Chapter 38 – Versus the Queen of Shadows

Chapter 38 – Versus the Queen of Shadows

Shin did not lie at all.

He led Zerova through the deepest part of the slums, where countless poor hoodlums had built makeshift homes from warped timber, rusted sheets of metal, and faded scraps of cloth. Narrow alleys twisted between leaning shacks, their muddy paths littered with broken bottles and discarded crates. The pungent scent of stale ale, smoke, damp earth, and rotting garbage lingered heavily in the humid air.

Despite the harsh living conditions, people continued with their daily routines. Children chased each other barefoot through puddles while old men repaired torn clothing outside their homes. Others simply sat on overturned barrels, watching the strangers pass with tired but calm eyes.

Zerova quietly observed every corner, her golden eyes sweeping across the surroundings without missing a single detail. So far, she sensed no hostility from the slum dwellers. Their eyes carried exhaustion rather than malice. Without saying another word, she simply allowed Shin to lead the way until they stopped before a familiar establishment.

The weathered wooden sign above the entrance read Iron Heaven. The bar looked old enough to collapse at any moment, yet the loud laughter spilling through its windows suggested otherwise. Rough looking hoodlums occupied the doorway, passing bottles between one another while thick clouds of cigarette smoke drifted lazily into the street. The smell of alcohol mixed with tobacco hung heavily around the entrance, almost strong enough to sting the nose. Several men glanced at Shin before quietly looking away, pretending not to recognize him.

"Get out of here. It will be dangerous," Zerova said calmly, never taking her eyes off the entrance.

"Got it."

Shin nodded and obediently walked away. He had barely taken three steps before his feet came to a halt. His shoulders stiffened, and he slowly looked back over them.

His conscience refused to stay silent.

Zerova had done nothing to threaten him. She had trusted him enough to follow him here, and despite knowing who she was, she had treated him with courtesy. The weight of that realization settled heavily inside his chest.

Perhaps sensing his hesitation, Zerova turned around to face him. Her long black hair swayed gently as her sharp golden eyes met his.

"What is it, Mister Rebellium?" she asked.

Shin quickly shook his head and forced a smile.

"No. Nothing."

"Are you getting worried that your secret might come out?" Zerova asked with a faint smile curling across her lips.

The words struck him like a bolt of lightning.

His body froze in place. A cold chill crawled down his spine as beads of sweat slowly formed across his forehead before trickling down his cheeks. His heartbeat pounded painfully against his ribs.

"What do you mean... secret?" Shin asked, struggling to keep his voice steady.

"That... you're part of the Iron Bandits."

A crescent smile spread across Zerova's face.

"What? No!" Shin immediately denied.

"I am not an idiot, Shin Rebellium," Zerova replied. "I can smell it the moment I arrived here. The scent of these slums clings to your clothes and your skin. It is the smell of someone who has spent countless days living among these people. You are no stranger to this place."

She slowly took a step forward, her cat ears twitching as the evening breeze brushed against them.

"But that is not all."

Her sharp nose twitched once.

"I smell bloodlust buried beneath your calm expression. I smell guilt that you desperately try to hide. Those scents do not disappear no matter how many lies you tell. They linger far longer than blood itself."

Shin let out a nervous laugh, trying to mask the panic rising inside him.

"Wow... so you can really smell all that? As expected from a beastkin."

"Not only that," Zerova continued without reacting to his attempt at humor. "I can smell Lireina's scent on you. You've been spying on her, haven't you? Taking advantage of that idiot's kindness while pretending to be someone worthy of her trust."

The smile disappeared from Shin's face.

His hands slowly curled into fists until his fingernails dug painfully into his palms. Every instinct screamed that Zerova could not be allowed to leave this place alive. She had uncovered far too much. If she escaped, everything the Iron Bandits had built would crumble overnight.

Zerova continued speaking as though she had already reached her conclusion.

