Chapter 68 - 67
The entrance to the dungeon loomed like a jagged wound in the earth, breathing out cold, stale air.
Liam stood before it, the map Sylvia had provided tucked securely into his pocket.
He turned to the girls, his expression sharpening with protective resolve.
"This is the place," Liam said, his voice echoing slightly against the stone walls. "Stay close to me. Keep your guard up."
They moved inward, the sound of their boots crunching against the damp, uneven ground.
Almost immediately, Liam realized the environment was actively working against them.
The dungeon was unnaturally, aggressively bright—luminescent moss lined the ceiling, casting a harsh, cold light that left them with nowhere to hide.
Every shadow was stripped away, making them easy targets.
As they reached a central hub, the path split into two tunnels.
Liam studied the layout for a heartbeat before pointing to the right.
"Inside. Move."
The moment they crossed the threshold, the stone door slammed shut behind them with a definitive thud.
From the center of the room, a grotesque shape coalesced—a hulking, goat-like monstrosity with curved, obsidian horns and spindly, elongated legs.
It screeched, a sound like grinding metal, and charged.
The fight was swift.
Liam and the girls moved with practiced efficiency, their combined attacks dismantling the creature before it could land a single blow.
But as the monster dissolved into dust, the door remained sealed.
Liam frowned, his hand hovering over his hilt.
"That shouldn’t be—"
A wet, dripping sound drew his eyes upward.
A viscous black liquid began to seep from the ceiling, pooling and twisting in the air until it hardened into a dark, humanoid figure.
Liam’s breath hitched as he focused his perception on it.
Level: ???
’We have to put it down. Now.’
The monster lashed out, a black tentacle whipping across the room, splitting the air with a violent crack.
Liam lunged forward, raising his guard to block the strike, the impact shuddering through his entire frame.
"Beatrix, now!" Liam shouted.
She didn’t hesitate.
A burst of brilliant, scorching flame erupted from her palms, bathing the dark creature.
It recoiled, the liquid flesh hissing and bubbling under the heat.
Liam saw the opening.
"Keep the pressure on! Keep it occupied—I’ll create the openings!"
They danced around the monster, constantly shifting positions, turning the creature’s own chaotic movements against it until it finally collapsed into a lifeless puddle.
Liam wiped sweat from his brow, his heart racing.
"This wasn’t what Sylvia described," he muttered, his mind churning.
The dungeon was evolving, becoming more hostile.
But as he looked at his trembling hands, a cold determination solidified in his chest.
’If this is the cost of strength, then so be it. We keep moving. It’s our only chance.’
They pushed deeper.
In the second room, the challenge doubled; two of the black humanoids waited, their movements coordinated and predatory.
They barely scraped by, but as the exhaustion set in, Liam noticed something—their reflexes were sharpening, their power output climbing.
By the third room, the monsters had developed elemental affinities.
Lightning crackled from their fingertips, and gusts of pressurized air cut into the walls.
Liam was the primary target, the monsters fixated on him with a chilling intelligence.
He realized with a sinking feeling that he was hopelessly exposed—he lacked any specialized elemental defense.
He was fighting with brute force and instinct alone, and it wouldn’t be enough to survive for long.
Finally, they reached the deepest chamber.
They stood before a massive, pulsating door, gasping for air.
"Rest. Now," Liam commanded, sinking to the floor.
The girls collapsed beside him, but the moment their guards dropped, the floor beneath them dissolved into a complex magical circle.
Before anyone could scream, the world twisted, and they were ripped from the room.
They reappeared in a vast, subterranean cavern dominated by a colossal, ancient tree.
A waterfall cascaded from its roots, glowing with a soft, ethereal light.
But at the center of the hall, perched upon a throne of rock, was a Black Phoenix.
It was wreathed in the same dark, suffocating energy that had haunted Liam’s nightmares.
He scanned it, and his blood turned to ice.
Level: 155
The phoenix let out a deafening cry, its massive wings spreading wide to unleash a vortex of black energy that swept through the hall.
"Hang on!" Liam roared, drawing his sword. "This is going to be the fight of our lives!"
The phoenix launched itself into the air, moving so fast it broke the sound barrier, a streak of black fire heading straight for them.
Liam raised his blade to intercept, but the sheer force shattered his sword into shards.
The impact caught him square in the chest, sending him careening across the hall until he slammed into the cavern wall.
He crumpled to the floor, gasping as his health bar plummeted.
The girls reacted instantly, splitting up to harass the beast from different angles.
It was a distraction—a desperate one—but it gave Liam the split second he needed to shove himself up from the rubble.
’Distraction isn’t enough,’ Liam thought, clutching his side.
He watched the phoenix wheel through the air, its dark energy pulsing.
He remembered the faint sensation of the dark thread he’d manipulated before.
He reached out with his mind, trying to visualize the connection.
He sat cross-legged amidst the chaos, focusing, trying to weave the energy into a weapon.
He fired a thin, tenuous strand toward the phoenix, but the creature swerved, glaring at Liam with eyes that seemed to mock his pathetic attempt.
’It knows what I’m doing,’ Liam cursed. ’I need to ground it.’
His eyes darted to the environment—the tree, the waterfall.
An idea sparked.
He grabbed a stone and hurled it at the phoenix, shouting a taunt that echoed through the cavern.
The bird turned, screeching in fury, and dived.
Liam sprinted, leading the phoenix toward the waterfall.
As the beast roared, the spray of water dampened its chaotic fire.
Liam dove into the base of the massive tree, a cavity large enough for the creature to follow.
The phoenix surged inside, but the tight, restrictive roots caught its wings.
It was trapped.
Liam didn’t waste the second.
He unleashed the dark thread, weaving it with everything he had.
Ding!
Skill Created: Threads of Drainage [Rank: Rare]
Power, raw and chaotic, surged through Liam.
He didn’t just drain the beast; he stole its very life force.
As he fought, his own strength swelled, closing the gap just enough to stay alive.
The phoenix thrashed, sensing the theft, and finally broke free from the tree’s grip.
It soared to the vaulted ceiling, glaring down at him.
It rose to the sky, a final, terrifying roar shaking the cavern.
Alert: The boss is activating special skill: Meteor Strike.
The ceiling vanished, replaced by a rain of fire.
Meteors the size of boulders began to hammer the ground, each impact carrying the force of the phoenix’s lethal desperation.
"Run! To the tree base!" Liam screamed, shoving the girls toward the shelter of the roots.
They huddled inside as the world exploded around them.
Liam looked up, horror gripping him as he realized the tree itself was catching fire.
A massive chunk of burning debris crashed down, sealing the exit.
He looked at the girls, their faces pale with terror.
Liam activated Devil Obsession, forcing his own body to become a living shield.
He braced his shoulders against the falling debris, his muscles screaming as the weight of the burning wood pressed down on him.
The girls clung to his neck, tears streaking their faces, as he held the ceiling up, his health bar teetering on the edge of destruction.
Minutes felt like hours.
Finally, the tremor stopped.
The fiery rain ceased.
Liam collapsed, the weight of the debris crushing him into the dirt as his strength finally gave out.
The girls were at his side in an instant, a healing potion pressed to his lips.
He swallowed the bitter liquid, feeling the warmth of life slowly return to his limbs.
He managed a weak, tired smile, looking up at the smoke-filled cavern.
"We’re still here."
He took a ragged breath.
"Let’s make our way back to Sylvia."
