The Girl Who Looted Tomorrow

Chapter 39, The City Ignites

It had to be said, the official practitioners near Nolan probably had not heard him clearly at all.

But Atticus, who stood more than three hundred feet away, had somehow “heard” him. That was honestly a little absurd.

A moment later, Atticus crouched down and pressed both hands to the ground.

In the middle of the battlefield, thick, solid earthen walls suddenly rose up one after another, directly dividing the entire battlefield into sections.

These walls did not completely block the road. Some left gaps on the left, some on the right, and some in the middle. Each opening was just wide enough for two people to pass through side by side.

That meant if the corps wanted to advance, they had to squeeze through those gaps.

And if they did that, their so-called formation would naturally stop existing.

What if the enemy chose to smash the walls apart and force the formation to hold?

They could do it, technically, but it would not be easy.

These walls had been created by a Rank Four practitioner using his ability at full strength. Instead of breaking through them head-on, it would probably be easier to tear down the buildings on both sides and go around, or climb over the walls.

But whether they went around or climbed over, their formation would still be broken.

In other words, this was an open trap.

Crack, crack, crack.

With a series of crisp sounds, steps began protruding from the walls on the official practitioners’ side.

Atticus took a deep breath and shouted at the top of his lungs, “Everyone, get on the walls and attack from above!”

On the surface, he was shouting that to the Earth Church believers.

In reality, the Earth Church believers were still some distance from the battlefield. The ones who heard him first were many official practitioners, who quickly climbed onto the earthen walls and fired down from higher ground.

Bang, bang, bang!

Gunfire rang out without stopping.

And what if the enemy [Soldiers] jumped onto the walls and fought the official practitioners in melee?

That would be a pure win.

Once they left the support of [Battle Formation], the official practitioners were not afraid of those [Soldiers].

What if the [Soldiers] refused to climb up and kept smashing the walls?

Then after the first set of earthen walls broke, the official practitioners could simply retreat to the next wall and keep shooting.

Without exaggeration, the moment the Earth Church joined the battle, the entire situation reversed.

Not to mention, Nolan saw a white-haired girl in a pure white dress, barefoot and with her eyes closed, slowly walking toward the front line on her small legs.

A visible green halo circled around her with a radius of about thirty feet.

Everyone within that halo began healing at a visible rate.

The wounded personnel who had retreated earlier were completely healed in the brief moment it took the white-haired girl to pass by them.

And when the girl reached the front line, Nolan himself entered the halo.

Although he was not injured, he could feel his spirituality, which had already been mostly consumed, recovering rapidly.

There was no need to say it.

This adorable girl was, of course, Freya.

As for the halo, it was the manifestation of her using [Healing] at full power.

Looking at Captain Nolan directly ahead of her, Freya gave him a sweet smile and said in her soft, lovely voice, “Go ahead and fight. I’ve got the rear covered.”

The corner of Nolan’s mouth lifted slightly.

If he did not need to worry about spirituality consumption and could use his ability without limit, his strength would become completely ridiculous.

Nolan turned and charged back into the battlefield.

Freya followed behind him, keeping about thirty feet of distance between them. It was close enough to give him the recovery buff, but as far from the front line as she could reasonably stay.

Thud. Thud. Thud.

As one [Soldier] after another fell, and as the number of remaining soldiers in the corps continued to shrink, their combat power also began to weaken.

Of course, Freya’s healing range was fairly large, but it still could not cover the entire battlefield.

There were still people on the official practitioners’ side who got injured.

But the moment someone was hurt, a tall, heavily muscled “medic” would pick them up and carry them to the rear for treatment.

In a certain sense, these “healers” looked far more reassuring than any delicate healer girl.

Seeing that the scales of victory had already begun tilting toward their side, Euphemia, who had originally stayed far in the back, finally crept over.

She waved as she approached Freya and said, “You got here just in time. If you’d been any later, I don’t even want to imagine how brutal this would’ve become.”

Thud, thud, thud!

On the other side of the battlefield, where Jessica and the adjutant fought, the two had already exchanged several blows in a single breath.

Cling.

With a clear ringing sound, the curved blade in the adjutant’s hand snapped.

