Apocalypse Conquest: Isekaied With The Harem System

Chapter 26: The Outer Wards Pacified

The Outer Wards reeked of smoke, decay, and despair.

Kael stepped through the breach in the inner wall, his boots crunching on broken stone. The buildings here were crumbling husks. Lines of emaciated men and women, wearing iron shackles, shuffled under the crack of whips, hauling rubble or pushing overloaded carts. Guards in mismatched leather and rusted plate patrolled, their expressions hard and indifferent.

His expression didn't change. His eyes swept the district, marking patrol routes, slave pens, guard towers.

"Lyra, take the main road. Elara, the rooftops are yours. Cecilia and Vanya, be ready if they counterattack. Twins, stay with Lyra. Let's finish this."

Lyra moved first. A blur of silver and blue, her ice sword gleamed in the dull light. She hit the first patrol like a glacial avalanche. The first guard barely managed to raise his sword; Lyra's blade sheared through it and his collarbone in one smooth motion. The second died with a spear of ice through his chest. The third turned to run and found his legs frozen to the cobblestones before her sword ended the fight in a single strike.

From the shadows between buildings, darkness stirred. Two archers on a rooftop crumpled, clutching at precise strikes to the neck before they could nock their arrows. A third screamed as a shadow tendril yanked him off the edge to slam onto the street below. Elara materialized beside his fallen body, her violet eyes gleaming with feral joy before she vanished again.

Aurelia's voice rang out, calm and sharp. "Seraphina, blind the group reinforcing from the left. Lyra, pivot on my mark."

A pulse of searing white light erupted from Seraphina's hands, washing over a squad of six guards who rounded a corner. They cried out, dropping their weapons and clutching their eyes. Lyra was already among them, a whirlwind of precise, lethal strikes.

Kael walked through the chaos. A guard, driven mad by fear, charged him with a roar. Kael didn't break stride. He sidestepped the wild spear thrust, caught the man's wrist, and twisted. The snap of bone was loud. A backhand sent the guard slamming into a crumbling wall, where he slid down, unconscious. His aura pressed down on the ward, breaking the last of the slavers' resolve. Many threw down their weapons and fled.

---

The heart of the Outer Wards was a broad, filthy square. On a raised wooden platform stood the source of the corruption.

Silas the Butcher was a mountain of scarred muscle, clad in spiked plate stolen from a dozen victims. A massive, notched axe rested on his shoulder. In his other hand, he held a whip crusted with blood and flesh. His face was a mask of brutish fury.

"You think you can take my kingdom?" he bellowed. "Kill them all! Leave none of them standing!"

His remaining forces, perhaps fifty hardened brutes, surged forward.

The harem met them with Synergy.

Lyra slammed her palm to the ground. "Glacial Domain!" A wall of jagged ice erupted, splitting the charging mob. Elara flowed through the openings, her daggers becoming a dance of black light. Cecilia raised her hands, and a wave of Holy Fire engulfed a cluster of slavers screaming with corrupted sigils branded on their skin. Vanya's fingers wove complex patterns; arcane threads of violet energy lashed out, binding a dozen men together, leaving them helpless for Lyra's finishing strike.

Aurelia and Seraphina fought back-to-back. Seraphina's blasts of light disoriented and broke shields, while Aurelia's arrows found eye-slits and gaps in armor. They were proving their worth, seamlessly integrating into the combat rhythm.

Kael advanced through the battlefield, untouched. His gaze was locked on Silas.

The Butcher roared and leaped from the platform, his axe swinging in a devastating arc meant to cleave Kael in two. Kael moved. Not with flashy speed, but with impossible efficiency. He leaned back, the axehead whistling past his chest. As Silas stumbled from the force of his own missed blow, Kael stepped in.

His fist slammed into Silas's armored abdomen. The spiked plate dented inward with a metallic shriek. Silas gagged, air exploding from his lungs. Kael grabbed the wrist of the axe-hand, twisted, and broke the wrist. The axe thudded to the ground.

Silas swung his other fist. Kael caught it, his fingers closing like a vice. He stared into the warlord's pain-widened eyes.

"You had power." Kael's voice was cold. "You chose cruelty. Now you have nothing."

His dominance aura focused, crushing the last of his confidence in Silas's spirit. The Butcher's eyes went blank with terror. Kael's other hand shot out, seizing the man's thick neck. One swift motion. Silas collapsed.

Silas the Butcher collapsed, a heap of meat and metal at Kael's feet.

---

The battle died with him. The last of the slavers were brought down or surrendered. An eerie silence fell over the square, broken only by the clinking of chains from the thousands of enslaved workers watching from pens and streets.

Kael turned to them. His voice carried, calm and commanding, to every corner.

"Look at him. Your master is dead. You're no longer slaves."

He let the words hang, seeing the disbelief, the fragile hope.

"You're citizens of this city. This city . You will work. But you'll be paid. You'll be fed. You'll be protected. Your labor will rebuild these wards into something that doesn't collapse on your heads. You'll have purpose. You'll have law. My law."

He saw the shift. The fear didn't vanish, but it was joined by something else. A cautious, desperate yearning.

From a heavy iron cage near the platform, the lock shattered by a stray spike of Lyra's ice, a figure emerged.

She was tall, her posture straight despite visible injuries. Her armor, once fine, was battered and stained. A long, ragged scar ran from her temple to her jaw. Her hair was dark crimson, and her eyes were fierce amber. She moved with the grounded grace of a veteran warrior.

She walked to where Kael stood over Silas's corpse, and without hesitation, went to one knee. Her voice was hoarse but steady.

"I'm Dame Valeria. Former Knight Commander of the Third Royal Legion. He held me for six months, trying to force information from me for the location of the Legion's vault." She looked up at Kael, her gaze unwavering. "You defeated him in minutes. You have the strength I swore to serve. You brought justice back to this city. If you'll accept me, my sword and my loyalty are yours."

Kael looked down at her. He saw the unbroken will beneath the scars, the strength that had endured Silas's torture.

"I accept your service, Dame Valeria. Rise. Your first duty is to help me bring order to what you see here."

As the newly freed citizens began to tentatively leave their pens, guided by Cecilia's light and Aurelia's clear instructions, Kael led his harem and his new vassal to the outer wall. They climbed to the top, looking out over the sprawling, freed wards.

The sun was rising, its first rays cutting through the perpetual haze of smoke and dust, painting the shattered city in tones of gold and crimson. It wasn't a clean victory. It was hard, brutal, bought with blood. But it was a victory.

Lyra stood at his right shoulder, Elara at his left. Cecilia and Vanya flanked them, with the twins and Dame Valeria just behind. They no longer looked upon ruins. They looked upon the first foundation of the empire they would build together.

The long night of the Outer Wards was over.
