Chapter 62: The Boy Called Xiao Li
Chapter 62
.
.
Instead of reacting with anger to Doctor Norman’s words, Shen Yu simply let out a quiet chuckle. The sound was low and unbothered, carrying a faint trace of amusement, as though the accusation held no real weight in his mind. There was no tension in his posture, no flicker of irritation crossing his expression. If anything, he seemed entirely at ease, almost entertained by the situation rather than offended by it.
Without saying anything further, he reached out and pulled the chair beside Jiang Li closer before sitting down, closing the distance between them until their shoulders brushed lightly. The movement was subtle, but deliberate, grounding, as if positioning himself there was enough to establish a quiet sense of control over the space.
Jiang Li, however, was the complete opposite.
His fingers remained tightly wrapped around Shen Yu’s sleeve, gripping the fabric as though letting go would cause everything around him to collapse. His shoulders were tense despite how still he tried to appear, and a faint tremor ran through his body, betraying the fear he was struggling to suppress. Even his breathing was uneven, shallow in a way that suggested he hadn’t fully calmed down since earlier.
Shen Yu noticed immediately.
His gaze dropped briefly to Jiang Li’s trembling hands before lifting to his face, studying him more carefully. The omega looked fragile—more fragile than he had ever seen him before. His lips were slightly parted, his eyes distant and unfocused, as though his thoughts were still tangled in something overwhelming, something he couldn’t fully process.
Shen Yu didn’t offer empty reassurance or meaningless words.
He simply stayed beside him.
Quiet, steady, and unwavering, allowing his presence alone to become something Jiang Li could hold onto.
Slowly, Jiang Li’s grip loosened—not enough to let go completely, but just enough for his breathing to ease, just enough for the tightness in his chest to lessen.
Across from them, Doctor Norman observed the interaction in silence.
At first, his attention had been casual, no different from any other routine observation, but it didn’t remain that way for long. Something about the omega drew his focus back again and again until it settled there completely, sharpening into something more deliberate.
A faint frown formed on his face.
There was something familiar about him.
It wasn’t obvious, not something he could immediately identify, but it lingered persistently in the back of his mind, like a memory just out of reach, waiting to be acknowledged. The feeling refused to fade, growing sharper the longer he looked.
Doctor Norman studied him more carefully, his gaze moving over the subtle details.
The pale complexion.
The faint trembling in his shoulders.
The way he clung to Shen Yu as though he were the only stable thing left in the world.
And then—
The memory surfaced.
It came back suddenly, leaving no room for doubt.
A hospital corridor.
Cold, bright, and filled with chaos.
The sound of hurried footsteps echoed against sterile walls, overlapping with voices raised in confusion and alarm. Nurses rushed back and forth, trying to maintain order, while security struggled to contain a situation that had already spiraled beyond control.
At the center of it all stood a woman.
She was strikingly beautiful, the kind of presence that would have drawn attention anywhere, but in that moment, her beauty was overshadowed completely by desperation. Tears streamed uncontrollably down her face, her composure shattered beyond repair as she clung to the child in her arms.
She held him tightly.
Too tightly.
As though even the slightest loosening of her grip would cause him to disappear.
"Please... please save my son! Please save Xiao Li!"
Her voice had been raw, hoarse from screaming, yet she kept repeating the same words over and over, her desperation deepening with each plea. Every time she spoke, it sounded more broken than before, as though her voice itself was beginning to fail her.
And the scent—
Winter rose.
It had filled the entire hospital.
Thick, overwhelming, and suffocating, pressing into every corner of the building without restraint. It was both beautiful and terrifying, intoxicating in a way that made it impossible to ignore.
Alphas had lost control almost instantly.
The reaction had been immediate and violent—restlessness, agitation, and an overwhelming pull toward something they couldn’t resist. Some tried to leave, others were restrained, but none of it was enough. The scent broke through every attempt at control, consuming everything in its path.
Nurses struggled.
Security failed.
The entire building descended into chaos.
But what unsettled Doctor Norman the most was not the chaos itself.
It was the fact that he had been able to perceive it.
As a beta, that should have been impossible.
He shouldn’t have been able to smell pheromones at all.
And yet—
He had.
Faintly, distorted, but undeniably present.
That alone had been enough to tell him something was wrong, something fundamentally different from anything he had ever encountered before.
He had stepped forward without hesitation, forcing himself to focus as he carefully took the boy from the woman’s arms. The child had been barely conscious, his breathing weak and uneven, his small body far too still.
Dark hair clung to his damp forehead.
Long lashes rested against pale cheeks.
And beneath his eye—
A small mole.
Doctor Norman had never forgotten it.
That single detail had remained vivid in his memory all these years, impossible to erase, lingering like something unfinished.
That day had marked the beginning of something unprecedented.
The first recorded case of a siren omega.
But before that child had the chance to grow into what he was meant to be, something had gone wrong.
It had been suppressed.
Broken.
Silenced before it could fully exist.
