Flinx didn't mind staying in the middle of the unknown forest while waiting for his friends to find more people they could use to test their theory about the transmigration system.
The forest was breathtaking during the autumn season. The trees were painted in brilliant shades of yellow, orange, and red, making the entire landscape seem almost magical. Simply gazing at the colorful scenery was enough to help him relax.
Since it was only the beginning of autumn, the forest was still teeming with life. Birds sang from the treetops while insects filled the air with their constant chorus.
Flinx's Hallucinatory Terrain spell only affected creatures that possessed a certain level of intelligence, such as monsters and people. Ordinary animals were completely unaffected.
He had already dismissed the enormous Galder's Tower he had conjured for himself and his friends, replacing it with the much smaller Galder's Tower Log Cabin while he waited for Paul's message regarding the people he intended to bring to this magical world.
Initially, Flinx had planned to camp beside a campfire. However, the occasional autumn rain quickly forced him to abandon that idea.
Instead, he settled comfortably on a couch before the fireplace inside the log cabin. A cool autumn breeze drifted through the open window, carrying the fresh scent of the forest while dispersing some of the fireplace's warmth.
Ordinarily, keeping a fireplace burning with an open window would have been wasteful, but this fireplace was fueled by magic rather than firewood.
Sipping a mug of hot cocoa, Flinx began reading The Magic of Recluce, the first novel in L. E. Modesitt Jr.'s Saga of Recluce.
Having already finished The Spellsong Cycle, he wanted to explore more of Modesitt's work. He wasn't even sure whether he would ever finish The Saga of Recluce, considering it contained twenty-six novels.
More than three hours later, Paul finally sent him a message through the web-based chat program they used to communicate.
He had recruited a family of three for the experiment—a Mexican couple in their late twenties and their eight-year-old son.
"Is it really alright to experiment on a family?" Flinx asked hesitantly.
"We're not hurting them," Paul replied. "In fact, I was hoping you'd heal their son with your Cleric spell. Tomas has leukemia. We're also paying them a substantial amount of money."
"Why don't you just use your Wand of Healing?" Flinx asked.
"I could," Paul admitted. "To tell you the truth, we've already tested it in secret. It cured cancer."
Flinx stared at him.
"That's why it took me so long to find this family. Secretly curing one cancer patient created a huge mess at the hospital. No one knew I used the Wand of Healing. Everyone assumed it was some kind of miracle, and now it's all over the news."
Paul sighed.
"I had to tell Pedro and his wife that I knew a healer who could cure Tomas. They were desperate enough to try anything."
Paul also explained that he had created a presentation on his tablet illustrating what the system interface looked like. That way, when they questioned Pedro and his wife, they could accurately determine whether either of them had received the transmigration system.
"Aren't you worried your life will become complicated if Pedro and his wife tell people you know someone who can cure leukemia?" Flinx asked.
Paul simply shrugged.
"I'll deny it. I'm a wealthy doctor, and they're immigrants. It'll be my word against theirs. Besides, I doubt they'll say anything after I pay them a fortune."
Since Paul and the family were already waiting in the secluded alley with their blindfolds on, Flinx wasted no time.
He cast Plane Shift and traveled back to Earth.
After confirming that no one else was nearby, Flinx dispelled his invisibility.
Only Paul, the Mexican man Pedro, his wife, and their son remained in the alley.
Without delay, Flinx held onto them and cast Plane Shift once more, transporting the five of them to the unnamed forest in the other world.
The crisp autumn air was noticeably colder than Earth's.
After Paul instructed Pedro to remove the blindfolds from himself and his family, they quickly entered Flinx's log cabin.
Flinx immediately noticed how frail Tomas looked.
The boy was being carried by his father. His head was completely bald, and his pale complexion reminded Flinx of terminally ill cancer patients he had only seen on television.
Tomas's parents looked incredibly anxious.
As soon as they laid the boy on Flinx's bed, Flinx cast his sixth-level Cleric spell, Heal.
Pedro and his wife's eyes widened in disbelief.
Color quickly returned to Tomas's face. He suddenly sat upright and looked around in confusion.
When he saw his parents nearby, he immediately relaxed.
"Mom... I'm hungry," Tomas said softly.
Pedro and his wife rushed to embrace their son, sobbing uncontrollably.
Several minutes later, Tomas began squirming again.
While the family had been focused on their reunion, Flinx had purchased a large assortment of food from the System Shopping Site—more than enough for everyone. The delicious aroma was undoubtedly what had caught Tomas's attention.
Looking at the boy's bald head, Flinx wondered whether his Cleric spell, Regeneration, could restore his hair as well.
Without thinking much about it—or asking his parents' permission—he cast the spell.
Everyone stared in amazement as Tomas's scalp suddenly sprouted hair.
It continued growing until it reached his shoulders.
The sight caused Tomas's mother to collapse to her knees in prayer.
Moments later, Pedro joined her.
Flinx found their reaction rather curious.
Healing their son's leukemia hadn't driven them to prayer, yet restoring his hair had.
Seeing the confusion on Flinx's face, Paul quietly explained.
"They still don't know for certain that Tomas is cured of leukemia. Medical tests are still needed to confirm it. But seeing his hair grow back right before their eyes... that's undeniable."
After several minutes of persuasion, Pedro and his wife finally stopped praying and began eating.
In the end, Tomas's repeated complaints about being hungry proved far more convincing than anything Flinx or Paul could say.
While everyone ate, Paul questioned Pedro and his wife extensively about the transmigration system.
After carefully verifying their answers, he and Flinx confirmed that none of the three had received the system.
That strongly supported Flinx's theory that the transmigration system originated from the gate the Torbal Wizards had used to abduct them.
Since Paul was a doctor, he spent considerable time explaining how Pedro and his wife should help Tomas recover his strength as quickly as possible.
Naturally, once they returned to Earth, Paul would personally arrange additional medical examinations to confirm that Tomas's leukemia had truly been cured.
Paul wasn't concerned about his former hospital discovering the miracle.
Tomas had never been a patient there, so there would be no medical records linking the boy to him.
Paul also intended to cover all of Tomas's medical expenses himself.
In truth, none of Flinx's friends had to worry about money anymore. Thanks to the wealth they had brought back from Ilioven, they were all financially secure.
Once Pedro, his wife, and Tomas were blindfolded again, Flinx transported everyone back to Earth.
After leaving the family safely with Paul, Flinx immediately returned alone to the other world.
Paul promised to keep him informed of Tomas's medical test results through their online chat.
By the time Flinx returned to the unnamed forest, it was already late afternoon.
Rather than continue traveling, he decided to spend one more night in the peaceful forest before resuming his journey the following day.
