Chapter 60, The Gambler on the Ship
After their tickets were checked and they successfully boarded the ship, Freya and Euphemia first put their luggage in their room.
Euphemia had bought a first-class cabin ticket. The room was very spacious and even had an enormous double bed. With that kind of setup, there was obviously no need to book two rooms. That would have been far too wasteful.
Euphemia had specifically asked Freya whether she minded, but Freya had asked back, “What do you mean, mind? We’re just sleeping together, right? What’s there to mind?”
When traveling, friends booking only one room and sleeping in the same bed should be perfectly normal, right?
They were friends. What was there to mind?
After putting away their luggage, Freya could not wait to head onto the deck. She placed both hands on the railing and looked at the endless horizon beyond the sea, taking a deep breath.
At that moment, a cool sea breeze carrying damp salt air blew over. Freya’s long brown hair drifted gently in the wind, and she could not help narrowing her eyes.
This feeling was honestly pretty nice.
Euphemia came to Freya’s side as well and leaned against the railing.
“Faye, judging by your expression, is this your first time on a ship?”
“Probably?” Freya said.
At any rate, the original Freya definitely had never been on a ship. As for her previous life, she could not remember.
Euphemia looked confused.
“If you’ve been on one, you’ve been on one. If you haven’t, you haven’t. What does probably mean?”
Freya tilted her head slightly.
“Then I haven’t?”
Euphemia still had the same expression.
“So why was that a question?”
After a pause, she continued, “Forget it, forget it. I’ll show you what facilities the ship has.”
As she spoke, Euphemia took Freya’s hand and began wandering around the ship with her.
Not long after, accompanied by a loud humming sound, the ship officially set off and began sailing.
After all, this was only a passenger ship, not a cruise ship built specifically for leisure. There were not many facilities. Most of the space was taken up by first-class cabins, second-class cabins, and steerage cabins. There was one dining hall, and the only entertainment venue was a small casino.
Even so, since it was their first time wandering around on a ship, Freya and Euphemia explored with great interest.
Seeing Euphemia like this, Freya could not help asking, “Effie, is this your first time on a ship too?”
Euphemia did not deny it.
“I’ve only seen ships from far away before. This is indeed my first time boarding one myself.”
When the two reached the entrance of the casino, they could see that some people had already started playing inside.
Euphemia suddenly said, “Speaking of which, with that absurd luck of yours, couldn’t you win big in there?”
But before Freya could answer, Euphemia said again, “Mmph, never mind. Gambling isn’t a good thing in the end. Let’s go.”
Euphemia did not want to drag Freya into the abyss of gambling. What if she developed a gambling addiction?
As she spoke, she quickly pulled Freya away.
Freya could only show an expression somewhere between laughter and helplessness.
She was not really an underage girl mentally. Her mind was mature enough, and she naturally knew how harmful gambling could be. Even if Euphemia had not said anything, she had no interest in gambling.
Just like that, after circling around, the two returned to their room.
Just as Freya was thinking about what to do next, she noticed that Euphemia’s complexion seemed a little off.
“What’s wrong?” Freya asked.
Euphemia hesitated for a moment, then said uncertainly, “I think... I might be a little seasick?”
As the ship gradually sailed farther out to sea, the swaying became more and more obvious.
Facts proved that this was not an illusion. Euphemia’s face grew worse and worse. Later, even when they went to lunch, Freya had to support her. In the end, Euphemia only managed a few bites before completely losing her appetite and returning to the room to lie on the bed like a corpse.
Freya had no solution for this either. This era did not seem to have anything like seasickness medicine.
With Effie forced to rest, Freya herself could not help getting a little bored.
She first took a book from Euphemia’s backpack and flipped through it casually, but she found she could not understand it at all. Soon, she lost interest and put the book back.
After that, Freya went to the deck alone.
She leaned against the railing, enjoying the sea breeze and looking at the scenery around her while thinking about how she should kill time over the next few days.
Stolen from its original source, this story is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.
It would take at least a week for this ship to reach its destination.
Clearly, during this week, Euphemia was in a “half-dead” state. She would probably be out of commission.
Just then, a somewhat frivolous voice sounded from behind Freya.
“Little lady, leaning on the railing like that isn’t safe. What if you accidentally fall?”
As the person spoke, he came to a stop about a step or two away from Freya.
Freya turned to look. He was a man in his thirties, with a cigarette between his lips and a beard that had not been shaved cleanly. He looked slightly sloppy.
He wore a black coat with a long hem that even covered his thighs. When Freya looked over, he even waved at her.
Freya asked in confusion, “Who are you? Do we know each other?”
The man smiled.
“We didn’t before, but we do now, don’t we? When I saw such an adorable girl standing alone on the deck in the sea breeze, it was hard to resist the urge to strike up a conversation. As for me... I was simply one tiny step faster than everyone else.”
As he spoke, the man glanced around.
Freya followed his gaze and looked around as well. She discovered that quite a few people really were looking at her. Just as he said, even if he had not come over to talk to her, someone else probably would have.
Then the man continued, “My name is [Victor Sterling]. Adorable miss, may I ask your name?”
“You can call me [Freya].”
After saying that, Freya tilted her head slightly and silently looked at him.
For some reason, Victor suddenly showed an expression that was partly surprised and partly puzzled. But he quickly adjusted himself and said instead, “Miss Freya, among the thousands upon thousands of people in this world, for us to board the same ship and head toward the same destination is itself a sign of fate, wouldn’t you agree?”
“And to celebrate this rare fate, beautiful Miss Freya, would you be willing to share a fine dinner with me tonight?”
