Rejected by Four Mates: Awakening of the Silver Wolf

Chapter 69 - 70: You may call me Azura....

Author’s Pov

The full moon hung heavily above Altheris Academy like a bloated, malevolent eye, enormous and unnaturally pale against the ink-black sky. Its silver light spilled across the ancient spires, stone courtyards, and dense forests, bathing everything in an ethereal yet cursed glow that made shadows stretch longer and secrets feel closer to the surface.

Everyone knew the truth: full moons never arrived quietly. They always brought something darker with them, bloodshed, madness, or outright catastrophe. And tonight, the air itself felt thick with foreboding, charged with an invisible storm waiting to break.

A cold, biting wind swept through the academy grounds, rattling the towering black trees surrounding the exclusive Arbiters’ quarters. The night felt wrong, tense in a way people couldn’t quite name, as though the darkness itself was holding its breath, anticipating violence.

Inside Irene lavish private apartment, however, warmth and careless laughter drowned out the unease lurking beyond the walls.

Golden chandeliers cast a soft, luxurious glow over the spacious room. Empty bottles of rare, expensive liquor cluttered the low table, while soft, sultry music played from a hidden crystal orb in the corner. Irene lounged lazily against a plush velvet couch, one long leg crossed elegantly over the other, a glass of deep crimson wine balanced effortlessly between her manicured fingers.

The four Sentinels from the previous night occupied the space with her, their ominous masks discarded carelessly on nearby surfaces for once. Without the masks, they looked almost human, relaxed, comfortable, and slightly flushed from drink and triumph. They were celebrating.

Irene swirled her wine slowly, watching the liquid catch the light before taking a slow, satisfied sip. A pleased, predatory smile curved her full lips.

"She really thought she had won just because I let her walk away last night," Irene said with a soft, mocking laugh, amusement dripping from every syllable like honeyed poison.

One of the Sentinels leaned back in his chair, though a faint trace of discomfort lingered on his face. "I think we might have punished her too much," he admitted quietly. "Even the beating alone was excessive for a girl without a wolf or any powers backing her."

Another Sentinel scoffed immediately. "And if we hadn’t? She could have exposed all of us. She saw too much."

A third added grimly, "We had no choice. Loose ends like her only cause problems."

Irene barely reacted, her expression remaining one of cool indifference. She lifted her glass again. "I honestly don’t care whether she survives or not," she said coldly. "Though I would prefer her alive."

The Sentinels glanced at her curiously.

A slow, dangerous smile spread across Irene’s lips. "It’s far easier to instill lasting fear into people who are still breathing."

A brief, uneasy silence settled over the room.

Then one of the Sentinels frowned slightly. "What exactly did that girl do to earn this level of hatred from you?"

Irene’s expression flickered for the briefest second, something cold and possessive flashing behind her eyes, before smoothing back into elegant composure. "She hurt something that belonged to me," she answered calmly. "So now I’m taking revenge for my baby."

The way she said it carried no warmth, no genuine maternal affection. The words sounded less like love and more like ownership. Like Nyx had dared to touch something Irene considered her property.

Another Sentinel chuckled, attempting to lighten the mood. "So when are we seeing you again, Miss Irene?"

"Not anytime soon," Irene replied sharply. "We already took a stupid risk yesterday. Getting caught by some random academy girl was embarrassing enough." She tilted her head, eyes narrowing with warning. "We cannot afford another mistake."

The others nodded in agreement and returned to their drinks, the atmosphere softening once more into relaxed indulgence.

Then suddenly....

Irene burst into laughter.

Loud. Sharp. Almost cruel.

The Sentinels looked toward her.

"You should have seen Nyx’s face," Irene laughed, wiping at the corner of her eye dramatically. "The moment Ysara mentioned Sentinels were castrated..."

Even the Sentinels laughed at that.

"I almost lost control when I saw her expression," one admitted between chuckles.

"To be fair," another Sentinel said smugly, "Sentinels actually are castrated."

His gaze slid toward Irene flirtatiously.

"But thankfully, you saved the four of us from that tragic fate."

Irene smirked faintly, clearly entertained by the attention.

The atmosphere softened again.

Relaxed and careless.

And that carelessness was exactly why none of them noticed the shift in the air until it was far too late.

BOOM.

The apartment doors exploded inward with catastrophic force.

Not pushed or forced but Exploded.

The deafening blast shook the entire room. Chandeliers swung violently overhead, crystals shattering and raining down like deadly stars. Windows cracked in jagged spiderwebs. Bottles toppled and smashed across the floor.

Everyone shot to their feet instantly, weapons half-drawn.

Irene’s eyes sharpened into deadly slits. "What the fuck...?"

Without hesitation, she moved toward the destroyed entrance with supernatural speed.

The hallway outside was empty.

Silent.

Too silent.

A cold, unnatural breeze swept through the corridor, carrying a heavy, ancient presence that made the hairs on the back of her neck rise.

Irene narrowed her eyes, fangs instinctively lengthening.

Then....

Something blurred past her.

Fast.

