Chapter 26
So in the span of about 20 minutes. Roughly the time of a CS:GO or very very very fast LoL match, they were all dead except for the boss. That pervert who had been spouting shit about using April in front of Serena to 'teach that bitch a proper lesson.'
"W-What the fuck...?" The man, an older guy in his 30s. White too. Surprisingly.
He took a step back, gun pointed at me. "S-Stay back, you fr-"
I dove to the side in a roll and pulled out a pilfered pistol, blasting his kneecap.
"GAH!" He collapsed onto the ground and looked at me, terrified. "W-Wait. I'm sorry. I don't know what you are, demon, devil, or whatever. But I'm sorry!"
I casually stood up, cleaning the gun of prints and then pulling out my ropedart.
The man's eyes widened when he saw me approaching and he said, "I'll leave the bitch alone! Her kid too! Just don't-"
"Sorry. I'm not in the mood to leave anyone alive." After saying that, I did a quick loop around the man's neck in an 'x' knot and then whipped it.
A 'snap' echoed as the force cracked his neck.
Then I casually dragged him over to a nearby tree and tossed the other part of the ropedart up, pulling it taut to look like a suicide.
Mm...
I should probably be concerned at how good I was at this.
Too many years spent watching serial killer thrillers, playing Mortal Kombat, violent video games, and caseing murders, I guess.
Still, before the cops came, I quickly got rid of all my weapons, purposefully tossed myself around the ground to get dirtied up, and then prepared to spin the story of my life.
...Which brought us back up to the present.
Namely.
Me, grounded. April and Miss Serena living with us in Auntie Yue's apartment.
And Auntie Yue insisting I strip down to my underwear so she could pat me down for injuries.
"I'm telling you, Mom. It's just a few scrapes."
Auntie Yue glared at me and said, "Don't you 'Mom' me now, you brat. Do you know how scared I was?! Now shut up and let me clean you up." She picked some cottonballs up and soaked them in rubbing alcohol before cleaning up my grazes.
And all the while, her hands were trembling. Like she still couldn't believe I was fine.
...Okay. I felt SUPER guilty about it now.
But on the other hand.
If I had told her what I was planning to do... or let her try and fight the group of guys...
...Yeah, I'd seen enough hentai to know how THAT would end.
Auntie Yue might be an amazing fighter. But I was pretty sure she wasn't a killer. She was too nice for that.
Well. 'This' Auntie Yue was.
The one I remembered from the future was broken. So she could probably murder a guy in cold blood.
But I wasn't letting this Auntie Yue ever become that.
Auntie Yue placed her hands over my cheeks, staring into my eyes. Then she said, "...You're really okay?"
I smiled and said, "I'm really okay, Auntie Yue. Promise. All I did was run around to distract the bad guys until the police came. I think some other bad guys went to fight them, but it all worked out! I'm fast, you know? Nobody could catch me!"
All truths.
Auntie Yue closed her eyes and rested her forehead against mine. "Fine. Fine. Just... Please. Please." Her voice cracked as she held me close. "Never do that again. Promise. Never."
Ah. My heart. Fuck.
Okay.
Did NOT think guilt could hurt this much.
I saw my vision blur. Waterworks coming hard and fast now...
I sniffled and nodded. "Promise." I hugged Auntie Yue tight.
Her voice hitched and she hugged me back. "...Stupid Little Fatty. Don't leave me. Never leave me."
"I won't, Mom." I said it soft and gentle.
Auntie Yue grumbled. "You only call me that when you want something. Don't you?"
"Maybe~?" I teased.
Auntie Yue leaned back. Although she still looked stressed, it seemed like she wasn't in complete sheer dread anymore.
As for April and Miss Serena...
I tilted my head to look at the two, sleeping on Auntie Yue's water bed. "I guess we're living together now, huh? Um... Does Miss Serena need the hospital?"
I didn't get a look at her injuries, and she didn't SEEM very hurt.
Well, I mean it looked painful. She was bruised all over. But it didn't look like they hit her head or anything. And she wasn't bleeding out or stuff.
Auntie Yue shook her head. "It's fine. Nothing that won't heal with rest. Plus, going to the hospital would be... troublesome." Her gaze flitted to April.
Ah.
Right.
CPS would DEFINITELY step in. And hospitals had mandatory reporters.
After the events of tonight?
...Well, it was a good thing I flagged the cops down and made it seem like a random bout of gang activity instead of anything motivated.
Right now, the story was just 'lovely mother and daughter were in the middle of abrupt gang violence.'
And with Auntie Yue stepping in to clean up the story with her acting and very convincing testimony, it should be a done deal.
No, it WAS a done deal.
I mean, I DID kill like twenty men tonight along with the boss.
Even if someone had a grudge after that, they'd literally think a devil did it.
All clear, you know?
Auntie Yue sighed and then pinched my cheek. "But you... You've got some explaining to do, Mister."
"Owowow... Moooom~"
"Don't Mom me." Auntie Yue's tone was serious. "...How did you know where April and her mom lived? And how did you know how long it would take to get there?"
Ah. Right.
I stared into her eyes. Then I just waited.
Not because I didn't want to tell her. But because it looked like she already had an answer and just wanted confirmation. So I waited for her to ask her questions first.
Auntie Yue stared back at me. Then quietly said, "...Was it not safe? Being alone by yourself while Big Sis and Brother-in-law went to work?"
Oookay.
Not the direction I thought she was taking this.
I was thinking she legitimately was going to ask if I was reincarnated or a time traveler... but I forgot that this was the 90s.
Wild wacky theories like that weren't commonsense yet. People were still critical thinkers. Somewhat.
It'd be biting the hand that fed me... specifically pinning the blame on my mom and dad.
But you know what?
...Objectively, it HAD been dangerous to leave a kid home alone to take care of himself. Especially since we lived in the rougher suburbs.
If I hadn't been as bright of a kid as I was and terrified of the outside world at the time, I DEFINITELY would have been kidnapped or hurt.
So, I'll just chalk this up to karma.
"...It was dangerous, Auntie Yue. It's always been dangerous."
Ambiguous words that answered her question without going into details. A soft voice and hesitance that befitted a kid who didn't quite comprehend the greater implications.
All hallmarks of a terrified child used to overprepping in case of emergencies since the only one he could rely on was himself.
