The Girl Who Looted Tomorrow

Chapter 45, The Future Told Me

Freya said, “The future you told me all of that.”

“Huh?”

Euphemia was even more confused.

But after thinking about it, she realized the possibility was actually not low. Only a handful of people knew about that incident in the first place. Her parents, her grandfather, and that parrot were all in the capital of the Kingdom of Tarapaca, not in this city at all. Naturally, they could not have told this unfamiliar girl about it.

Besides, why would those elders go around telling other people Euphemia’s embarrassing stories for no reason?

So the person most likely to tell someone else about it really was Euphemia herself.

Euphemia asked, “Are you a Fate Path practitioner?”

As far as she knew, abilities related to “foreseeing the future” seemed to belong only to that path.

Freya shook her head. “No. Right now, I’m not a practitioner yet. And as for how I know the future, I’m sorry, but I can’t tell you that. Please believe me, though. I have no ill will toward you.”

The system was far too sensitive.

Freya could not tell anyone about it.

“All right, all right.”

Euphemia scratched her cheek with her index finger. She was gradually recovering from her confusion.

“So, Miss Freya, did you come looking for me because you need something?”

Freya tilted her head slightly. “What do you mean I came looking for you? Weren’t you the one who came over to flirt with me?”

Euphemia froze.

Now that she thought about it, that was true.

But as they talked, Freya had somehow taken control of the conversation.

Euphemia said, “So, uh… future me told you something this important and asked you to tell me. Was there a reason?”

Freya said, “Let’s find somewhere quiet first. Then we can talk slowly. How does that sound?”

Euphemia naturally had no objection.

Just like that, the two found a quiet coffeehouse nearby.

After glancing over the menu, Euphemia pushed it in front of Freya and asked, “What would you like to drink?”

Freya did not know much about coffee.

Compared with coffee, she preferred milk tea.

However, this era and this country did not seem to have milk tea. At least, she had not seen any so far.

So she said, “I haven’t had much coffee before, so I don’t know what tastes good. I’ll have the same as you.”

Euphemia nodded and waved a server over.

As she handed over the menu, she said, “Two special Black Rose coffees.”

The server bowed slightly. “Please wait a moment. They’ll be ready soon.”

Only then did Euphemia look back at Freya. “Can you tell me now?”

The two had originally sat across from each other with a small round wooden table between them.

But Freya moved her chair to Euphemia’s side.

After organizing her thoughts, she lowered her voice and said, “Simply put, twenty-nine days from now, a disaster will break out in this city and sweep through the whole place. We worked together to stop it, but we failed.”

“Ah?”

Euphemia froze. “I usually just take small commissions, like finding lost cats, lost dogs, or missing items. Are you sure I would accept such a terrifying major case?”

But as she spoke, Euphemia paused.

Then she said hesitantly, “All right. That actually does sound possible. Then what? What did we find out?”

Freya said, “We basically uncovered most of the situation. The mastermind is a kingdom general named Jerome. He is Rank Five of the War Path, and his class change is also [General]. He also has an adjutant under him, a Rank Four War Path practitioner whose class change is [Hunter].”

“General Jerome has three bases. The first is an old blue warehouse on Third Cross Street in the south of the city. In essence, it is a factory producing Demon Path potions. Jerome will have the [Soldiers] he summons distribute those potions everywhere to split Special Affairs’ attention and cover up his true purpose.”

“The second base is the back hill of Kobdo National Academy. In essence, that place is the core of an enormous occult array capable of burning down the entire city. The third base is right beside your home, Euphemia. Jerome is your neighbor.”

For the entire time, Euphemia kept her mouth slightly open, her expression blank.

She looked as if someone had cast a petrification curse on her.

Only when the server brought over two cups of coffee and placed them in front of them did she slowly come back to herself.

“Wait,” Euphemia said. “You mean… everything you just said is what General Jerome is going to do over the next twenty-nine days?”

Freya picked up her coffee and took a tiny sip.

