32. Second Day in Another World
「……Customer……san……」
A voice called out from far away.
This feeling wasn’t new to me. I had experienced it several times before. If anything, it felt like I had just gone through it very recently.
「……Customer!」
Ah, right. I was sleeping, and someone was trying to wake me up.
Since I lived alone back in my old world, no one would be calling out to me like this. Which meant I was still in the other world. With that realization, I slowly opened my eyes and gathered my consciousness.
“Customer! It’s already noon!”
Fully awake now, I sat up. Repeated knocking echoed from the door of my room.
A young girl’s voice came from the other side.
“Ah… I’m up now…”
“I need to clean the room, so I’d appreciate it if you could open the door.”
“Got it. I’ll be right out.”
After letting out a big yawn, I got out of bed and opened the door.
“Good morning. You’re starting the day quite luxuriously, aren’t you?”
“Yeah. A few years ago, I never would’ve imagined this.”
“What are you talking about? Someone your age should be working much harder!”
“You’re pretty strict, Elma-chan.”
Standing in front of me with her hands on her hips and chest puffed out was Elma, a girl who had just turned twelve this year.
She was a full size smaller than me, and her chest was still modestly childlike. After seeing two women with amazing figures yesterday, I was worried that all the girls in this world might be dangerously developed, but that didn’t seem to be the case.
Setting that aside, even though she was ten years younger than me, Elma was already helping with the family business by working at the inn.
---
Yesterday, after leaving the tavern, I had completely forgotten to find a place to stay. I ran around the city in a panic, but every inn I tried was full. After asking at six different places, I finally managed to get a room here at Raft Inn.
“Come on, hurry up and go to work!”
“Yes, yes.”
Pushed out of the room by a girl who was physically weaker than me, I left the inn and stepped outside.
“Listen, Mr. Takuma. I’m going to start cleaning now, so don’t come back until the sun sets, okay?”
“You don’t have to clean my room, you know?”
“No! This is my job!”
Seeing Elma, who was barely in her teens, working with such a strong sense of duty made me—a guy in his twenties—feel like crying.
Come to think of it, before coming here, I used to think about being a good son to my parents. Watching Elma work so diligently for her family made her a role model that all the children in the world should look up to.
“Alright. Do your best with the cleaning, Elma-chan.”
“I know that without you telling me!”
Elma chased me out of the inn and disappeared toward the guest rooms.
“Still… a girl like her is probably too early for me…”
I still had low resistance to women, so I thought girls like her were still too much for me. With that in mind, I headed to that stall to get something to eat.
If my memory was correct, it wasn’t too far from here and was easy to spot along the street. Sure enough, I found the stall right away.
“Oh, if it isn’t Takuma!”
As soon as he saw me, Tong called out.
I walked over to him and greeted him back.
“Haven’t seen you since yesterday. I came as a customer today.”
“That makes me happy. What’ll it be?”
“Same thing I had yesterday, one skewer please.”
“Comin’ right up! That’ll be two copper coins.”
I handed Tong two copper coins and received the same grilled meatball skewer as yesterday in return.
“By the way, Tong. Sorry, but I still don’t have much money, so I probably won’t be able to return that silver coin I borrowed anytime soon.”
“Don’t worry about it. I gave that to you. You don’t need to return it. Besides, you’ll come back and buy more with twice the money, right? Then I’ll be the one making a profit.”
“…Thanks, man.”
“Stop that, it’s creepy.”
I bit into the skewer Tong gave me. As expected, his meatballs were delicious. I had no idea what kind of meat it was, but I felt like I could eat as many as I wanted.
“How’s it going, Takuma? Getting used to this place yet?”
“Slowly but surely.”
“It’s only been one day since yesterday. If you could get used to it in a single day, life would be easy.”
While talking to me, Tong continued diligently preparing the meat. The fragrant smell naturally reached me and stimulated my appetite.
“Hey, Tong. What counts as a feast for you guys around here?”
“A feast? Where’s this coming from all of a sudden?”
“I just want to learn a bit about the local food culture.”
“What, did you quit being an adventurer and become a scholar instead?”
“Come on, just tell me.”
While calming down the teasing Tong, I asked him about the food culture of this world.
Even though I recognized what I was eating as a “tsukune” (meatball), to Tong and the others it might just be a simple meatball.
What I was planning was to popularize foods from my original world in this one. If I could pull that off, I could become a multimillionaire overnight.
For example, if I could make and sell energy drinks, I’d become rich in no time.
The only problem was whether I actually knew how to make them. If I could, it would be a guaranteed hit. If I couldn’t, then it would all be pointless.
First, I needed to figure out what things I knew how to make that didn’t exist in this world yet.
