Chapter 128: The First Avenger
"We found Captain America."
Coulson's voice carried clearly through the secure connection. The recovery team had reached the Valkyrie's fuselage and expected to remove Steve Rogers from the ice shortly.
"Director Fury wants Romanoff on site," Coulson added. "This is now a highly classified S.H.I.E.L.D. recovery."
Ethan opened a portal to the Sanctum first.
Gwen collected her repaired suit and stepped through, leaving the S.H.I.E.L.D. operation to Natasha.
Ethan closed the gateway and opened another inside the Arctic command tent.
Natasha checked her sidearm and stepped toward the glowing ring.
"Are you coming?"
"S.H.I.E.L.D. has engineers, doctors, and several hundred employees for a reason," Ethan answered casually.
He closed the portal the moment Natasha stepped through.
Cold air rushed through the command tent before the portal closed, making several nearby technicians look up from their monitors.
Natasha found Coulson standing near the primary monitors, watching the excavation feeds. He was visibly invested in the operation, his posture tighter than usual, but he remained strictly professional.
S.H.I.E.L.D.'s excavation specialists cut through the ice and opened the damaged fuselage.
Steve Rogers was pulled from the wreckage. His shield was recovered separately and locked inside a padded transit case.
A team of doctors immediately transferred Steve into a specialized, temperature-controlled medical shell. He was pale and completely unresponsive, but the medical readouts confirmed the impossible.
Captain America was alive, but deeply unconscious.
Coulson watched the final seal lock into place on the medical shell. He sent a Level Seven confirmation to headquarters, attaching the initial medical report and the planned route to the secured airstrip.
The excavation camp was situated over a mile away from the heavy transport aircraft capable of carrying the medical equipment.
Once Steve was stabilized, the team loaded the medical shell into one of three identical armored snow carriers. Only Coulson, Natasha, the doctors, and the drivers knew which vehicle held him.
Natasha rode in the back of the medical carrier with Coulson and two trauma doctors.
The heavy tracks crunched steadily over the frozen terrain. Coulson kept his eyes on the snowy expanse visible through the small reinforced window.
"Very few people knew we had actually narrowed down the grid," Coulson said quietly over the rumble of the engine.
Natasha watched the monitors tracking Steve's vitals. "Fury kept the operation limited because of the internal audit. He didn't want the search broadcasted until you actually had the target."
The route was routine for the first ten minutes.
A buried charge erupted beneath the lead vehicle's front track.
The heavy transport slewed sideways across the route, throwing snow across the convoy and forcing the medical carrier to brake sharply.
Static swallowed the radio.
"Comms are down," the driver shouted. "We're being jammed."
Thick, unnatural white smoke poured over the convoy, blending perfectly with the snow and completely erasing their visibility.
The attackers ignored the disabled lead vehicle and moved directly through the smoke toward the medical carrier. They knew exactly which transport held Steve.
Natasha kicked the rear doors open.
She dropped a white-clad assailant with two rapid shots from her standard Glock, then drew the Plumber sidearm with her left hand. A sharp pulse of blue alien energy cut through the smoke, catching a second attacker in the chest and throwing him backward into a snowbank.
Coulson pulled the remaining agents into a defensive line around the carrier. They fired toward movement in the smoke and forced the attackers to approach through the narrow space between the disabled vehicles.
The moment the assault team realized S.H.I.E.L.D. was entrenched and a quick extraction was no longer possible, they broke contact. They withdrew through the smoke toward two snow vehicles waiting beyond the ridge. By the time the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents cleared the carrier, both vehicles were already disappearing into the storm.
The smoke began to clear, carried away by the freezing wind.
Natasha and Coulson stood near the rear of the medical carrier, examining the aftermath. The S.H.I.E.L.D. agents were securing the perimeter, pulling the crew from the disabled lead vehicle.
"They knew the search location," Natasha said, holstering the Plumber sidearm. "They knew the convoy route, and they moved less than twenty minutes after your confirmation reached headquarters."
Coulson pulled his encrypted datapad from his coat. The screen was still attempting to bypass the localized jamming.
"The final route and the extraction confirmation were sent only to headquarters," Coulson said, his voice hard. "Under Level Seven clearance."
Natasha looked at him. "Who accessed it?"
Coulson checked the digital receipt attached to his report.
The list was incredibly short. It contained Nick Fury, Maria Hill, and a tiny handful of senior S.H.I.E.L.D. directorate officials.
Coulson looked at Natasha.
"They were waiting for confirmation," Natasha said.
Someone inside S.H.I.E.L.D. had known about the Arctic search beforehand, monitored the secure channels, and given the assault team the final signal the exact second Captain America was pulled from the ice.
The convoy limped the rest of the way to the airstrip. Steve Rogers was safely loaded onto the heavy transport aircraft, surrounded by an expanded security detail.
Thousands of miles away, inside the secure levels of the Triskelion, Nick Fury stood with his hands planted on his desk.
Maria Hill stood beside him, reading Coulson's after-action report.
Ethan's warning had already pushed Fury into quietly auditing S.H.I.E.L.D. He had found missing weapons, phantom accounts, and recruitment orders no one admitted approving.
Now someone had used Level Seven information to attack a live operation.
Fury typed a series of commands into his private terminal, completely bypassing the standard S.H.I.E.L.D. logistics network. He changed the transport aircraft's final destination, burying the new coordinates off the books.
Hill watched the encrypted orders process. She looked down at the short list of senior officials who had accessed Coulson's initial confirmation report.
"How do you plan to identify the leak?" Hill asked.
Fury kept his eye fixed on the names.
"Give each of them a different destination."
