DMS Chapter 215
DMS Chapter 215
The passengers on the ferry started looking at Flinx differently. They regarded him with awe and respect since he was apparently powerful enough to destroy a flock of powerful wyverns in a short amount of time.
The fact that a few children were not afraid of him also showed that he was an amiable person. They had seen that Flinx didn’t mind the three children constantly asking him questions and was very patient in answering their queries.
The ferry started its journey back to Riverside, and during the trip, several people approached Flinx to thank him for defending the ferry from the wyverns. Among them were the captain of the ferry, the leader of the adventurers who had been hired to protect it, and some people who apparently thought it important to introduce themselves to someone as powerful as Flinx.
Suddenly, another startled shout rang out, and Flinx simply sighed. He thought that, like the others, it was another attack, but it turned out to be some powerful adventurers who had come from Riverside in response to the ferry’s call for help.
When the adventurers landed on the upper deck, the captain met with them and explained that a dozen powerful wyverns had flown in from the east with the intention of attacking the ferry, but a powerful adventurer who had been touring with them had stepped in to defend the small vessel from the flying monsters.
Like the other passengers, Flinx listened as the captain discussed the incident with the four adventurers who had arrived. He was impressed by how accurately the captain described what had happened.
The captain told the four powerful-looking adventurers that Flinx had cast a powerful, sinister-looking dark sphere that seemed to suck everything in its vicinity, even light. The gravitational force of the two spheres had pulled the wyverns apart until their bodies were completely destroyed.
Flinx had to admit that he was impressed by how the captain described his ninth-level spell, Ravenous Void.
After describing the details of the attack, the captain led the four adventurers to Flinx. To avoid any misunderstanding, Flinx had long since donned his diamond-rank Adventurer Guild badge.
When the adventurers saw his badge, the relief on their faces made Flinx think that his decision to display it had been the correct one.
“Good afternoon, Sir Flinx. My name is Ishmael. This is Bursa, Doreen, and Remuel. We’re diamond-rank adventurers currently assigned to Riverside, but we’re usually based in the kingdom of Numidor,” the man introduced himself and his group.
Ishmael knew Flinx’s name because the captain had already told him.
“I’m a diamond-rank wizard adventurer based in Ilioven. I’m currently in the middle of exploring the different kingdoms of this continent. I was touring the lake with the other passengers on the ferry when those wyverns were spotted in the distance. It seemed to me that the adventurers on board weren’t enough to defeat those monsters, so I took action. I didn’t want anyone to die while I was nearby. I hope I didn’t violate any rules or anything like that,” Flinx told them.
“Of course not. We’re thankful that you were here. If not, more than likely, we would have found very few survivors,” the woman named Doreen said.
After that, instead of leaving the ferry to return to Riverside immediately, the four adventurers stayed aboard during the journey back to town so they could continue speaking with Flinx.
The three children who had been with Flinx had finally allowed their parents to retrieve them. More than likely, the children felt that the four newly arrived powerful adventurers weren’t as amiable as Flinx.
“According to the captain, you killed the wyverns in just a couple of minutes!” Bursa exclaimed.
Flinx simply nodded.
“Have you been tested for a higher rank?” Ishmael asked.
Flinx told them that he hadn’t applied for a higher adventurer rank because he had been busy since his last rank-up test.
The four adventurers urged him to take the test, explaining that having a higher rank would allow him to receive considerable political power in any kingdom where the Adventurer Guild was considered extremely important.
Since most of the benefits that came with ranking up appeared to involve gaining greater political influence, Flinx told the four adventurers that he wasn’t interested in acquiring more local political power. He was a foreigner in this land, after all, and therefore had little interest in becoming politically influential.
“As long as I’m allowed to delve into any of the dungeons, I’m fine with my current rank.”
“Are you planning to delve into the dungeon in Riverside?” Ishmael asked.
“I was planning to check it out a little, but now I’m having second thoughts. To be honest, I’m more interested in exploring the continent. Mostly the wilderness rather than the kingdoms. Because I’m powerful enough, I’m not afraid of any of the monsters in the wild. I was also recently affected by a personal trauma, and the solitude of exploring the wilderness alone is bringing me a kind of mental healing that I’ve found I need.”
For some reason, Ishmael suddenly looked envious. Then the man sighed.
“I would have liked to explore the land as well, but I have too much responsibility right now. I simply can’t leave.”
Ishmael’s companions looked at him with astonished expressions.
Flinx could understand Ishmael’s weariness and his companions’ disbelief. Ishmael looked to be decades older than the other three, which meant that the man was probably a little tired of his responsibilities. His companions, on the other hand, were all relatively young and were still enamored with their power and the excitement it brought into their lives.
During the journey back to Riverside, the four adventurers told Flinx about the common situation faced by adventurers of their rank who were assigned to guard some of the more important places in the kingdom.
Mostly, they had to deal with emergencies such as sudden attacks by powerful monsters, like the wyvern attack, or sudden bandit attacks involving powerful members.
Ishmael admitted that, most of the time, when powerful monster attacks occurred somewhere far from the town they were assigned to, they would usually arrive too late. That meant that many people would have already died by the time they arrived.
Just like with the wyverns’ attack.
If Flinx hadn’t been there, more than likely, the only survivors the four adventurers would have found upon arriving would have been the adventurers hired to guard the ferry.
Unfortunately, that kind of situation was common in this world.
“Can I buy the mana stones from the wyverns?” Bursa suddenly asked.
Flinx was startled.
“I didn’t retrieve them. More than likely, they’re at the bottom of the lake.”
“That’s a pity. I’m sure the mana stones were probably high-level or medium-level mana stones,” Bursa sighed.
“If you want, I can retrieve them,” Flinx said.
Flinx then went to the rails and cast his fifth-level Conjuration spell, Conjure Elemental, using his thirteenth-level spell slot on the lake.
To the amazement of the four high-level adventurers and the other passengers, a gigantic water elemental appeared beside the ferry.
“Go and retrieve the mana stones from the wyverns that fell into the water,” Flinx commanded his summoned water elemental.
The passengers, who had mostly remained silent while listening to the conversation between the five high-level adventurers openly discussing the incident without any regard for who might overhear them, suddenly became noisy.
They exclaimed at the appearance of the enormous water elemental that Flinx had summoned.
Some of them said that with that elemental alone, the ferry would have been safe from the wyverns.
The four adventurers overheard those comments and asked Flinx if that would have been true.
Flinx admitted that it was.
He saw the four adventurers reevaluating their assumptions about his actual power level, but he really didn’t care.
Flinx felt that his decision to leave the town and continue his exploration was the right choice rather than checking out the sole dungeon in Riverside.
He wanted some rest from combat. He had been fighting for several months, after all.
