Revenge Karma: She Broke Our Childhood Promise, But Her Tomboy Best-friend Saved Me.

The Architecture of the Mirror

After seeing Akane's warm smile, a sense of insecurity began to linger inside me as my mind started thinking about Kenji.

I just wanted to distract myself for one moment, but everything had returned almost instantly.

In that moment, Akane took a step closer to me, her fist still tightly clamped around the small bat charm. But as she moved, her golden eyes abruptly dropped away from my face, fixing intensely on my hands.

"Shin," she said, her tone instantly dropping into something cold and sharp. "Your hands."

I looked down at my own fingers, and my eyes widened. I hadn't even realized it, but my hands were shaking violently.

I turned my palms upward, seeing the small, deep, crescent-shaped indentations where my nails had cut into my skin during the confrontation were still raw, a faint bead of dried blood marking the white flesh.

That was the physical sign of something I couldn't control.

Akane didn't hesitate and set the keychain down on the counter, reached out, and took both of my shaking hands inside her own.

Her palms were incredibly warm, smooth, and solid, providing an immediate sense of relief.

"Tell me everything," she commanded, her golden eyes locking onto mine with an unyielding intensity. "Word for word, Shin. Don't hide a single syllable from me."

I took a deep, steadying breath, the scent of her clearing the remaining smoke of the hallway from my lungs. And I told her.

I detailed the entire interaction with Kenji.

I told her about his passive-aggressive threats of violence, his smug arrogance, and the calculated low blows he had thrown to shatter my sanity.

I told her everything he had revealed about Kurone—the months of secret text messages, the clandestine hookups behind my back, and even the way they had openly mocked the childhood pinky promise I had spent seven years protecting like a holy relic.

As I spoke, I felt Akane's grip on my hands tighten, her fingers locking around mine with a strength that was almost painful, transferring her own stability into my system.

Then, I reached the final sequence of the conversation, and my voice faltered for a fraction of a second, a cold, protective rage tightening my vocal cords.

"He brought you into it at the end," I whispered, my eyes fixed on our joined hands. "He told me that I was a fool for running straight to you. He called you a snake, Akane. He said you were completely insane, that you've been manipulating and using people since middle school, and that I would find out soon enough just how 'evil' you really are."

The rhythmic movement of Akane's thumbs against the back of my hands stopped instantly, and the kitchen became entirely, terrifyingly quiet.

Akane slowly lowered her head, her black hair falling forward like a dark curtain, concealing her face from the warm light.

For a long, agonizing moment, she didn't draw a breath. She stayed perfectly still, a silent statue in the middle of my kitchen.

When she finally lifted her head back up to look at me, the expression on her face made my breath catch. The fierce, protective fire was gone, replaced by a flat, clinical, chillingly controlled mask.

"Shin... I'll be honest with you, because you deserve truth and someone you can trust, so I'm gonna say it even though I didn't want to," she said, her voice dropping into a quiet, heavy monotone that sounded entirely devoid of life.

In that moment, my mind thought of the worst possible scenarios. I felt my heart skipping a beat, in a negative way.

Akane then took a heavy breath and spoke. "Kenji is... my brother," she said, squeezing my hand tighter.

The world around me came to an absolute, screeching halt. The ticking of the clock vanished.

"What?" I stammered, my brain completely failing to process the syllables.

"My half-brother. Biologically," she continued, her voice remaining eerily flat, completely controlled. "He is the son of my father and the woman he kept as his lover for years. Kenji was born exactly six months before me. My father recognized him immediately and brought him into the family circle. But my mother... my mother never accepted his existence. She hated him. She hated what he represented."

Her left hand slid out of mine, her fingers nervously picking at the raw hem of my black t-shirt.

"Then, as he grew up, my mother also started to cherish him, because my father stopped cheating on her. And since then, they have always poured every single ounce of their expectations, their pride, and their resources into him. He was the golden boy. The male heir. The favorite. I was just... the inconvenient daughter of the woman who had been cheated on. A daily reminder of a broken marriage."

She paused, taking a slow, shallow breath.

