Revenge Karma: She Broke Our Childhood Promise, But Her Tomboy Best-friend Saved Me.

Return

The streetlights of the city bled into the dark. Red, blue, green—I didn't care. I just ran.

My experience of earlier was enough to make my blood boil to the point I couldn't fe the cold.

I was walking fast—no, I was moving with a desperate, frantic energy that sat somewhere between a run and a march.

My lungs burned with the intake of the frigid winter air, each breath a sharp, crystalline reminder that I was still alive, despite the fact that I felt like a hollowed-out carcass.

Moreover, my mind was a complete mess.

Every few seconds, the echo of Kurone's laughter would drill into the back of my skull—that high-pitched, tinkling sound that used to be my favorite melody, now transformed into a jagged shard of glass.

Once a sound that made my heart warm, now a sound that made my heart squeeze in pain.

The gold ring, the weight of the money I had laid on that wooden tray at the café, and the patronizing palm of Kenji on my shoulder…

The humiliation was a physical thing.

I wanted to scream until my vocal cords shredded and tear off my own skin because it felt like it was covered in the invisible grime of her fake "goodness."

But beneath the rage, there was a magnetic pull.

I wasn't thinking about where I was going. I didn't need to.

My body had memorized the route to Akane's apartment with a terrifying, subconscious precision.

It was as if my nervous system had mapped out the coordinates of the only place where the air didn't taste like lies.

I navigated the turns, the narrow alleyways, and the crowded crossings without a single moment of hesitation. My mind had flagged that building, that fourth-floor sanctuary, as the only coordinate for survival.

The walk was an exorcism. With every step away from the Café de Rose, a piece of the "old Shin" was being left behind on the cold pavement.

The boy who waited for seven years was dying in the gutters of Tokyo, and the man walking toward the sandalwood scent was something else entirely—something colder, something that carried something deep behind his eyes.

When I finally reached the building, I didn't even stop to catch my breath.

I just took the stairs two at a time, my heart slamming against my ribs like a trapped bird, and by the time I reached the fourth floor, I was gasping, my vision tunneling.

I reached apartment 402, and I noticed that the door was already ajar.

A sliver of amber light spilled out into the hallway, a warm, inviting glow that promised the end of the storm.

I pushed the door open, my hands trembling.

As I thought, Akane was there.

She was standing in the center of the living room, framed by the shadows and the flickering city lights behind her.

She didn't say a word. Not even asking what had happened.

She probably didn't need to.

All she did was just opening her arms—a silent, absolute invitation.

In that moment, I didn't hesitate.

I stumbled forward, the last of my strength evaporating the moment I crossed the threshold. I fell into her, my body colliding with hers with a force that sent a jolt through my entire frame.

I wrapped my arms around her hips, my fingers digging into the fabric of her shirt, pressing against the firm, lean line of her ribs.

She was… warm.

I pulled her flush against me, a desperate, possessive grip that sought to anchor me to the earth.

My hands moved upward, tracing the curve of her waist, my palms feeling the rhythmic rise and fall of her breathing, feeling the individual ribs beneath the skin—delicate, strong, and real.

Akane's arms came up around my neck, her fingers tangling in the hair at the nape of my neck, pulling me closer.

I buried my face in the crook of her neck, my forehead resting against the warm skin of her chest.

The scent of her was a sensory assault.

It was sandalwood, old leather, the faint metallic tang of guitar strings, and a deep, musky cedar.

It was intoxicating.

I inhaled her, my lungs expanding as if I were breathing for the first time in a decade. I wanted to disappear into the skin of her neck and fuse my bones with hers until the memory of Kurone was nothing but a ghost story.

"Good boy... you've done so well…" she whispered to my ear.

Her voice was a low, vibrating rasp that resonated through my skull.

Then, Akane began to stroke my head, her fingers moving in slow, rhythmic circles against my scalp.

The effect was instantaneous.

The tension that had been coiling in my muscles for hours began to dissolve.

The rage, the humiliation, the bone-deep sadness—it all began to ebb away, replaced by a strange, heavy warmth.

Every touch of her calloused fingers felt like a needle drawing out the poison.

I let out a long, shuddering sigh, my weight slumping against her, my grip on her ribs tightening as if I were afraid she might dissolve into the shadows.

I could feel Akane's body twitching against mine. A sharp intake of breath. Her nails dug into my back.

"You're shaking," she murmured, her breath warm against my ear, but her voice was shaking too.

"I... I hate them," I choked out, my voice muffled by her shirt. "I hate her, Akane. I hate everything I was."

"Good," she replied, her voice hardening with a dark satisfaction. "Hate is a much better fuel than hope. It's cleaner, and it burns brighter."

She continued to stroke my hair for a long time, letting the silence of the sanctuary wrap around us.

The only sounds were the distant hum of the city and the rhythmic ticking of the rain against the windowpane.

In that moment, I wanted to stay glued to her forever.

But then, the stroking stopped.

Akane pulled back just enough so she could look at me. She didn't let go of my neck, but she shifted her hands, her fingers sliding down to grip the line of my jaw and the side of my neck.

Her touch was firm, almost forceful. She tilted my head up, forcing me to break the safety of her chest and look her in the eyes. Our lips were only inches apart, and her golden gaze was wide, dilated, and intensely focused. In the amber light, she looked predatory, a wolf watching the moon.