A pained expression immediately appeared on her face, and she stuck out her little tongue.

“Mmm… probably.”

Euphemia asked, “Then what about now? What is General Jerome doing right now?”

Freya said, “Uh… I’m not very sure. He’s probably just about to start drawing the array?”

Euphemia stared at her.

Euphemia leaned back slightly and looked at Freya in shock.

Freya herself probably had not realized how ridiculous what she had just said sounded.

Removing all messy extra reasons and explanations, the information Euphemia had received was this.

A villain had only just begun to do evil, and yet everything about him had already been dug up. His plan, his goal, his bases, his helper, all of it was laid bare.

If everything Freya said was true, then Euphemia almost felt despair on behalf of that villain.

Why even bother doing evil at that point?

He might as well go home and farm.

Euphemia looked at Freya with a complicated expression.

She had no idea what to say anymore.

Although Freya was not a practitioner, in Euphemia’s eyes, she was far more mysterious than most practitioners.

After a short pause, Euphemia suddenly thought of something.

“So all of this was something the two of us found out together?”

Freya nodded. “Yes. The two of us.”

“Mmm…”

Euphemia showed a conflicted expression.

There were only two reasons she would take part in investigating such a huge case.

The first was “uncovering the truth,” which would help her digest her potion.

But now, all those truths had been placed directly in front of Euphemia.

It was true that she had uncovered them, but it had not been the current her. It had been the future her.

So how was the current situation supposed to count?

Had Euphemia’s Scholar Path potion been digested or not?

However, Euphemia soon stopped thinking about that problem.

If she gained it, she was lucky. If she lost it, that was fate.

Instead, she asked curiously, “Then what was the investigation like back then? Can you tell me about it?”

That was the second reason she might take part in the investigation.

Euphemia had been obsessed with detective novels for a very long time.

Naturally, she had also fantasized about encountering some earth-shattering case, experiencing all kinds of new and exciting adventures, and finally solving it successfully.

“Sure.”

Freya naturally did not mind.

As she organized her thoughts, she casually picked up the coffee and took another sip. Her original intention was only to moisten her throat.

Instead, the bitterness made her stick out her little tongue again.

“Mmm.”

Euphemia pushed the small jar of white sugar on the round table toward Freya.

“If it’s bitter, add some sugar.”

“Mm.”

Freya picked up the spoon and began adding sugar with great enthusiasm.

Then she started from the beginning, when the two of them investigated the abandoned warehouse and found nothing, and Euphemia rented a room near the warehouse for half a year.

Of course, Freya directly skipped over certain insignificant little matters, such as how she had “somehow” become the Earth Church’s Saintess and “somehow” turned into a Rank Four Earth Path practitioner.

She focused on telling Euphemia about their experiences investigating Jerome.

They had spent a week staking out the rented apartment, then gone out on a date and happened to run into Jerome himself.

They had followed him under the Invisibility Cloak, staked out the inn for an entire night, continued following him the next day, discovered Jerome’s residence, then happened to run into the adjutant and had to teleport away in an emergency.

Freya was not particularly good at storytelling.

Her voice did not rise and fall much. It was plain, almost like water, and she was simply describing everything calmly.

But precisely because of that calm narration, the story felt even more real.

Euphemia listened with great interest the whole time, nodding from time to time.

“Mm-hm. That does sound like something I would do.”

“The Invisibility Cloak really is incredibly useful.”

“Eh? Why could that guy discover us? That doesn’t make sense.”

When Freya reached the part where the two of them arrived at Special Affairs and waited for the Mobile Unit to arrive, Euphemia said, “It’s a little hard to imagine. Future me actually did something that reckless? Following a Rank Five practitioner… you know, I’m actually very timid. If I usually run into even a slightly dangerous situation, I definitely run far away.”

Freya shook her head.

“No. I think you’re very brave.”

After all, at the critical moment, Euphemia had used her life-saving extraordinary item on Freya without hesitation.
