Chapter 42: One Bite Was All It Took
Loraine carried her platter with utmost grace as she entered the room, being at the forefront of the chefs and cooks as she led the way. Her crimson gaze briefly wandered to the table of hungry nobles, a small smirk appearing on her face as she knew they smelled the magnificence of what she had prepared.
’I didn’t think they’d react react like THAT, but...I guess it does make me happy to see someone so excited for my cooking.’ Loraine chuckled under her breath, smiling happily. She knew it was all thanks to her [Cooking Excellence] Skill, and without it she probably wouldn’t have made anywhere as big of an impact without it.
But she was still somewhat proud of herself.
Marget turned her gaze back to Loraine and the chefs, giving them a small nod as she signaled for them to begin serving the food. Her eyes lingered on Loraine for a moment as she watched her move, the once clumsy, good-for-nothing maid had suddenly become so bold and unbothered by the presence of beings higher than her.
It was as if Loraine had undergone a whole new transformation, this sudden confidence came straight out of nowhere!
’It’s strange, but I’m beginning to feel her watching me a lot more closely. I’m aware I should be doing my best to hide my abilities for the time being, but if I really want to change this bullshit hierarchy, I’ll have to come out eventually. There’s no point in hiding these skills and suffering any longer.’
’I simply won’t allow it.’
’I just need to buy more time for myself, enough time for me to fully master these abilities of mine.’
Loraine pondered inwardly, her heart beating with her determination as she exhaled slowly, starting to place down the plates and dishes. She moved around the table, setting down forks, spoons, knifes, and providing napkins for them, however, she didn’t help them tie the napkins as she wasn’t in a position to do that, and they would most definitely take high offense to that.
’Margret would most definitely kill me if I tried to do that...and I wouldn’t dare place my hands on the neck of that bastard..’ Loraine thought inwardly, a light glare drifting towards Valmont as he still attempted to flirt with Marion.
Marion blinked, noticing the wrath radiating from Loraine as her crimson eyes was fiercely directed at Valmont, their eyes met for a moment as they both blinked in surprise, visibly taken aback by the eye contact.
Loraine quickly averted her gaze, focusing on the task at hand as she didn’t wish to insult a noble by bothering them. She moved back after all the dishes were set down and presented, the grand display of meals even more radiant than the aroma itself. It was utterly divine in all its glory.
’Am I imagining things...she was definitely glaring at Valmont, wasn’t she?’ Marion thought, her emerald gaze lingering on the white haired maiden as she watched her take a step back, standing by the wall as she stood like a statue, her expression cold and distant.
"Oh my...this..." Kain muttered in astonishment, looking down at the heavenly assortment of meals at the giant table. He was never one to be excited for food, especially during important events such as this one.
The food was merely the final act the two families would commit as they went ahead and talked about things, but tonight was an exception, he could hardly suppress himself from digging into the plate right then and there, the aroma combined with the well crafted meal made his hands twitch in anticipation.
’Did they really prepare this?’ Kain thought, his gaze lingering on the retreating faces of Loraine and the chefs as they excused themselves, walking out of the room and leaving the nobles alone with Margret.
’!!!’ Marion’s eyes drifted to the sheer deliciousness in front of her, this was rather unordinary. She had never seen dishes prepared with such care and mastery over the culinary arts, it was simply amazing to say the least.
’Did the Ashbourne’s have a [Master Chef] in their midst?’ Marion thought surprised, wondering if the family had the highest ranking class of chef one could awaken, as they were pretty rare to come by.
"As the [Sacred Maid] of the Ashbourne family, allow me to help you tie your napkins," Margret spoke with utmost sincerity, bowing gracefully before receiving a nod of approval.
She moved around the table, helping everyone tie their napkins around their neck, in order for them to not accidentally spill their food and ruin their clothing. After everyone was set, she moved her gaze to little Lilith, helping the young one tie her napkin around her neck.
"Oh!!" Lilith gasped in awe and astonishment as she lifted the lid on her plate, her heterochromia eyes shining like stars as she gazed at the sheer deliciousness of her plate.
A giant slice of pie and extra goodies awaited her, and they smelled absolutely divine, a small speck of drool escaping her lips as she couldn’t help but have her mouth watering at the sight.
Margret’s eyes widened with a burning fury, noticing the pie on Lilith’s plate, the sweet desert decorated with a little smiley face and some extra goodies on the side, a vein popping at the side of her head as she grit her teeth.
’Who the hell did this!? I’ll find out who did this and punish them dearly! How dare they neglect young Lilith’s health!?’ Margret cursed inwardly, a fierce pissed off aura radiating from her body as she moved to grab the plate, she wouldn’t stand for such insolent behavior.
Whoever pulled off this stunt was most likely a smartass who knew of Lilith’s unhealthy obsession with sweet things, they were trying to seduce the young girl with the alure of all these treats!
"Nooo!" Lilith squealed at the table, instinctively grabbing the plate as well as she didn’t want Margret taking it away. "Leave my pie! I want to eat pie!" Lilith whined. The young girl barely ate anything other than healthy meals growing up, vegetables, fruit, and the occasional protein here and there.
She was tired of it! She craved something sweet! And she needed this right now!
"Ah-!" Margret blinked in surprise as the plate was yanked from her grasp, utterly insulted at how un-lady like the young mistress had become. It was utterly rude, not becoming of the daughter of the Ashbourne family, she wanted to lash out and berate the child, but she couldn’t do that as of right now.
Everyone’s gazes were on her, watching the spectacle with stunned expressions. Kain was the first to notice the pie on the young girl’s plate, it was a rather big slice as well, his face immediately becoming irritated.
"Who-!" Kain was about to speak, to inquire about who dare give his daughter such a huge slice of pie, but was immediately stopped by Marion who quickly acted to resolve the situation.
"Let her go..." Marion spoke up, drawing everyone’s attention. "We’ve come here to celebrate Valmont and I’s engagement," Marion said, swallowing hard as the playboy’s name tasted disgusting on her tongue, but she pushed on anyway.
"Today’s a happy occasion, so let the young one enjoy something sweet for once~" She said with a smile, her words calming down the table.
"You’re right, I apologize. Today’s a good occasion, we shouldn’t let our emotions get the best of us." Kain apologized, to which Leon laughed.
"Enough talking already, let’s start eating!" He spoke, grabbing his fork and knife as he began to dig into his plate, his eyes widening with wonder as the flavor exploded on his tongue like fireworks.
Everyone began to eat their own meals, the table erupting into joyful and satisfied sounds of happiness as the foul mood that was surrounding the table was immediately lifted, the table erupting into a joyful and bright atmosphere as they had begun to converse and talk over the deliciousness of the food.
"Haha!" Leon laughed heartily, "I have to say, this is absolutely wonderful! I wasn’t expecting your family to have such great cooks, this is utterly mind-blowing!" Leon said as he leaned his arm over the table, a hearty grin on his face.
Kain was skeptical for a moment, he knew for a fact that none of his chefs had ever cooked so well before, even for them, so the fact that they suddenly pulled out something so delicious and utterly perfect in its magnitude was a surprise to him.
"Heh, well I’m glad you think so." Kain said with a grin, "I do have to admit, even I’m surprised they’ve cooked so well. Usually they never cook this well for any of the meals I’ve eaten up until now, but I guess they went all out tonight, huh?"
"No way! You’ve got to be joking!" Leon erupted in laughter.
’...’
Margret’s gaze lingered on the door to where the chefs and Loraine had left from, her form radiating silent fury as she was going to find out who had dared to sneak such a sweet delicacy for their young mistress.
And punish them dearly for it.
