Malediction of the Depth – Silence in Judgement

Chapter 101: A Game for One

Reality reasserted itself with a violent snap.

Lea found herself standing in the mansion's backyard, except it wasn't a backyard anymore. Or rather, it was, but impossibly vast. What should have been maybe fifty meters across had become kilometers of twisted landscape.

Overgrown hedges formed maze-like walls. Rusted playground equipment loomed like skeletal monuments. And in the distance, fog obscured whatever horrors lay beyond.

The four people from the campfire were here too, scattered across the grounds, already running.

And in Lea's mind, words formed. Not spoken or written. Just... there. Rules imposed directly into her consciousness... and a very convenient glowing purple panel in front of her.

ROLE: HUNTER

-OBJECTIVE: Strike down all Prey. Place them in Cages scattered throughout the Hunting Ground.

-WARNING: Prey can unlock Cages. If a Prey is caged three times, they will forfeit this Round.

-PREY OBJECTIVE: Work together. Find three Keys hidden throughout the Hunting Ground. Unlock one of two Gates on opposite ends.

VICTORY CONDITIONS:

- Hunter: Capture majority or all Prey = Reward

- Prey: Unlock Gate and escape

- Hunter: Fail to capture majority = Punishment

The rules burned into her mind with terrible clarity. And beneath them, her body moved.

Not her choice or her will.

The thing controlling her wanted her to hunt.

No... Lea thought desperately... I won't. I refuse to—

Her legs moved anyway, carrying her forward with Fourth Step speed toward the nearest Prey, one of the terrified ones who'd been conscious at the campfire.

He saw her coming and ran, screaming.

Lea's Cursed Constructs erupted without her command, lashing out, wrapping around his ankle. He fell hard. She was on him in seconds. Hastur pressed against his throat.

Then her body lifted him, carrying him toward one of the cages she could suddenly sense. As if the Hunting Ground itself was feeding her information.

Stop!! STOP!! I don't want this!!!

But her hands opened the cage, shoved the man inside, and locked it.

He screamed, begging, pleading.

Lea's body just walked away, already hunting the next target.

Inside her own mind, trapped behind eyes that wouldn't close, Lea felt something break. Her Malediction Path stirred, feeding on her own suffering, her own helpless rage.

Is this what I am? she thought... Is this what the curse makes me? A monster wearing my face?

Meanwhile, elsewhere in the mansion...

Solafant's true form had fully manifested.

They were a mass of voided blades - darkness given edge, nothingness shaped into cutting implements. Each blade moved independently, swirling around a central core that hurt to perceive directly.

Before them, spider legs emerged from smoke clouds throughout the vast chamber, dozens of them, each attacking from different angles.

Solafant's blades met them with precision, cutting through chitinous limbs. But for every leg severed, two more emerged.

"Authority of the Empty Throne!", Solafant's voice echoed from the void-blades, "I command—Nullify!"

The Void power swept outward, attempting to unmake the mystical nature of their opponent.

The spider legs... hesitated.

Whatever controlled this place was strong enough to resist even Sixth Step nullification.

A leg stabbed forward. Solafant's blades intercepted it, but the impact sent them reeling backward.

"What are you?", Solafant demanded as they deflected another leg.

The smoke swirled, forming something like a mouth. But just more smoke, more legs, more endless assault.

It refused to answer.

Solafant fought with desperate precision, their Void powers creating zones of nothingness that the legs couldn't cross. But it was a stalemate at best.

And they were slowly losing ground.

"Lea... Jim...", they whispered, "I hope you're surviving whatever nightmare you're in. Because I can't help you right now..."

Another leg stabbed down. Solafant's blades cut it apart.

But three more took their place.

And the smoke laughed.

Far away, in a city of pure silver beneath a starless sky...

Charlotte sat in a comfortable chair, playing a dating sim on a screen that shouldn't exist in this world. 'Hooked on You' displayed across the top, a bizarre concept, making horror villains into dating prospects.

"Fascinating, really.", she murmured, selecting dialogue options, "Humanity's capacity for finding romance in the strangest places never ceases to amuse me."

"This is why I love humans so much."

The ebony-winged angel stood nearby, watching respectfully. The city itself hummed with awareness, waiting for its Monarch's commands.

Charlotte paused the game, looking up at the starless sky.

"Star Gods.", she said conversationally, as if speaking to someone, "Or Eldritch Gods, as Earth calls them. Incomprehensible and all-powerful manifestations of Stars themselves."

She leaned back, continuing her monologue.

"To the people of this world, Star Gods can be calamities or saviors. Or just here for fun.", she selected another dialogue option, "Like this mansion situation. That's a Star God's doing, most likely, a very bored one that decided 'haunted mansion' was too mundane. Had to make it a game instead."

Charlotte progressed through the dating sim with casual expertise. Chuckling at some meta knowledge from old times.

"The mansion's Avatar is playing with its food, seeing what happens when demigods get caught in its domain.", she chuckled, "Entertaining, but ultimately futile. They'll figure it out eventually."

She paused, her smile widening slightly.

"Or they won't, and I'll have to intervene. Which would be annoying."

The angel spoke hesitantly, "Your Majesty, should we—"

"Nah~", Charlotte waved dismissively, "Let them struggle. Suffering builds character, after all. Besides, the Star God running that mansion is weak because of how far it is from its Star. If they can't handle it, they don't deserve to be demigods."

Though the angel can understand Charlotte's words, her logic is skewed to a certain extent. For a planet that operates with Violence as its main driving force, killing gods is just another fact of life.

She returned to the dating sim, selecting a particularly amusing dialogue option that made the horror villain character flustered.

"Now then...", Charlotte wondered, "I need to figure out which ending path to take. The traumatized trapper or the traumatized ghost? Decisions, decisions..."

In a universe full of infinite entertainment, sometimes the most interesting thing was watching lesser beings struggle. And sometimes, the most powerful entities in existence just wanted to play dating sims and see what happened.

The game continued.

Both Charlotte's...

And the one trapping three demigods in an impossible mansion.
