70. Amidst the Bustle
Around the time Takuma had entered the venue, Rena was wandering alone around the food stalls outside the arena.
The amount of money she had been given — three silver coins — was more than enough to buy dinner. Even if Rena ate until she was completely full, there would still be change left. She didn’t have to worry about money at all.
The only thing she needed to think about was what to eat to fill her stomach.
Having lived by hunting until now, this was Rena’s first time in a place like this. She didn’t even know how to buy food at first.
After looking around for a while, she quickly understood the system: line up in front of a stall, say the name of the dish, and hand over money to receive it.
All that remained was deciding what she wanted to eat. With so many different food stalls, Rena found herself completely overwhelmed, her eyes darting from one to another.
There were dishes she had never seen before, simple grilled meats, and many others. Deciding she wanted to try something whose scent and appearance she had never encountered, Rena wandered alone from stall to stall.
Outside the venue was lively with many people. Cheers could be heard from inside the arena, but they were faint — so quiet that only a beastman like Rena could notice them.
There were mostly men, but she also saw families and children. Everyone looked like they were having fun. Just being here made Rena feel happy too.
While enjoying the atmosphere and wondering what to eat, Rena became less attentive to her surroundings than usual. She accidentally bumped into someone passing by.
“Ouch!”
The man she collided with grimaced slightly and raised his voice.
“What the hell? Suddenly bumping into me?” “No, you bumped into me. You get that, right?” “What are you doing, huh?”
The person Rena bumped into was one of a group of three men. The man she hit was touching the spot where they had collided, while the other two stared at Rena intently.
“Hey, did you bump into this girl?” “Huh? Yeah, probably.” “I see, I see. Sorry about that. Are you okay? You’re not hurt, are you?” “No, I’m fine. I’m sorry.” “It’s okay, it’s okay. Don’t worry about this guy’s injury. We’re more worried about you, miss.” “Yeah, yeah. Are you hurt anywhere?” “I’m really not hurt…”
The two men crowded closer to her. Though they might have been acting out of kindness, to Rena it was only unpleasant.
On top of that, in this crowded place there was no personal space to begin with. The way the men slowly inched even closer made Rena feel increasingly uncomfortable.
“Well then…”
After apologizing, Rena tried to leave quickly, but one of the men grabbed her hand.
“Hey, hey. Since this is some kind of fate, why don’t you hang out with us for a bit?” “Look, if there’s anything you want to eat, we’ll treat you.”
The moment they touched her hand, Rena’s discomfort reached its peak. Without thinking, she tensed her body to throw the man who had grabbed her.
But for some reason, no strength entered her body at all.
Instead, her knees suddenly buckled, making it difficult even to stay standing.
“There, see? You’re not okay after all.” “We’ll take care of you slowly, so let’s move somewhere else.”
The man who had grabbed her hand easily lifted Rena into a princess carry, and she was carried away by the three men.
“Taking care of her is fine, but a girl wandering around alone and bumping into people… She might need a little discipline…”
The man Rena had bumped into muttered meaningfully. The other two smiled eerily.
“Yeah…” “Exactly…”
Without understanding why her body had suddenly lost all strength, Rena was taken away by the three men. They left the area with the food stalls and headed toward a deserted back alley.
—-
Rena was taken away from the food stalls in front of the venue by the three men and brought into a dimly lit back alley.
The entire time, she tried to escape, but her body refused to move as if weighed down by invisible weights. She couldn’t even muster any strength — she couldn’t raise her arms at all.
“This spot should be fine.” “Yeah.”
Once they reached the deserted, dimly lit alley, the man carrying Rena gently set her down on the ground.
Rena had been looking for any chance to run, but her body still wouldn’t listen to her. The men made her stand, but she could barely stay upright unless the man holding her arms kept her propped against the wall.
“Hey, aren’t you overdoing it?” “No way. This girl is just too weak.”
One of the men sounded worried about Rena’s condition, but the man gripping her arm argued back.
From their conversation, Rena realized the men had done something to her.
She first thought of drugs or pressure points, but she had no memory of being given any medicine or having anything applied to her body. She also had no recollection of anyone touching any pressure points. The only thing she could think of was feeling a strong grip on her thighs when she was being carried, but that was probably just to keep her from falling, not to drain her strength. If that was the cause, it wouldn’t explain why her power had left her before she was even picked up.
After thinking through every possibility, she arrived at one conclusion.
It was the same magic she had experienced many times recently.
“I’d heard there are people with low resistance, but I didn’t know it would work this well on someone so weak.” “Hey, take it easy. Otherwise…” “I know, I know! Just shut up for a second.” “What…?” “Alright, alright. Let’s stop arguing. For now, let’s focus on this girl.”
Just as it seemed a fight was about to break out between them, one man stepped in and calmed things down.
Seeing that the man who kept holding her arm the whole time even while arguing, Rena concluded that the magic activated through physical contact.
If that was the case, she needed to get away from his hand somehow, but without any strength in her body, there was nothing she could do. As long as he didn’t let go, her body would remain powerless indefinitely.
“Now then, young lady. Is there anything you want to say to us?”
The man speaking to her gave a signal with his eyes to the man gripping her arm. Rena felt a little strength return to her body.
Even so, she could only move her legs slightly and speak. They had probably adjusted the magic so she could talk.
“Let… me… go…” “If you spend just a little time with us, we’ll let you go right away. Okay?” “Yeah.” “Definitely.” “Look, we’re nice guys.”
Truly kind people wouldn’t drag someone into a back alley like this, nor would they call themselves nice. Rena set that obvious truth aside and searched their words for any clue that might help her escape.
“What… do I have to do…?” “What do you have to do? Wait, are you actually into this?” “Whew~, she’s eager.”
Rena desperately wanted to kick the man standing carelessly in front of her right between his spread legs, but even if she could take him down, she had no chance against the other two. She held back that urge.
Instead, she decided to play along with their words.
“You… don’t have to do this, you know…?”
Rena looked up at the man in front of her with the most pleading upward gaze she could muster.
Since the men were much larger than her to begin with, the effect was tremendous. Combined with her sweet voice and current frail state, it strongly stimulated the men’s instincts.
“Yeah, that’s true. If you’re in the mood, it’s better if we all enjoy ourselves freely.”
Once again, the man in front signaled the one holding Rena’s arm with his eyes. Remembering that strength had returned to her body after the previous signal, Rena imagined kicking all the surrounding men at the same time the moment her power came back.
Several seconds passed after the signal.
Yet her body still had no strength.
The desire to leave this place immediately made Rena anxious. Every single second felt unbearably long.
Then, something strange happened to Rena’s body.
This time, she felt even more strength draining away than before.
“Wh…y……?” “Better safe than sorry. Also, you’re misunderstanding something, young lady.”
The man in front of her crouched down. Right in front of his face was Rena’s skirt.
“We like messing with girls who can’t resist…”
The next instant, the crouched man flipped up Rena’s skirt, exposing her panties to the other men.
“Not too erotic, not too childish. This looks like a girl who’ll be fun to bully…”
As the crouched man spoke, the eyes of the surrounding men turned even more disturbingly unpleasant.