"I have been wondering for months why the Iron Bandits always managed to stay one step ahead. Every raid failed. Every robbery ended in their favor. Even the assassination attempt against one of the Celestial Wardens was carried out with frightening precision." Her golden eyes narrowed. "Now I understand. The Iron Bandits were blessed with a cunning snake hiding among innocent people."

Without another word, Zerova reached beneath her cloak and drew a sleek black dagger. Its polished blade reflected the dim afternoon light with a cold silver gleam. She lowered her center of gravity, her muscles relaxing instead of tensing as she assumed a battle stance perfected through years of assassination. Every movement was silent and graceful, like a predator preparing to pounce.

"You may have fooled the Untouchable Windwalker," Zerova said, her voice becoming colder than the steel in her hand, "but you can never fool the Queen of Shadows."

The instant those words left her lips, darkness swallowed the sky.

The warm afternoon light vanished as an unnatural veil of black spread across the streets. Shadows stretched unnaturally long, consuming the walls, rooftops, and alleyways until every corner looked identical. Thick black smoke seeped from the ground like living mist, curling around broken barrels and abandoned carts before flooding the entire street. The laughter inside Iron Heaven abruptly fell silent, replaced by an unsettling stillness that made even the distant wind disappear.

Then Zerova was gone.

She did not run.

She simply vanished into the darkness as though she had become part of it.

Shin's breathing became shallow as he slowly turned his head, desperately searching the sea of shadows surrounding him. His ears strained to catch the faintest footstep, but there was nothing. No breathing. No movement. No heartbeat besides his own. The silence was far more terrifying than any roar.

Cold sweat soaked his back as every nerve in his body screamed the same warning.

One mistake.

One opening.

One invisible strike from the Queen of Shadows.

That was all it would take for him to die.

Shin spun around, desperately searching for even the slightest hint of Zerova's location. His eyes darted from one dark alley to another, but every corner looked the same beneath the unnatural veil of darkness. The thick shadows swallowed every outline, while the black mist drifting across the ground distorted his vision even further. His ears strained to catch the faintest sound, yet the entire street had fallen into an eerie silence. It was as if the world itself had stopped breathing. Every second that passed tightened the knot in his chest. He knew Zerova was close. He simply had no idea where.

Then, above him, a ripple spread through the darkness.

Without making the slightest sound, Zerova emerged from the shadows like a phantom descending from the night sky. Her golden eyes gleamed with murderous intent, and her black dagger flashed with a deadly silver light as she dove straight toward Shin. The blade cut through the air with frightening speed, leaving him barely enough time to widen his eyes in shock.

"Watch out!"

Mastema's voice echoed across the street.

A brilliant white figure burst between them in a streak of blue flames. Mastema instantly drew her Anti Magic blade, and the two weapons collided with an explosive clang that sent bright sparks flying in every direction. The force of the impact rippled through the street, blowing away the surrounding smoke and kicking up loose dust and broken stones. The shockwave brushed past Shin's face, causing him to instinctively throw himself backward. He rolled across the rough ground, his clothes scraping against gravel before finally coming to a stop several meters away.

Panting heavily, Shin looked up at his savior.

"Thanks, Mastema!"

Zerova gracefully flipped backward and landed several meters away, her boots touching the ground without making a sound. She narrowed her golden eyes as she clicked her tongue in frustration.

"Tch. I was too close."

Mastema slowly straightened her posture and stepped in front of Shin, shielding him with her towering mechanical body. The polished white armor reflected the dim light filtering through the darkness, while the emerald glow of her visor burned brightly against the black surroundings. Her sword remained firmly pointed toward Zerova, ready to intercept another attack at a moment's notice. The low mechanical hum of her Halochassis echoed through the empty street, filling the silence with quiet determination.

A smile slowly spread across Zerova's lips.

"I knew it was a trap all along," she said. "Where are the other three? Where's Azazel, Samael, and Armaros?"

"It's just you and me, Zerova," Mastema answered, her calm mechanical voice carrying unwavering confidence. "I want to finish what we started back at the Northern Fortress."

"I'm sorry, but no can do."

Zerova reached beneath her cloak and casually pulled out a flare gun.

