The System Gave Everyone Superpowers

Chapter 44: Hero Time

I watched as Genevieve fidgeted with the door, desperately trying to break out.

“You're wasting your time,” I said, walking over to her. “These doors can’t be broken by normal means.”

Genevieve looked at me, her eyes wild. “Then how do we get out of here!”

“By using our powers.” I said bluntly. “Step out the way.”

Genevieve stepped to the side, leaving me with the door. Burn. I activated my skill and the handle instantly turned to mush. The door was open.

“You guys stay in here.” I said, putting on my Seasons smile. “Leave Jungle to me.”

I activated Wings and flew down to the action. As I flew, I spotted Koda and Leo breaking out of their boxes as well.

When I reached the danger zone, a couple of Jungle members spotted me and launched projectiles. I burned them both with ease.

Another cluster came forward and used their Blessings to try and get me out of the air. I froze their hands together.

Leo and Zachary finally arrived at the frontlines and formed an impromptu frontline to defend the fleeing civilians. Koda however, remained up top with the VIP’s.

I looked around and saw my parents taking down Jungle members while protecting my sister. The other parents were hiding behind them, taking cover in the stands.

Jungle, regardless of how powerful they were, posed no threat for two top 200 ranked Heroes.

I flew back up to the Aegis box, meeting Geneieve at the door.

Geneieve was pacing back and forth. “We have no idea how to destroy the barrier and the man who cast it is gone.”

I walked over to the side of the broken window and used Wings to hover just outside the frame. “That won’t be a problem.”

The broken window became my sniper nest. I used highly concentrated, invisible drafts of superheated air to quietly melt the weapons and ankles of Jungle members. Once enough of them fall, the top brass will have to reveal themselves once more.

I made sure to also keep an eye on Koda who, outside of Leo and Zach, was the only Hero who had managed to get out the box.

Hours passed and Jungle’s numbers finally dwindled. By the time the Jungle enforcers came back out, there were only 15 members left. The rest were incapacitated or dead.

Leo and Zachary had been fighting nonstop. They were battered and exhausted. My parents had cleared their area and were now defending Chloe’s body. Marlon Shaw and the students were under their care.

Koda was still by the Dawn box. He had not made a single move the entire attack. Outside of smiling and looking around, he was completely idle.

Finally, the two enforcers came back out. The giant and wolf man. They made a couple of signals and proceeded to exit the premises. The wolf man took the barrier back down while the giant lifted up the gates. The cameras were already outside.

I saw this and understood exactly what I had to do. Steal the spotlight. I flew out the box once more and right as the gates reached the top launched a giant ice attack in the middle of the arena.

Everyone turned and saw me high in the air, smiling. The wolfman turned. However, he did not waste time targeting me and kept moving with the giant. They exited with the remaining Jungle members.

I did not go after them. There was no need to. I had accomplished my goal. The camera's first shot was me launching a giant attack at the enemy. That would be all anybody would be talking about for the coming weeks.

Jungle managed to get away while the police and military came in from the sky.

“Finally!” Mr. Graves yelled. “Guys, let’s go.”

I followed Mr. Graves and Captain May up to the helipad. Before I left, I shot a glance at my parents. Then, at Koda who was smiling even bigger than before and finally at Leo and Zach who were completely worn out.

Today was a good day.

I got into the helicopter next to Genevieve and before I knew it we were off.

I woke up the next morning to a media storm. My flashy ice attack was played on a loop on every news channel. The entire country was talking about how the rising hero Seasons bravely fought against the dangerous gang of villains known as Jungle.

More time was allocated to me than the tournament itself.

This was my first time making national news. The Black Hole attack while prominent did not receive the airtime this was getting.

Immediately, a text came through. It was from Captain May.

Great work yesterday, Shay. I am transferring a hundred-thousand-dollar hazard bonus to your account. Your popularity is nearing the stratosphere. You will be a household name in no time.

I replied quickly. Excited for the future!

After hitting send, I put my phone down and walked to my window. Things were moving smoothly.

An hour passed before I got another text. This time however it was from my mom.

Le Petit Bijou. 7 PM.

This was a complete shock for me. The last time either of my parents texted me was five years ago. Since then, Sarah had been our intermediary. For one of them to text me directly could only mean one thing.

They wanna talk about last night.

For the first time in a long time I got anxious. Many questions were going through my head. Are they going to try and reprimand me?Do they want to question me about my newfound status? Is there a hidden clause in the emancipation papers that I forgot to read?

To calm myself, I turned my game on and started playing. I did this until 6:30 rolled around.

When it was time, I called the Aegis corporate vehicle and had them drive me to Le Petit Bijou. I arrived a little bit before 7 and quickly made it to the front desk where I was politely escorted to a private table.

The restaurant was empty.

My mom was waiting for me at the table. I took a seat out and got comfortable.

The table was silent.

I sat there looking around, waiting for her to make the first move. After five minutes, she finally spoke.

“Chloe’s graduation is in a month.” She said, looking down at the menu. “You will need to dress formally. I hope you have a suit.”

The words that came out of my mother’s mouth left me completely lost. Is she inviting me to Chloe’s graduation? I took a moment to process what she said before opening my mouth.

“Why?” I asked. “I am a failure and a stain on the family name.”

She looked at me directly in my eyes. “Were.”

“Huh?” I said, confused.

“You were a failure.” She continued, looking back down at the menu. “Now you are not.”

The waiter finally came by and took our orders.

We sat for the rest of the dinner in silence, even after our food came. She did not mention the graduation again and I did not ask any more questions.

After our meals were done, we got up and left. A driver came for her and she got in and left. Then my driver came and drove me back to the penthouse.

I was still in shock when I entered my room. I had no desire or interest to play games or watch movies. I didn’t even feel like taking a shower. My mind was moving a thousand miles a second.

Now you are not

I went to sleep with the implications of the night heavy on my mind.
