60. The Magic Suited for Each
“Old man, I’m sure you’ve produced all kinds of results here over the years to please women in various ways, but they’re meaningless in front of my magic. No matter what knowledge or tools you have, I can completely overwhelm them with this magic of mine and just my right hand.”
I had become an existence that surpassed even the wisdom of the elves—a span of time far longer than anything I could imagine. Just thinking about it made my chest puff out with pride.
“Certainly, that’s something even I can’t do.”
“Right?”
“But isn’t the magic you need right now one that can secure your own safety?”
“…Ah.”
When I had acquired this magic, I had only thought about this magic. Nothing else had entered my mind. Because of that, I had been completely absorbed in how amazing it was and how to use it, and I had totally forgotten to learn any magic to protect myself. That explained why, whenever I was thinking about magic, I would suddenly notice the sun had already set.
“Can that magic stimulate the opponent’s weak points without touching them?”
“I don’t think so. I tried something similar, but the only thing I can do is visualize it.”
“Can you share that magic with others?”
“That’s also impossible. Besides, even if there was a way, I wouldn’t want to do it.”
“I understand what you’re trying to say, but if you stay like this, you really will die, you know?”
“I-I know that. That’s why I’m still thinking about it.”
I opened the borrowed book again—the one I thought I had finished reading—and went through it from the beginning, but every spell in it was something I couldn’t use. Even when I tried to somehow incorporate them into my visualization magic, they were all impossible to combine. If I couldn’t incorporate them, it was the same as saying I couldn’t use them.
“Oh, right. Lena can just learn magic.”
“That’s impossible.”
“Why…?”
“That girl has extremely low resistance to magic. Even weak spells affect her immediately and cause damage. When you brought her here the other day, there were still rope-like marks left on her wrists. Normally those should have disappeared long ago. Also, the magic I cast on her back then—she should have been able to stop it if she resisted even a little. But she was completely helpless. Even though I wasn’t using it strongly. That’s how low her magic resistance is.”
“If her magic resistance is low, why can’t she use magic?”
“Because she’d end up hurting herself with her own magic. It’s obvious, isn’t it?”
Now that he mentioned it, in my previous world, characters who used magic were often set to have high magic resistance. So that’s what it meant.
“That’s why I can’t teach her magic. Even if I could, it would only be things like reinforcement magic. But even those would put too much strain on her body if used too much, and she’d end up hurting herself again.”
“I see…”
I looked over at Lena, but she didn’t show any sign of being discouraged.
Well, Lena had the high physical abilities characteristic of beastmen. We could make use of that.
“So, what are you going to do in the end? I have plenty of other books I can lend you.”
“Hmm~ Nah, it’s fine.”
“What, have you already made up your mind to die?”
“It’s not that. I just feel like things will work out somehow if Lena’s with me.”
“Work out somehow? That girl has already lost once, hasn’t she?”
“Well, yeah… but I think it’ll be okay this time. I just have that feeling.”
I had no real basis for it. If I had to say anything, it was simply my trust in Lena. That was all.
I didn’t know what would happen to Lena if I died. Would she become someone else’s slave again, or would she finally become free? I didn’t know which, but for the past several days, while I had been holed up in my room, Lena had continued to watch over me.
Knowing that fact, I had come to completely trust Lena.
“I see. Then, before you die, let me teach you something good.”
“What do you mean, something good?”
“It might be a place where you can truly shine…”
With a somewhat eerie smile, the old man Roro began telling me about an event being held at a certain location.
---
“Here it is…”
Following the directions on the business card given to me by old man Roro, I walked for about thirty minutes and finally arrived at my destination.
I was standing in front of one of the largest buildings in the southern district of the city. Around the massive structure, numerous stalls and shops were lined up, and despite it being almost dusk, the area was bustling with many people.
“From here on, I’ll go alone. Lena, take these three silver coins and get something to eat while you wait.”