Jessica followed through with the lightning-wrapped spear in her hand and cut off the adjutant’s right arm, the one holding the blade.

The [Listener] of the Law Path was an impossible class change to measure by normal standards.

Every [Listener] could be understood as having a different extraordinary ability, and all of that was because the core ability of [Listener] was called [Wish].

Starting at Rank Four, a [Listener] would directly receive one chance to make a wish.

The wish they spoke would be fulfilled as much as possible within certain limits.

For example, if a [Listener] wished to gain the ability [One-Man Army], then they really would receive that ability.

Some people might wonder whether they could wish to advance directly to Rank Eight, or wish for three more wishes.

Naturally, such ridiculous wishes could not be fulfilled. The moment they made that wish, the [Listener]’s spirituality would be drained dry. They would lose that chance to wish, and might even die from spiritual exhaustion.

That was why making a wish was a very delicate matter.

It also meant the strength of [Listeners] varied wildly. The powerful ones were truly powerful, while the weak ones were genuinely weak.

As for Jessica, her wish had been to obtain the weapon she currently held.

That wish had nearly killed her.

The way the wish was fulfilled was not by teleporting the weapon in front of her. Instead, it teleported Jessica to the place where the weapon was located.

To be honest, Jessica still did not know where she had been sent at the time.

It had been a pitch-black place. The spear had been embedded in a stone, and from the surrounding darkness, she could hear breathing rising and falling from all directions.

Fortunately, Jessica had been carrying an extraordinary item capable of teleportation at the time.

She pulled out the spear and immediately escaped.

In short, after going through all that trouble, the weapon Jessica obtained was naturally extremely powerful.

After severing the adjutant’s right hand, Jessica held the spear in one hand and pressed the tip against his throat.

“You’ve already lost. Surrender now, and I can still fight for a more dignified death for you.”

But even in such a hopeless situation, the adjutant suddenly laughed.

“Hahaha. From the moment I came here, I never planned to leave alive. And what you just said is exactly what I wanted to say to all of you. You have already lost.”

Boom, boom, boom!

Violent explosions erupted beside everyone’s ears without warning.

The ground began shaking violently, almost like an earthquake.

Nolan, Jessica, and even Freya opened their eyes.

At that moment, anyone who looked up could see three roaring pillars of flame rising into the sky, forming three small mushroom clouds.

They were located in the south, southeast, and southwest of the city.

The core reason General Jerome had distributed Demon Path potions everywhere was to split Special Affairs’ attention.

While those official practitioners were too busy to handle everything, he had his [Soldiers] draw [Array Nodes] in different parts of the city to lower the risk of discovery.

In essence, the array core on the back hill of the school was a detonation button.

The [Array Nodes] scattered across the city were independent bombs.

Jerome’s original plan had definitely been to wait until every bomb was installed before detonating them.

But under the current urgent circumstances, he had made a decision. He slightly modified the array core and forcibly detonated every bomb that had already been completed.

Almost in the blink of an eye, one-third of the city began to burn.

Seeing this, Archbishop Pantheon could not help cursing, “You two lunatics!”

Jessica also looked stunned.

She raised her head and stared at the distant flames.

At that exact moment, the adjutant’s spirituality suddenly began to gather.

While Jessica was distracted, he stepped forward and allowed Jessica’s spear to pierce straight through his throat.

At the same time, he quickly raised his remaining hand, the one holding a firearm, and decisively pulled the trigger.

However, the adjutant’s target was not Jessica.

It was somewhere on the battlefield.

Euphemia was currently on her way to Freya’s side.

If she wanted to move from the rear of the battlefield into the middle, she had to climb over one earthen wall after another.

Right now, she had just climbed onto one of the walls and stood at a higher point.

Looking at the raging flames in the distance and the thick smoke rolling across the sky, she could not help swallowing.

Then, when she looked back toward the battlefield, she happened to see the adjutant raise his gun and aim.

She immediately recognized the target of that shot.

It was Freya.

Even a clay figure had a temper, let alone a soldier who had spent years fighting outside the country.

To the adjutant, the ones responsible for the current situation were without a doubt Freya and Euphemia.

If not for those two, how could General Jerome’s plan have been exposed?

If not for those two, how could they have ended up fighting Special Affairs and the church?