The memory faded slowly, but the unease remained.
Doctor Norman blinked, returning to the present, his gaze snapping back to Jiang Li with renewed sharpness.
The resemblance was no longer something he could dismiss.
It was too precise.
Too deliberate.
"Are you here for a pregnancy check-up?" he asked, his tone controlled, though something beneath it had shifted.
Shen Yu nodded without hesitation.
Doctor Norman leaned back slightly, folding his hands together. "Then why didn’t you start with the nurse?"
A faint smirk appeared on Shen Yu’s lips.
"Why should I?"
The answer came easily, without hesitation, as though the question itself held no importance.
Doctor Norman exhaled quietly, recognizing that arguing would be pointless, and chose to let it go. However, his attention did not leave Jiang Li. If anything, it sharpened further, his curiosity deepening into something more focused.
Before he could continue, a knock sounded at the door.
A nurse stepped inside, holding a clipboard.
"Doctor Norman, may I take the omega for a moment?"
Doctor Norman nodded.
Jiang Li reacted immediately.
His body stiffened, his grip tightening around Shen Yu’s sleeve as he turned toward him, the fear in his expression surfacing before he could hide it.
"I don’t want to go alone..." he said softly.
Shen Yu paused briefly, something subtle shifting in his expression, something almost unreadable.
Then he reached up and placed his hands gently on Jiang Li’s shoulders.
"It’s okay," he said quietly. "I’m right here."
But Jiang Li still hesitated.
So Shen Yu removed his coat and draped it carefully over Jiang Li’s shoulders. The fabric was still warm, carrying his scent—steady, grounding, and unmistakably his.
"There," Shen Yu murmured. "Better?"
Jiang Li stilled, his breathing gradually slowing as he leaned into the scent, instinctively seeking comfort in it.
"...Mn."
He nodded before standing.
The nurse watched them quietly before asking, "Is he your partner?"
Jiang Li froze briefly, the word settling heavily in his chest.
But it didn’t feel wrong.
But felt right.
After a short pause, he nodded, a small, shy smile forming.
"...Yes."
The nurse smiled gently before guiding him out.
When the door closed, silence filled the room once more.
Doctor Norman leaned back, his gaze shifting toward Shen Yu, more calculating now.
"Did you already know him before your manifestation?" he asked.
"...Yes," Shen Yu replied.
Doctor Norman didn’t respond immediately, but his eyes narrowed slightly as the pieces began to fall into place.
Time passed slowly.
When the door opened again, Jiang Li stepped back inside, still wrapped in the coat.
Shen Yu stood immediately.
"Are you okay?" he asked.
Jiang Li nodded, though his face remained partially hidden beneath the coat, clearly still seeking comfort in the lingering scent.
"Have you been feeling nauseous?" Doctor Norman asked, already writing.
Jiang Li nodded. "Yes... mostly when I wake up, or sometimes during sleep."
"Any pain or bleeding?"
"No."
Doctor Norman continued writing.
"Have you taken a home pregnancy test?"
"Yes."
"When was your last period?"
Shen Yu froze.
His eyes widened slightly as he stared at the doctor, clearly caught off guard.
Doctor Norman frowned.
"Both male and female omegas have cycles," he said flatly. "How do you think male omegas get pregnant?"
Jiang Li let out a small laugh at Shen Yu’s reaction.
"I don’t remember... it’s been a long time," he admitted.
Doctor Norman nodded before standing.
"Let’s proceed with the ultrasound."
Jiang Li lay down carefully, flinching the moment the cold gel touched his skin. The sensation made him tense immediately, but he forced himself to stay still.
The screen flickered to life.
At first, there was nothing.
Then slowly—
A tiny shape appeared.
Jiang Li’s breath caught as tears filled his eyes.
"...It looks like a bean," he said softly, a small laugh escaping through his tears.
"So small..."
Shen Yu remained silent, his gaze fixed on the screen as the reality settled in.
This was real.
Someone was growing there.
Jiang Li reached for him gently.
"I know what we should call our baby."
"What?" Shen Yu asked.
Jiang Li smiled.
"...Beanie."
A quiet laugh escaped Shen Yu.
"...It fits."
As they prepared to leave, Doctor Norman’s voice stopped them.
"If I’m not mistaken..."
His gaze locked onto Jiang Li.
"...your name is Xiao Li, isn’t it?"
Jiang Li froze.
His smile disappeared.
And once again—
The past caught up to the present.

A/N: I’ve always wondered why so many Omegaverse stories let male omegas go into heat but never give them periods. (゜ロ゜) Like... why? If they experience the same hormonal cycles and reproductive functions as female omegas, then in my world, it only makes sense that they would also experience menstruation.
Every Omegaverse has different rules, and this is simply how mine works! I wanted male omegas to experience both heat and menstruation because it feels more consistent with my worldbuilding.
So please don’t attack me! It’s just my interpretation of the Omegaverse. (╥﹏╥)