I handed three silver coins to Lena, who was standing beside me, and headed toward the building by myself.
At the entrance, there were about five reception windows. People were lined up, receiving what looked like tickets, and entering the building. Assuming it was some kind of admission fee, I followed suit and joined the line at the leftmost window.
One by one, people finished at the counter and entered the building. Finally, it was my turn.
“Thank you for waiting. Are you here to participate or to watch?”
“Um, here…”
I handed the receptionist the business card that old man Roro had given me. At first, the man looked at it with a puzzled expression, but the moment he flipped it over, his face changed and he suddenly became flustered.
“Please wait a moment,” he said, then quickly left his post.
While wondering what was going on, I recalled the business card I had looked at several times. On the front were the name of this building—Call Colosseum—along with its location and opening hours. The back had been blank when I first received it, but old man Roro had written something on it before handing it over. It looked like someone’s name. When I asked him whose name it was, he wouldn’t tell me, only saying that anyone connected to the Colosseum would know it. I still didn’t know whose name it was, but judging from the receptionist’s reaction, it seemed old man Roro was right—people here recognized it.
“Excuse me, sir? May I have a moment?”
After waiting a short while, a man who clearly looked like security or staff appeared—different from the previous receptionist.
“Yes? What is it?”
“May I ask what brought you here today?”
“Well, I was told that if I showed this, it would explain everything…”
“I-I see! My apologies. Miss Miarant is scheduled to fight in the fourth match today, so please wait in the VIP seats until then.”
“Huh…?”
“Here is your seat number.”
I was handed a paper with my seat number and information about today’s matches, then followed the other guests inside the building.
Once inside the venue, I saw a large boxing-ring-like stage in the center, surrounded by rows upon rows of seats. No one was on the ring yet, but it was brightly illuminated by powerful lights.
“Just what exactly is going to happen here…?”
I stood there in a daze, not understanding anything, but more and more people were coming in behind me. Not wanting to block the way, I decided to find my assigned seat.
“Number four, number four…”
The seat number I was given was four. It felt a bit ominous, but being a single-digit number actually made it feel special and impressive. As I looked around, I noticed the seats near the entrance I had entered from were numbered in the twenty-thousands. The smaller the number, the closer to the center it seemed to be.
As I walked toward the center of the venue to find my seat, I saw five special seats arranged around the ring. These seats were clearly different from the others—clearly luxurious, with small tables attached. The regular seats had numbers on the backrests, so I followed that system and eventually found my own seat.
“Found it.”
I located my seat and slowly sat down. The moment I did, I felt like my body was being gently swallowed by the seat. I sank deeper into it. It wrapped around my entire body with perfect comfort and luxury. I sat there alone, completely immersed in the feeling.
“Why is someone like you sitting here?”
A voice suddenly spoke to me from the neighboring seat.
I glanced over and saw a clearly wealthy young man—plump, dressed in expensive-looking clothes. He had the air of a spoiled young master or heir. Next to him sat a beautiful woman in a maid outfit, quietly seated in the adjacent chair. She looked exactly like the kind of maid one would imagine.
I thought talking to him would only cause trouble, so I stayed silent at first. But since he had spoken to me, I felt I should at least respond. I had just recently been targeted by assassins, so I decided it was better not to make any unnecessary enemies. Even though it was our first meeting, I answered politely.
“To be honest, I’m not really sure myself. I was told this place would be interesting, so I came…”
“You’re sitting here on your first visit?”
“Yes, well…”
“You’re an interesting guy. Which family are you from?”
“Family?”
“Yes. What else would I mean?”
“I don’t really have anything like that…”
“What? You don’t come from a notable house, yet you’re sitting here? You really are an interesting fellow… Isn’t that right, Rona?”
“Yes, Master.”
The maid quietly affirmed her master’s words. Her voice was soft but beautiful—exactly like the ideal maid we all imagine.
Damn… One day I want to have a maid like that too…
