Chapter 63
The sky above the academy didn’t just darken; it shattered.
High above the spires, the shimmering, translucent barrier, the only thing standing between the students and the encroaching void, cracked like a dropped mirror. With a sound that vibrated in Liam’s very marrow, the dome disintegrated into jagged shards of light before fading into nothingness.
’Finally,’ Liam thought, his jaw tightening. ’The moment of chaos. If there’s an opening, this is it.’
He didn’t hesitate. Monsters, grotesque and starving, poured through the breach, a tide of claws and teeth descending upon the academy grounds. Liam sprinted. He didn’t run toward the safety of the shelters; he ran toward the heart of the storm: the Director’s office.
He burst through the heavy mahogany doors, lungs burning. Emilia was there. She looked like a soldier who had been at the front for weeks without sleep. An eye patch covered her left eye, and her staff, usually a symbol of pristine authority, was marred by a spiderweb of deep cracks. She didn’t even look up until he slammed his hand on her desk.
"The barrier is down, Director," Liam rasped, his voice cutting through the heavy tension of the room.
Emilia’s head snapped up. She didn’t waste a second on shock; she launched herself from her chair, her movements fluid despite the visible tremor in her hands.
"I need your help," she said, bypassing pleasantries. Her voice was taut, laced with the command of someone who had already accepted the possibility of death. "The girls and I, we have to repel the vanguard. We can talk later. Can you fight?"
Liam nodded, his grip tightening. ’I can do more than that.’ "I have two scrolls. Sylvia’s ’World Ender’ class attack. I saved them."
Emilia’s eyes widened, a flicker of genuine hope cutting through her exhaustion. "That could turn the tide. If we group them up..."
"Use the stadium," Pyra, who had followed closely behind, suggested. "It’s large enough to act as a funnel. We can hit them from above."
"Do it," Liam said, his eyes hard.
They raced to the stadium. Emilia stood at the edge, her staff glowing with a haunting, pale luminescence. She struck the stone floor, and a sphere of white, blinding light shot into the center of the arena. It pulsated, a gravitational pull for the mindless creatures below. They swarmed, thousands of them, drawn to the light like moths to a flame.
Liam waited. He watched the mass of monsters swell, teeth gnashing, unaware of the doom gathering above them. He didn’t wait for a signal. He unrolled the first scroll, channeling his energy into the ancient parchment.
The sky tore open with a barrage of elemental fury. The stadium became a graveyard. He didn’t pause for breath; he triggered the second scroll immediately, turning the surviving horde into dust.
Silence fell, sudden and terrifying.
"We cleared them," Liam breathed, wiping sweat from his brow.
"Don’t lower your guard," Emilia hissed, her grip on her staff white-knuckled.
As if summoned by her warning, the ground beneath the stadium bleachers exploded outward. A monster, towering and thick with chitinous armor, a level 70 elite, tore through the walls. It didn’t roar; it simply moved, a blur of predatory speed. It struck Liam before he could even raise his sword, the force of the blow sending him skidding across the concrete, his shoulder tearing under the impact.
He hit the wall, breath leaving him in a jagged gasp. He looked down; his shoulder was a mess, but his hand was still functional.
The monster lunged again, a clawed fist descending to crush his skull. Liam blocked with his off-hand, the bone groaning in protest. He dropped to his knees, blood slicking his vision. He cursed, his mind racing. *’I was too careless. I’m going to die here if I don’t stop thinking and start acting.’*
He activated *Devil of Obsession*. The skill surged through him, ignoring the agony in his shoulder and replacing it with cold, singular focus.
"Stay back!" he barked when Emilia made to intervene. "Leave this to me."
The dance was brutal. Every movement was a test of endurance, every parry a negotiation with death. He fought with a desperate, sloppy ferocity, pushing the beast back inch by agonizing inch until, finally, he severed its spine. He collapsed to his knees, gasping, staring at the corpse.
’The intelligence,’ he realized, his heart hammering against his ribs. ’It didn’t just attack. It waited for the opening. They’re evolving.’
"We have to reach Sylvia," Liam said, his voice strained. "She has the authority to reset the system."
Emilia looked at him, her expression grim. "I’m afraid that’s going to be impossible."