"He has spent his entire life actively hating me, Shin. Because, despite all the money they threw at him, I was always better than him. I was smarter. My grades were perfect. The instructors at the music academy preferred my playing over his. The teachers at school respected me, even if they were terrified of me. No matter how hard he tried to be the alpha, he was always standing in my shadow. He was second best, and he hated that."

Akane then reached into her pocket and pulled out her smartphone. Her fingers moved across the screen with a practiced speed before she extended the device toward me.

On the screen was a digital gallery of old, archived family photographs.

I glanced down where I saw younger Akane—a fierce, unsmiling girl with long black hair—standing stiffly next to a teenage Kenji.

In every single image, the boy's expression wasn't just bored or arrogant; it dripped with a visible, burning hostility.

In one photo, his hand was blurry, caught in the act of deliberately shoving her shoulder away from the center of the frame.

"There's the forensic evidence," she said, her voice carrying a sharp, defensive edge. "In case you think I'm spinning a fantasy to keep your loyalty."

I didn't look at the rest of the photos. I reached out, gently pushed her phone hand down, and looked directly into her golden eyes.

"I don't need evidence, Akane," I said, my voice solid and unwavering. "I don't need a single photograph. I have never doubted your word, and I never will."

In truth, I really needed that. I really wanted to be reassured, and Akane already knew it.

Akane's chest heaved as she drew in a deep, shaky breath, her eyes widening slightly at my absolute lack of hesitation.

She then put her phone away, with her shoulders dropping a fraction of an inch.

"Now, I'll tell you something more, Shin," Akane said, gently caressing my cheek. "I know you probably won't like it, but you still deserve the truth."

I swallowed some saliva and nodded.

"He didn't target Kurone because he actually loved her, Shin," she whispered, the ugly truth finally laid bare between us. "He targeted her because she was the most popular, visible girl in our year. He knew she was your anchor. But more importantly, he knew she was my closest associate from middle school. He wanted to humiliate me. He wanted to prove to himself, and to our parents, that he could take whatever he wanted from my world. Kurone wasn't a partner to him. She was just a trophy to display on his shelf to prove his dominance over my shadow."

"And Kurone?" I asked, a cold weight settling in my stomach. "Did she know about any of this? Did she know he was your brother?"

"I don't know," Akane admitted honestly, her eyes drifting to the window. "And frankly, I don't give a shit anymore. She made her choices. They deserve each other."

"I guess so..." I sighed.

I stood there, absorbing the structural reality of the deception that had surrounded my life for months.

The pieces of the puzzle finally clicked into place, creating a picture infinitely more disgusting than I had imagined.

"I didn't expect her to be so entirely... vile," I said, my voice heavy with a bitter, exhausted resonance. "Kenji told me everything, Akane. He told me that she didn't give me a single thought. He explicitly told me that she was in his bed, sleeping with him, while I was sitting on this porch waiting for her text messages. Everything actually makes me angrier than I want to admit."

Akane watched me and just stayed quiet, letting my anger exist in the space between us.

"Did you know?" I asked suddenly, the question escaping my lips before I could rationalize it. I looked at her intensely. "Did you know they were sleeping together before Valentine's Day?"

Akane met my gaze with an unblinking, almost brutal clarity. Her face didn't falter.

"Shin," she said, her voice dropping into a calm, steady cadence. "Does it actually matter to you right now? If you know the exact date she started lying to you, what does that fundamentally alter about your present?"

The question hit me like a physical blow to the chest, stopping my breath.

"Think about it logically," she continued, taking a step closer until her bare toes were almost touching my uniform shoes. "If I stand here and tell you that I knew about them, you will feel a sudden, rational wave of anger toward me for keeping the secret, even though we didn't talk that much before the rooftop event. If I tell you that I was completely oblivious, you will transfer that anger onto yourself, torturing your brain for failing to see the obvious warning signs around you for months."

She reached up, both of her warm palms cupping my jawline, forcing my head up until I was forced to look directly into the golden depths of her eyes.

"The timeline doesn't matter, ghost boy. The damage is already a historical fact. Kurone chose to manipulate you. She chose to violate your trust, to sit in a room and laugh about your childhood promise with a man who wanted to hurt me. She executed those choices entirely on her own."

