Chapter 52, The Vanishing Prey
After War Freya lost her senses and began using the “god’s-eye view” provided by Life Freya, her perception actually improved by a large margin. That was exactly why she had been able to lock onto the adjutant’s heart with such precision and achieve an instant kill.
War Freya hopped back a step. With a slight squeeze of her left hand, the heart made a wet, pulpy sound and was crushed bare-handed.
“Shheems like… I’m shtill a lil’ shtronger…” she said.
Clearly, she had not yet recovered from the concussion. Her language system was still not fully back online.
A thin stream of blood spilled from the corner of the adjutant’s mouth, while blood sprayed uncontrollably from the wound in his chest. He did not speak. Instead, he leaned forward slightly.
Right now, he had triggered [Battle Continuation] and entered his strongest state. War Freya, meanwhile, had been bleeding from an artery since the start of the fight and had just taken a heavy blow to the head. Her condition was terrible too.
One minute.
The adjutant was confident he could drag War Freya down with him and make her die at his side.
But just as the adjutant was about to launch himself forward, War Freya vanished from his sight without warning.
His movements froze in place.
“Where… where did she go?”
The situation felt exactly like a MOBA match where a character had just activated an ultimate, gained five seconds of invincibility, and was about to charge into the enemy team, only for everyone on the other side to run away. Or like an RPG boss fight where someone had just activated an invincible ultimate, only for the boss to force a cutscene, and by the time the cutscene ended, the invincibility was gone too.
In short, a deep sense of despair and helplessness surged through the adjutant’s chest.
Gritting his teeth, he crouched down and wiped his hand across the blood War Freya had left behind.
Aside from [All-Out Strike], a Rank Four War Path [Hunter] possessed another ability called [Bloodscent Pursuit]. As long as the Hunter obtained the target’s blood, activating this ability would allow him to sense the “prey’s” location.
If the distance between them was very great, he would only know a vague direction. As the distance narrowed, the sense would become more and more precise.
It was said that once a Hunter locked onto someone, that person could never escape the Hunter’s pursuit.
But after the adjutant activated the ability, he found that he could not sense War Freya’s position at all. He could not even get a vague direction.
“How is this possible?”
As for the actual reason, there was no need to say much. War Freya had been recalled into Freya’s system. She no longer existed in this world at all. How could the adjutant possibly track her?
Now that the adjutant’s [Battle Continuation] had been forced out, he would die on his own if left alone for a while. What else was there to say?
Of course she had to run.
Besides, War Freya’s injuries were fairly serious. It was better to let her stay inside the system save file for a bit. Once this incident ended, Life Freya could heal her.
The tale has been illicitly lifted; should you spot it on Amazon, report the violation.
It was worth mentioning that this fight looked like a duel between War Freya and the adjutant, but in truth, it had been a hidden three-on-one. Life Freya had provided vision from a distance, while Freya herself had recalled the clone at the last moment, preventing the adjutant’s dying counterattack from succeeding.
On the ruined street, amid the wreckage of collapsed houses, the adjutant threw his head back and roared.
It did nothing.
He could only stand there and watch helplessly as his life entered its final countdown.

At the same time, the scene returned to the main battlefield, where General Jerome stood.
The members of Special Affairs quickly arrived to support Jessica. Led by Nolan, the captains of all eight Special Affairs teams, along with two members of Jessica’s team, rushed at Jerome from the front. There were ten people in total, and every one of them was Rank Four. Each of them activated their abilities one after another.
Seeing this, Jerome was forced to give up the advantage he had in hand and retreat quickly.
In his place, one black-shadow [Soldier] after another stepped forward, taking up an orderly formation and blocking everyone who approached.
The [Soldiers] summoned by [One-Man Army] had a number limit. With Jerome’s current strength, his limit was one hundred. That meant every time he summoned a Soldier here, one of the other Soldiers scattered throughout the city would vanish into thin air.
But this was a crisis. Jerome obviously could not afford to care about that.
As he repeatedly activated his ability, all the carefully designed Soldiers distributed elsewhere in the city disappeared. In their place, this battlefield gained a full one hundred bare-bones black-shadow Soldiers.
Nolan was the first to make contact with the first group of black-shadow Soldiers. Carrying the force of his charge, he aimed at the Soldier directly in front of him and slammed into it with his shoulder.
But just as the Soldier staggered from the impact and Nolan prepared to press the advantage with a full combo, two other Soldiers immediately moved in. One blocked Nolan’s left fist, while the other braced against his right hand, helping share the impact of the attack.
Logically speaking, if that entire combo had landed on one person, it would have been enough to finish them off. Instead, those two Soldiers had neutralized it.
At the same moment, just as Nolan’s attack ended, two more Soldiers approached from the side and struck during the tiny gap when his old momentum had faded and his new force had not yet formed.
Nolan had no choice but to use his ability to deflect the two attacks. But as the fight continued, he realized every exchange was like this.
Whenever he attacked one Soldier, two Soldiers would help absorb the attack, while another two would circle to the side and sneak in strikes.
In animated films, when one person fought a crowd, that “crowd” usually attacked one at a time. It looked like a group fight, but in reality, it was just a series of one-on-one battles.
But in reality, villains were not stupid enough to take turns. Even someone very strong, when both sides had similar physical ability, would usually hit their limit at one against four or five.
Nolan could clearly feel it now. Two fists could not beat four hands. The coordination between these Soldiers was simply too good, as if they were comrades who had spent ten years fighting together on the battlefield.
Five people were producing combat power far beyond five people.
Nolan frowned deeply. During his next attack, he suddenly pushed his ability to the limit and unleashed his strongest blow without warning.
The Soldier he struck instantly exploded into something like black ink, splattering everywhere.
“Nice hit!”
“Beautiful!”
Seeing that, his teammates could not help shouting praise at Nolan.
But only Nolan himself knew something about that attack felt wrong.
Jerome’s [Battle Formation] had the effect of sharing damage. Yet when Nolan had attacked just now, faced with a full-force blow packed with spirituality, the Soldier that was struck had actually detached itself from the [Battle Formation] and chosen to take the entire attack alone. That was why it had exploded on the spot.
Then Nolan saw spirituality surge around Jerome in the distance.
In no time, Jerome summoned another one.
And right in front of Nolan, the Soldier he had just killed was immediately replaced by another. Special Affairs currently had eleven people on the battlefield, but Jerome had one hundred Soldiers.
On average, each member of Special Affairs had to fight nine or ten Soldiers.
And so, an absurd scene appeared.
Jerome alone was almost suppressing one Rank Five and ten Rank Four practitioners from Special Affairs.
“That’s ridiculous,” Life Freya murmured softly as she observed the entire battlefield through [Mind Sense] while still on the road.
Then she turned to the Earth Church members beside her and said, “We need to move faster!”