Freya replied, “So what you mean is, everyone on this ship has fate with you? Then why aren’t you inviting someone else to dinner?”
Victor answered as if it were perfectly natural.
“Of course, because you’re beautiful. If everyone has fate with me, then I’d naturally rather dine with a cute and beautiful girl. Is there a problem with that?”
The fact that he could say it so confidently was impressive in a sense.
But Freya shook her head.
“Sorry. I need to keep someone company tonight.”
“That really is a shame,” Victor said.
Of course, even though he said that, there was no disappointment on his face. Instead, he casually waved his hand.
“Then let us meet again next time fate allows, adorable miss.”
After chatting with this man, Freya no longer felt like staying on the deck. She returned to the room she shared with Effie.
As for Victor, once Freya left, his earlier casual expression vanished. In its place was a puzzled look.
He was actually a practitioner, and a Rank Four Fate Path [Gambler] at that.
At Rank One, the Fate Path granted a passive ability called [Luck Enhancement]. But the amount of luck it improved was not much. It only made the user a little luckier than ordinary people, and this ability did not receive a clear improvement at Rank Two or Rank Three.
Only after choosing the [Gambler] class change at Rank Four would this passive ability receive a major strengthening.
A Rank Four [Gambler] also had another ability called [Luck Storage], which allowed the user to store up their usual luck and release it all at once when needed.
To be honest, Victor was not a good person.
He smoked, drank, gambled, and was rather lecherous. When he had approached Freya just now, he had activated his ability and significantly increased his luck.
On the deck of a moving ship, beside the railing, there was a cute girl wearing black stockings and a short skirt. Then Victor, with good luck on his side, walked over.
What kind of lucky thing might happen?
A sea breeze suddenly blowing past and lightly lifting the girl’s skirt would be very normal, right?
In fact, Victor had done this many times before. He had seen quite a few pretty girls embarrassed by such accidents.
But this time, something unexpected had happened.
Victor could clearly sense that his [Luck] had indeed been consumed, yet nothing lucky had happened at all.
That was very strange.
It was also why he had clearly frozen for a moment while speaking with Freya earlier.
After that, he had casually found another topic and glossed over it.
He had never actually intended to invite Freya to dinner. He had only planned to come over, watch her get flustered, and then leave.
As for the result, it had completely exceeded his expectations.
“Why did it fail?”
⸻
The perspective returned to Freya.
The afternoon slowly passed. Aside from taking care of Euphemia, Freya spent her time staring blankly into space.
Perhaps she had been excited when she first boarded the ship, but once enough time passed, only boredom remained.
Freya suddenly remembered that her first time riding a carriage had felt the same way.
She could only say that the first time was always fresh and interesting.
That evening, Freya went to the dining hall by herself, bought food for two, and brought it back.
By night, Euphemia’s condition actually looked a little better than it had in the morning. She seemed to have gotten somewhat used to it.
Of course, she had not gotten used to seasickness.
She had gotten somewhat used to vomiting.
Euphemia was now leaning back in a chair with a look of utter despair. If one looked closely, there even seemed to be a hint of tears at the corners of her eyes.
This should have been several happy days of living alone with Faye, and they could even sleep in the same bed. Two happy things were happening at the same time.
So why had things turned out like this?
Forget enjoying this time alone together. Even when Euphemia slept in the afternoon, she felt like she was flying through the sky, rising and falling again and again. It was torture.
Seeing this, Freya said, “How about we don’t take a ship on the way back?”
Since they were already on the ship, there was nothing they could do now. All they could do was pay more attention and avoid ships in the future.
“Mmph. Faye, you’re too good to me... urgh...”
Before Euphemia could finish speaking, she very skillfully picked up the sick bag beside her.
Seeing this, Freya could not help showing an expression that was both amused and helpless. She sighed.
“All you can do is rest more and pray we reach the destination quickly. There’s no other way.”
After that, the second day and third day both passed in boredom for Freya.
On the fourth day, while on her way to the dining hall to buy food, Freya saw the small casino again.
She stopped at the entrance for a moment and poked her little head inside to look around.
Just then, that slightly familiar, lazy voice sounded from behind her.
It was Victor.
“What a coincidence, Miss Freya. What, are you thinking of going into the casino to play?”
Freya turned and glanced at him.
“No. I’m just a little curious. And I’m still underage, so even if I wanted to go in and play, they wouldn’t let me, right?”
“Huh?” Victor froze. “You’re still underage?”
Freya tilted her head slightly.
“Yeah. What’s wrong? Do I not look like it?”
With her small and cute appearance, a normal person’s first reaction should definitely be to think she was underage, right?
Victor said, “Mainly, when I talk to you, there isn’t that childish feeling of talking to a kid. You give off a very mature impression.”
“Still, this casino doesn’t ask about age at all. As long as you have money and want to play, you can play. Though I don’t recommend you do that.”
Victor cleared his throat and continued, “Although I like gambling very much, it isn’t a good thing in the end. If possible, you should have as little contact with it as you can.”
Freya raised an eyebrow.
“Oh? I thought you were the type to cheat and trick children into gambling addiction. Turns out you’re the complete opposite?”
She continued, “But don’t worry. I’m not interested in gambling. I only came to look because I was too bored.”
That was the truth.
What did gambling pursue?
Was it not the thrill of risking a little for a huge return and making a fortune in an instant?
But to Freya, money was indeed important, yet not that important. As long as she had enough to spend, that was fine. She did not dream of becoming a millionaire or billionaire.
So the greatest temptation of gambling disappeared.
And when she thought about her steady good luck, if she gambled, she would probably win nine times out of ten.
That was like turning on cheat mode in a game. Winning all the time would definitely become boring.