"Why?"
"She’s trapped in the city center. She’s holding back a horde led by Simon. If the City Hall falls, the barrier systems will crash permanently. We can’t reboot them once they’re destroyed."
Liam felt the weight of the world settle on his chest. "We need to get these scrolls to her. We need a way to communicate."
"I have a link," Emilia said. She grabbed his arm, pulling him toward her office.
Inside, she produced a hand mirror. She pressed her finger to the glass, and it shimmered, revealing a face caked in soot and sweat. Sylvia. Behind her, the sounds of explosions echoed, continuous and deafening.
"Emilia?" Sylvia’s voice was hoarse, ragged with exhaustion. "You know I’m... *BOOM* ...in a tight spot here. What do you need?"
"The kids have the ancient items," Emilia shouted over the noise. "We can activate the barriers!"
Sylvia’s eyes squinted through the smoke, and a soft, genuine smile touched her lips. "Get to City Hall. I’ll protect the approach. Escort them, Emilia."
The flight to City Hall felt like a nightmare. As they neared the massive structure, Emilia’s eyes narrowed until they were mere slits. Suddenly, she threw up a barrier, blocking a massive energy blast that would have vaporized them.
"My wounds," she gasped, blood blooming on her side. "The seal... it’s breaking."
Liam looked toward the City Hall entrance. A figure stood there, Sylvia. But as she walked, the image flickered like a dying candle. The height increased, the shoulders broadened, the grace vanished. It was Simon.
"You fell for it," Simon chuckled, his voice dripping with malice. He stood amidst the carnage, looking entirely too relaxed. "I don’t know what to say, boy. Only to thank you for bringing the items right to my door."
Liam’s teeth ground together. "Can we run?" he whispered, his mind racing.
Emilia’s face was deathly pale. "Blocking that attack cost me everything I had left. We can’t outrun him."
"What happened to her?" Emilia demanded, shouting at Simon.
Simon gestured lazily toward the City Hall barrier. "She’s busy. She’s literally pumping her own magical core into the city’s defense. Honestly, it’s an impressive feat. I’m not sure even I could pull it off."
Liam shifted his stance, his voice barely a murmur, telepathically linking to Emilia. *’I need a teleportation spell. Can you do it?’*
*’For a high-end spell that can bypass him? It will take time to cast,’* Emilia replied, her eyes widening as she understood his plan.
*’Buy me time,’* Liam sent. He stepped forward, putting on a mask of arrogance. "You want the scrolls, Simon? I can give them to you. But I have one condition."
Simon laughed, a harsh, grating sound. He vanished, reappearing directly in front of Liam, his hand snapping around Liam’s throat. He lifted him, his aura flaring, crushing the very air out of Liam’s lungs.
"Condition?" Simon sneered, his face inches from Liam’s. "Last time I checked, I could crush your windpipe with a thought. You have no leverage."
Liam struggled to breathe, his face turning purple, but he forced a jagged grin. "Check me then. You won’t find them on me. They’re in my personal inventory. If I die... they get deleted."
Simon’s grip loosened slightly. He contemplated, his eyes flickering with greed. "What do you want, boy?"
"A scroll," Liam rasped. "Your strongest attack. Then, you get the item."
Simon sneered, dropping Liam to the ground. He tossed a scroll toward Liam. "Fine. Give it to me."
Liam stood, clutching the ancient item. He threw it, not at Simon, but into the air, and simultaneously launched a piercing strike at it.
Simon’s eyes widened. "You idiot!" He lunged for the item, momentarily distracted.
"Now, Emilia!" Liam screamed.
Emilia, having used the seconds of negotiation to prepare, didn’t hesitate. She grabbed Liam and the others, the air around them warping. Simon’s claw raked through empty space, tearing through the air where they had been a heartbeat before.
His roar of fury shook the very foundations of the city. "I will kill you! I will hunt you down!"
But the world was already shifting. The screaming faded, replaced by an unsettling, absolute silence.
They hit the ground, sprawling in a room bathed in darkness. Liam pushed himself up, his heart hammering against his ribs, his body screaming in protest. He looked around, trying to find his bearings, and then, his eyes widened in utter disbelief at what lay before him.