"I am not foolish enough to fight all of you alone. I'll call my allies and expose every single one of you." Her sharp gaze shifted toward Shin. "Starting with you, Shin Rebellium."

Shin's heart skipped a beat.

His jaw tightened as his armored gauntlet emitted a faint metallic click. Mana flowed in the device wrapped around his arm, causing glowing runes to spread across its surface. He prepared himself to summon Azazel at the first sign of danger.

Before Zerova could squeeze the trigger, an enormous crimson dragon burst from the shadows behind her.

Its scales shimmered like burning embers, and its blazing golden eyes locked onto the flare gun. The dragon lunged forward with terrifying speed, its massive jaws snapping shut with a thunderous crunch. Zerova reacted instantly, pulling her hand away at the last possible moment. Her fingers escaped the dragon's teeth by mere centimeters, but the flare gun was not as fortunate. The dragon crushed the weapon into twisted pieces of metal before scattering the broken remains across the street.

"Tch!"

Zerova leaped backward once again, her expression finally showing genuine irritation.

The crimson dragon's body shimmered with scarlet light before rapidly shrinking. Its scales dissolved into countless glowing particles that gathered into the shape of a towering armored warrior. Moments later, Armaros stood proudly upon the broken pavement, his crimson armor gleaming beneath the darkened sky. He planted his massive broadsword firmly into the ground with a heavy thud, sending thin cracks spreading across the stone beneath his feet.

"Your life ends here, Queen of Shadows," Armaros declared in a deep, unwavering voice. "We will not allow you to escape."

Zerova silently assessed the battlefield.

One Halochassis had already been troublesome enough during their previous encounter. Now two stood before her while Shin remained ready to summon a third at any moment. If Samael truly lurked nearby, then fighting head on would be nothing more than suicide. Her greatest strength had never been overwhelming force. It had always been disappearing before anyone could catch her.

Without hesitation, her body dissolved into darkness.

The outline of her figure melted into the shadows beneath her feet until only a moving patch of darkness remained, gliding swiftly across the ground. It slipped between broken barrels and beneath abandoned carts without making a sound, almost impossible to distinguish from the countless other shadows surrounding it.

"Get back here!"

Blue flames erupted violently from Mastema's backpack as she accelerated forward. The pavement shattered beneath her feet, and she swung her glowing blade directly at Zerova's fleeing shadow. The sword sliced cleanly through it, but instead of resistance, the blade met nothing but empty air. The shadow rippled for an instant before continuing its escape as though the attack had never happened.

"Normal attacks won't work!" Armaros shouted. "We need the Swords of Light!"

He tilted his head toward the heavens.

"Samael!"

Far above the clouds, nearly brushing the edge of the stratosphere, Samael had been silently waiting.

The blue Halochassis folded its arms before diving straight toward the earth like a falling meteor. Friction ignited the surrounding air, leaving a brilliant streak of blue light cutting across the darkened sky. As the ground rushed closer, Samael spread its enormous metallic wings. With a series of sharp mechanical clicks, each wing separated into four floating blade shaped fragments, forming a total of eight radiant swords. Brilliant white light erupted from every blade, their glow piercing through Zerova's sea of shadows like rays of dawn breaking through the longest night.

The eight Swords of Light descended like divine judgment, streaking across the darkened sky before slamming into the earth with deafening explosions. Each blade embedded itself deep into the streets surrounding Iron Heaven, sending cracks racing across the stone pavement. Brilliant pillars of white light erupted from every sword, connecting into a radiant barrier that covered nearly three hundred meters in every direction.

The overwhelming glow drove back the unnatural darkness, forcing the thick black mist to evaporate with hissing sounds. Every shadow within the barrier shrank until there was nowhere left for darkness to hide. The once gloomy slums were suddenly illuminated as brightly as midday, exposing every alley, every rooftop, and every corner that Zerova had intended to use as her sanctuary.

Without the protection of the shadows, Zerova's intangible form was forcibly expelled back into reality. Her body materialized in mid stride, leaving her exposed in the middle of the glowing battlefield. Before she could react, a brilliant flash erupted high above.

