Chapter 56: After storm
Selene's eyes opened slowly, lashes fluttering like fallen leaves. The light filtering through the healer's hut window was soft—too soft for a world so cruel.
Her first instinct was to sit up, to move—but pain flared across her ribs like a brand. She gasped.
And then—
Cain's head snapped up from where he'd been dozing, still holding her hand.
"Selene," he breathed. "You're awake."
His voice was hoarse, eyes red-rimmed. He looked like he hadn't slept in years.
Selene gave him a lopsided smile. "You look like death."
Cain laughed—actual laughter, shaky and full of relief. "I nearly lost my heart, and you insult me first thing?"
She blinked. "You're my heart?"
He paused, eyes softening. "Yeah. Yeah, you are."
From the other side of the hut came Eren's voice: "Ugh, get a room. No—wait, stay in this room so we can keep watching you like hawks."
