it.
Moriyama passed them on the way inside.
“Paper is not sentient”
Daigo said “You do not know that”
Moriyama stopped.
Looked at him.
Then at Rei.
Then at Akiha.
Then at Tomonari.
“I am underpaid”
Oda’s voice came from behind her.
“You are not paid for this part”
“Exactly”
Rei laughed.
This time, his hand hurt and it was still worth it.
That night, the System opened while he was rewrapping the bandage.
[Witness Bound by Vow interaction completed]
Subject:
Satoru Gojo
Observed:
- subject acknowledges vow cost
- subject tested vow boundary independently
- subject maintains curiosity
- subject accepted refusal without severing contact
- subject agreed to notify host of adult inquiry where possible
Risk:
high
Disclosure status:
protected under existing vow
Relational classification update:
Witness Bound by Vow remains active.
Physical Trust Thread stabilized.
Rei read the update without feeling relieved.
That was probably good.
A second message appeared.
[Boundary note]
Satoru Gojo's curiosity remains active.
Curiosity is not hostility.
Curiosity is not safety.
Host successfully distinguished:
- refusal
- quieting answer
- partial answer
- ownership risk
A third message blinked into place.
[No reward issued]
Current growth is relational, not extractive.
Continue surviving consequence.
Rei stared at it.
Then, despite himself, laughed once.
The System had developed a sense of timing.
Terrible.
He opened his notebook with his uninjured hand.
Writing was still awkward, but less so than the day before.
Satoru asked:
What part of you did I see?
I did not answer.
He asked:
What did it cost you?
I answered partially.
I asked:
What did the vow cost you?
He said he hated me for half a breath.
This was probably honest.
This mattered.
He paused.
Then wrote:
He said the secret still has teeth.
He is right.
I was treating the vow as if it made what he saw quiet.
It did not.
It made disclosure quiet.
The seen thing remains alive.
The brush hovered.
He thought of Akiha in the corridor.
Daigo holding the paper.
Tomonari translating danger into usable language.
Haruto warning him that a vow was structure, not trust.
Sayuri saying sight was not ownership.
Satoru saying he would not name him.
Rei wrote one last line.
Maybe being seen safely is not being understood.
Maybe it is being allowed to remain unnamed.
He did not stamp the page.
The words were plain.
But not finished.
Not yet.