Very swift.

It moved like a living shadow ripped straight from the void itself, streaking past her body with lightning speed before vanishing back into the apartment.

Even Irene froze for half a second.

Impossible.....

She was a pureblood vampire over a century old. Very few beings alive could move faster than her.

But whatever had just passed her... it wasn’t normal.

Irene spun on her heel and rushed back inside.

The moment she crossed the threshold, her entire body went rigid with shock.

The apartment had become a slaughterhouse.

Thick blood coated the floors and walls in gruesome sprays. The four Sentinels lay sprawled unnaturally across the room, throats sliced so deeply and cleanly that their heads were nearly severed. Crimson soaked into the expensive furniture, pooled beneath shattered glass, and dripped from the ceiling in slow, obscene droplets.

Dead.

All four of them.

Slaughtered in less than a minute.

Irene stared in stunned silence, the metallic scent of fresh blood flooding her senses.

Even for her... this was horrifying.

No struggle. No defensive wounds. No time to react.

Just swift, clinical death.

A cold, primal sensation crept slowly up Irene’s spine for the first time in decades.

Whatever had entered this apartment had not come to scare her.

It had come to kill.

And suddenly, with chilling clarity, Irene understood.

She was next.

She backed away from the carnage immediately, instincts screaming that remaining inside that room meant certain death. Once outside in the moonlit courtyard, she stood perfectly still, every muscle coiled like a spring, every sense pushed to their absolute limit.

The moonlight felt colder now. Sharper. Almost accusatory.

Nothing moved.

No sound broke the silence.

"Who are you?" Irene demanded coldly into the darkness, voice steady despite the growing dread.

No answer.

"Come out and face me instead of hiding like a coward!"

Still nothing.

Then....

CRACK.

Agony exploded across her back with devastating force.

Her body jerked violently forward.

Before she could recover...

CRACK.

Another strike.

And another.

And another.

Pain ripped through her body in relentless waves, exactly like the military punishment rods used on Nyx, only far stronger and delivered with inhuman precision. Each impact crushed muscle and bone, sending shockwaves of torment through her ancient frame.

Irene’s eyes widened in fury and disbelief.

She moved instantly, vanishing in a blur of vampire speed....

But another strike caught her mid-motion.

CRACK.

Irene: ("_") "What....?!"

Another.

CRACK.

She couldn’t see the attacker.

Couldn’t predict the strikes.

Couldn’t even sense where they were coming from.

That had never happened before.

Irene was a pureblood vampire, ancient, powerful, impossibly fast.

Yet tonight, she was being toyed with like a helpless child.

The invisible, merciless strikes continued without pause.

Again.

Again.

Again.

Exactly twenty-seven times.

By the end, Irene dropped hard onto one knee, breathing ragged and uneven. Her body was already healing beneath her torn, bloodied clothes, but the humiliation burned far hotter than any physical pain.

Her red eyes flashed with murderous rage.

"Who the hell are you?!" she snarled into the night.

No immediate answer came.

Only slow, measured footsteps.

Elegant. Intentional. Unhurried.

A figure gradually emerged from the deepest shadows ahead.

Not fully human.

Not fully anything she recognized.

The moonlight seemed to bend and recoil around the being, as though even light itself feared touching it. A black veil concealed the lower half of its face, while a deep hood shrouded most of its features. Long, dark fabric flowed unnaturally around its form despite the lack of wind, embroidered with shimmering silver runes that moved like living constellations.

And the eyes...

Goddess above, the eyes.

They glowed faintly beneath the hood... shifting hypnotically between deep crimson and molten gold. Ancient. Emotionless. Yet overflowing with cold, calculated violence.

Irene rose to her feet despite the lingering agony, every instinct screaming at her to run.

"Who are you?" she demanded again, quieter this time, voice laced with caution.

The figure tilted its head slightly.

Its voice, when it finally spoke, was hauntingly beautiful... calm, melodic, and utterly empty of humanity.

"You may call me Azura."

The name echoed strangely through the courtyard, carrying an almost sacred weight.

Irene frowned. "Goddess Azura?" she asked warily.

A soft, chilling laugh escaped the veiled figure.

"That sounds pleasant," Azura murmured. "We can go with that."

Before Irene could react...

Azura moved.... too fast.

One second the figure stood several feet away.

The next....

A powerful hand wrapped around Irene’s throat with crushing force.

Irene’s eyes widened in shock.

Her body was lifted completely off the ground as if she weighed nothing. Her legs kicked desperately against empty air while Azura’s grip tightened slowly, deliberately, monstrous strength closing off her airway.

For the first time in a very long time...

Real fear touched Irene’s ancient heart.

Azura stared at her silently beneath the hood, those glowing, shifting eyes merciless and unreadable.

And slowly...

Irene began to suffocate.

Dark spots bloomed across her vision.

Her struggles weakened.

Then...

"Let go of her."

The sharp, commanding voice cut through the courtyard like a blade.

And for the first time in her long, cruel life, Irene had never been so relieved to hear someone else’s voice.