Samael had already locked onto her position.

A concentrated beam of azure energy roared downward from the sky, tearing through the air with a piercing shriek. The blast struck the street directly ahead of Zerova, erupting into a violent explosion that vaporized the pavement and scattered chunks of molten stone in every direction. The shockwave blasted against her body like a wall, forcing her to halt her charge.

"Ghh!"

Zerova planted her foot against the ground, grinding her boots across the shattered pavement as she desperately stopped herself. Tiny fragments of stone scraped beneath her feet while heat from the beam scorched her face. Without wasting another heartbeat, she threw herself sideways. The edge of the beam grazed past her shoulder by the narrowest margin, leaving the sleeve of her cloak singed and fluttering away in burning ashes. Had she reacted a fraction of a second slower, she would have been reduced to nothing.

"You're locked in here, Zerova!" Shin shouted from across the battlefield, his voice echoing through the illuminated streets. "Surrender and accept your fate!"

His taunt carried a mocking confidence that immediately caught Zerova's attention.

She turned toward the source of the voice and spotted Shin sprinting away through the ruined street. His movements looked rushed, almost panicked, as though he were trying to create distance between himself and the battlefield. Zerova narrowed her golden eyes.

The Halochassis were dangerous, but they only followed orders.

Shin was different.

He was the mind behind the Iron Bandits' victories. Every successful ambush, every flawless escape, every failed operation against the bandits pointed back to him. As long as he remained alive, he would continue devising plans that would slowly dismantle the Empyrea from the shadows. Eliminating him now would cripple the Iron Bandits far more than defeating any Halochassis.

A cold smile spread across her lips.

"I'm not locked in here with you." She lowered her stance and tightened her grip around her dagger. "You're locked in here with me."

The instant she finished speaking, she exploded forward.

The cracked pavement burst beneath her feet as she accelerated with astonishing speed, her body becoming little more than a black blur racing straight toward Shin. Murderous intent radiated from her like an icy storm, and the gleaming edge of her dagger reflected the light of Samael's barrier. Every instinct within her screamed that Shin had to die before the others could intervene.

Then Shin calmly raised his gauntlet.

"Awaken... Azazel."

The command echoed through the battlefield.

An intense golden light erupted from the gauntlet wrapped around Shin's arm. Brilliant streams of mana spiraled around his body, expanding into a dazzling sphere that forced Zerova to shield her eyes. The light pulsed with immense power before rapidly solidifying into countless black and gold armor plates. One after another, they locked perfectly into place around Shin's body with sharp metallic clicks. A sleek black helmet enclosed his head, while elegant golden lines glowed across the armor like rivers of molten sunlight. Vast mechanical wings unfolded from his back with a thunderous burst, scattering waves of wind throughout the street.

The transformation lasted only a few seconds.

When the light finally faded, Shin was gone.

Standing before Zerova was the legendary Halochassis known as Azazel.

For the first time since the battle began, genuine shock appeared across Zerova's face.

Her pupils shrank.

Everything suddenly made sense.

The mysterious strategist.

The impossible escapes.

The flawless coordination between the Iron Bandits and the Halochassis.

The cunning traitor she had been hunting...

...was Azazel himself.

Before the revelation could fully settle into her mind, Azazel vanished from her sight.

A violent gust of wind exploded in front of her.

His armored fist crashed directly into her face with overwhelming force.

Boom!

The impact echoed like a cannon blast. Zerova's head snapped violently to the side as blood sprayed into the air. Her body was launched across the street, bouncing against the broken pavement again and again before skidding to a stop in a shower of shattered stone. The metallic taste of blood flooded her mouth as crimson droplets splattered across the ground beneath her.

Dazed, battered, and barely able to steady her breathing, Zerova slowly lifted her head.

Blood trickled from the corner of her lips onto the fractured pavement.

For the first time since arriving in the slums, the Queen of Shadows realized she was facing an enemy far more dangerous than she had ever imagined.