Her voice softened, dropping into a tender, smoky purr that wrapped around my frayed nerves like silk.

"There is absolutely no answer I can give you regarding the past that will rewrite the reality of what they did. The only thing that matters is what you choose to do with the space you have now."

I closed my eyes, letting the heavy warmth of her palms ground me, and the residual fury, the toxic curiosity, the burning need to understand the mechanics of the betrayal—all of it simply dissolved under the pressure of her hands. She was right. She was always right.

"I know," I whispered into the quiet of the kitchen. "I know."

I opened my eyes, looking directly into her amber irises.

"But don't misunderstand me, Akane. I don't want her back. I don't want a single piece of that old life. I have you now, and I wouldn't trade the reality of what we built last night for anything in this entire world."

I reached up, covering her hands with my own, our fingers interlocking against my jawline.

"But I absolutely despise the fact that I was treated like a joke for all these years. I hate that they stood in the dark and laughed at my expense while I was destroying myself to keep her safe." My grip tightened. "And, more than anything... the thing I hated the most and made me snat was the fact that he spoke about you in that way. I hate that he used his mouth to call you a snake."

"Shin..." she murmured, her eyes softening until they were completely liquid gold.

"It doesn't matter," I said fiercely, leaning forward until our foreheads pressed together in the middle of the kitchen. "He's gone. They're gone. You're standing right here with me inside my house. That is the only reality that carries any weight for me right now."

Akane stared at me through the short distance between our faces, her eyes shimmering with an intense, beautiful light that completely stripped away the last of her defenses.

"That was exactly the answer I needed to hear, Ghost boy," she whispered against my lips.

She rose onto her tiptoes, her hands sliding from my jaw to lock firmly behind my neck. She then pulled my face down and kissed me with a slow, deep, incredibly deliberate kiss, filled with an overwhelming, silent gratitude.

I could feel that she poured every single ounce of her trust, her relief, and her newborn love into the movement of her lips against mine.

I opened my mouth beneath hers, tasting the hot, sweet reality of her, my hands automatically finding her waist to pull her closer.

When she finally pulled back just a fraction of an inch, her eyes remained closed, her long eyelashes brushing against her skin.

"I love you, Shin, and I've done that for seven years," she murmured, the confession floating between our lips like a sacred vow. "Don't you ever dare forget that."

My chest felt as though it had physically exploded, a violent surge of pure, unadulterated joy rushing through my veins.

"I won't," I swore fiercely. "I never will."

Before she could even open her eyes, I reached down, caught her beneath her thighs, and lifted her completely off the kitchen floor.

A sharp, high-pitched gasp of pure surprise tore from her throat, but she didn't protest.

Her arms instantly tightened around my neck, and her bare legs wrapped securely around my waist to lock herself against my chest.

I walked two steps backward and adagied her gently onto the edge of the smooth induction stovetop counter.

She sat on the black glass surface, her knees parted around my hips, her hands remaining tightly intertwined behind my neck.

Her golden eyes were wide, glittering with a dangerous, dark playfulness in the kitchen's dim light.

"S-Shin..." she whispered, her voice dropping into a smoky, breathless purr that made the blood roar in my ears. I loved her voice.

I leaned forward, my chest pressing against hers, my lips ghosting over the sensitive skin right beneath her ear.

My hand slid up the soft cotton of my black t-shirt she was wearing, my palm mapping the hot, toned curve of her ribcage.

The friction between our bodies was a physical command, and every single cell in my body was screaming for her.

It was going to happen right there on the counter. I wanted her so much.

And then...

DING DONG.

The loud, piercing, shrill ring of the front doorbell exploded through the quiet hallway, cutting through the heavy atmosphere of the kitchen like a physical blade.

Both of us froze instantly, our muscles locking in place.

Akane let out a long, deeply frustrated sigh, letting her forehead fall forward to rest heavily against my shoulder. "You have got to be kidding me," she murmured into my uniform blazer.

DING DONG.

And in that moment, my body felt a shiver...