She was… beautiful. But just when I was about to lean closer—

"You still smell like her, Shin," she whispered, her eyes raking over my face.

A flash of disgust crossed her features, a sharp, genuine revulsion that made my heart skip a beat.

"The scent of that vanilla... that fake, floral rot. It's clinging to your skin, Shin. It's on your clothes. It's in your hair. Even after everything, her ghost is back into my house."

I tried to speak, to apologize, but her grip on my mandible tightened—not enough to hurt, but enough to demand absolute attention.

Her lips parted, and for a second, I thought she was going to kiss me.

Her eyes flickered down to my mouth, then back up. Her breathing changed—faster, shallower.

But… she didn't move.

Instead, she closed her eyes, and when she opened them again, the control was back.

"I won't have it," she hissed. Her thumb traced the line of my lower lip, her touch feeling like a brand. "I won't have a single molecule of her left on you. You're going to purge her, right now."

The tension in the room suddenly spiked, thick and suffocating. It wasn't the chaste, awkward tension of a high school hallway. It was something older, something darker. It was the tension of a ritual about to begin.

She leaned in, her lips inches from mine. I could see the silver glint of her piercings and the faint, blue-white flame reflected in her pupils.

"Go to the bathroom," she commanded, her voice dropping to a low, intimate register that made my blood boil. "The water is already heating up. I've prepared a change of clothes for you—real clothes. Not that pathetic uniform."

She let go of my jaw, her fingers sliding down my chest, trailing a path of heat across the fabric of my blazer.

"Scrub until the water runs clear of her," she whispered. "And when you're done... when you finally smell like yourself again..."

She leaned in closer, her lips ghosting over my ear.

"...come immediately to my bedroom. Don't make me wait, Shin. I'm starting to lose my patience."

She stepped back then, her eyes never leaving mine, and then she pointed toward the hallway, a silent, absolute command.

I stood there for a second, my chest heaving, the "static" in my head replaced by a singular, focused drive. I didn't feel like a person anymore. I felt like a satellite being pulled into the orbit of a black hole, and I was more than ready to be consumed.

"Yes, Akane," I whispered.

I turned and walked toward the bathroom without looking back, feeling her golden eyes on my spine. A possessive, heavy gaze that felt like a cloak.

The bathroom was already filled with steam.

The scent of peppermint and cedar was thick in the air, a sharp, clinical contrast to the vanilla rot I carried on my clothes.

I stripped off the school uniform with a frantic, violent energy. I tore the blazer off, unbuttoned the shirt until the buttons strained, and kicked the trousers into the corner like they were pieces of infected meat.

I stood naked in front of the mirror for a moment. My skin was pale, my ribs showing, my eyes wide and haunted. But the blue-white flame was still there, flickering in the depths of my pupils.

I stepped into the shower.

The water was scalding, nearly at the point of pain, but I welcomed it. I wanted to erase every single trace of Kurone from me.

I grabbed the peppermint soap and began to scrub. I scrubbed my arms, my chest, my neck—everywhere her scent might be lingering.

I wanted to wash away the seven years of devotion and the boy who believed in pinky promises.

But suddenly, while water was flowing on my body, an intrusive question slipped into my mind, for a split second.

"Why is this happening so fast…?" I asked myself.

But in that moment, I pretended not to care, and kept washing my body, sending this question to the edge of my consciousness.

I stayed under the spray until my skin was a deep, angry red, until the steam was so thick I could barely breathe.

When I finally stepped out, I felt light. I felt new.

On the counter sat a pile of clothes: a pair of black, fitted trousers and a dark, silk-like shirt that felt cool against my skin.

I dressed slowly, my movements deliberate. The fabric felt like a second skin, a uniform for the man I was becoming.

I walked out of the bathroom. The apartment was quiet, the record on the turntable having reached its end, the needle clicking softly against the inner groove.

Then, after taking a deep breath, I headed toward the bedroom.

The door was slightly ajar. I pushed it open.

The room was bathed in a deep, crimson light from a series of smart bulbs Akane had installed.

The scent of sandalwood was overwhelming here, mixed with a faint, metallic tang.

Akane was sitting on the edge of the large bed, her back to me.

She had taken off her boots. Her bare feet rested on the dark rug. She was still in her black lace bra, her skin luminous in the red glow, the tattoos on her back looking like ancient symbols carved into marble.

She didn't turn around when I entered.

"Are you clean, Shin?" she asked. Her voice was a low, dangerous purr.

"Yes," I said, my voice steady. "She's gone."

Akane turned then. Her golden eyes raked over me, taking in the new clothes, the red flush of my skin, and the clarity in my gaze. A slow, dark smirk spread across her lips.

"Good," she said, patting the space on the bed next to her. "Come here. It's time to start the real work."

I walked toward her, the floorboards cool beneath my feet.

As I sat down next to her, the heat of her body felt like a physical force.

She reached out, her fingers sliding under the collar of my new shirt, her touch possessive and certain.

The era of the childhood friend wasn't just over. It had been erased. And as I looked into Akane's golden eyes, I realized that I didn't want to be saved.

I wanted to be hers, at least in that moment.

"Finally," she whispered, her hand sliding up to the nape of my neck, pulling me toward her.

And as the city lights flickered outside the window, I let the darkness of the sanctuary consume me entirely.
