The Girls That Came With the Rain

Speed

Meanwhile, back at Giani's, Zed emerged from the kitchen to return to Jazz.

-Sorry to keep you waiting, he told her.

-I was starting to wonder if Giani had decided to keep you as a sous-chef permanently, she joked, sliding her car keys between her fingers. She reached out, briefly squeezing his arm to signal they were ready to move.

Zed whistled as he saw Jazz's ride, a sleek pink convertible.

Jazz chuckled, clicking the remote to make the headlights flash.

-Like what you see? She handles curves much better than a sedan does. Hop in, Zed; let's see if we can reach top speed before I have to deal with Kiku and Liv.

-I'm sure they're helping Ednin and Carla deal with Maverick and Nyx, Zed said. And Deb, he added with a sigh. That one is a handful.

Sliding into the driver's seat, Jazz gripped the steering wheel and glanced at him.

-Deb definitely sounds like she knows how to stir the pot, doesn't she? she asked with a wink, putting the car into motion as they pulled away from the restaurant.

-She’s a handful, he said.

-Handfuls are usually the most interesting kind, don't you think? she asked.

-Oh absolutely, Zed said as he placed his hand over Jazz's on the gear stick. She doesn't know how to share like you and the other girls do.

-Sharing is a virtue, Zed, but I've always preferred having things all to myself too.

-Is that so? Zed asked as he moved his hand to Jazz's thigh.

-Oh, it is absolutely so, she said, leaning slightly closer toward him. So unless you plan on taking the wheel yourself, I suggest you enjoy the ride. Are you prepared for exactly how fast I can go?

-Let's see babe, Zed said with excitement.

-That's the spirit, baby! she shouted over the roar of the engine as she hit the gas.
