Marvel: Starting with Dumbledore's Template at Kamar-Taj

Chapter 121: Thread, Shield, and Uru

The next morning, Mason's recovered receiver sat deactivated on the Sanctum's central training table, resting quietly beside the sleek, matte-black casing of Natasha's Plumber sidearm.

The overnight scan had confirmed several short-range connections, but none had remained active long enough to reveal a location. Ethan had saved the signal records and deactivated the receiver until they could compare them against the Fisk vans' routes.

A few feet away, Natasha stood in the center of the wooden floor, wearing her new dimensional training bracers. Until now, every Widow Thread she formed had tried to cut through whatever it touched. Today, Ethan wanted her to control what it did.

"Intent dictates the shape," Ethan told her, pacing slowly around the perimeter of the room.

Natasha focused on the heavy, disabled pistol barrel clamped to a nearby stand. She drew a measured breath. The bracers hummed faintly, regulating the ambient magic flowing into her hands. A razor-thin Widow Thread snapped into existence. With a sharp flick of her wrist, she whipped the thread forward. It sliced cleanly through the steel barrel, dropping the severed half to the floor.

"Good. Now change the tension," Ethan instructed.

She formed a second thread, casting it across the room to wrap around a heavy iron key resting on a stool. Instead of slicing it, she held the magic steady and pulled. The key dragged across the floor toward her. The thread held its form for four seconds before trembling and dissolving into orange sparks.

Natasha flexed her fingers. The bracers had stopped the magic from burning her skin, but they had not removed the strain of holding it together.

"Now bind," Ethan said.

Natasha turned her attention to the heavy wooden wrists of a training dummy. She cast the thread, looping it in a rapid figure-eight motion. But the moment the glowing wire tightened, she pulled too aggressively. The thread shattered instantly, unable to handle the sudden, crushing tension.

From the couch, Gwen let out a low whistle. "A little tight, don't you think?"

Natasha didn't turn her head. She formed a short, dying spark of a thread and whipped it sideways, cleanly snatching Gwen's spare web-shooter right off the armrest of the couch and catching it in her left hand.

Gwen raised her wrist and fired a short burst of webbing at the floor, pinning Natasha's meditation cushion to the wooden boards.

"Give it back," Ethan said, looking at Natasha. He then pointed toward the webbed cushion. "And get that off the floor before it dries."

Natasha returned the web-shooter while Gwen pulled the webbing from the cushion. Once both were finished, Ethan stepped into the center of the room.

"We're moving to the Eldritch Guard," Ethan said. "Not the full shield. Start with a patch over your forearm and hold it long enough to take one hit."

He demonstrated, forming a small, hand-sized patch of golden light over his left forearm. Natasha mirrored his stance. She drew the energy through the bracers, forcing the chaotic orange sparks to flatten and bind together over her arm.

A fragile, semi-translucent orange disc flickered into existence.

Ethan tapped it with a harmless, low-powered training bolt.

The orange shield shattered like glass, immediately dispersing into the air.

Natasha lowered her arm, her expression entirely unbothered by the failure. "Do it again."

By early afternoon, Ethan stepped through a portal into the New Mexico desert, carrying the heavy case containing the Plumber Multispectrum Analyzer.

The S.H.I.E.L.D. encampment had grown, with more barricades and floodlights surrounding the crater. Tony Stark was waiting inside the mobile lab, surrounded by his own Merlinbreaker sensor arrays.

Ethan unpacked the Plumber scanner and set it on the workbench. Tony immediately began connecting the alien scanner to the Merlinbreaker system.

"Alright," Tony muttered, tapping rapidly on a transparent holographic screen. "Let's see what the magic rock is actually hiding."

Ethan already knew the basics. Mjolnir was made from Uru, Odin had enchanted it, and the hammer judged who could wield it. The scanner was for everything the films had never explained: how the runes carried power through the metal, what traces the Bifrost had left behind, and whether Tony could learn anything useful without damaging the weapon.

The first scan produced a layered image of the hammer rather than a complete blueprint. Tony connected the analyzer's readings to Merlinbreaker and studied the overlapping lines.

"The enchantment isn't sitting on top of the metal," Tony said after a moment. "It runs through the entire hammer. Remove the so-called lock and you ruin the weapon with it."

"So there's no simple bypass," Ethan said.

Tony glanced at him. "There's always a bypass. This one just happens to involve destroying the thing we're trying to study."

The lab door opened, and Thor walked in with Maria Hill and two S.H.I.E.L.D. agents. He looked briefly at the glowing image of Mjolnir before turning toward the crater window.

"Is my father's enchantment still there?" Thor asked.

Ethan checked the analyzer. "Nothing has changed."

Thor stared at the hammer. His hand tightened at his side, and for a moment, it looked like he might walk back into the crater and try again.

He stopped himself.

"Then I will wait for someone from Asgard," Thor said.

He stepped away from the window without touching the hammer.

Ethan saved the completed scan. Between the Plumber analyzer and Merlinbreaker, they now had usable readings of the Uru, the rune layers, and the Bifrost residue around the hammer.

Tony immediately opened a second copy of the data.

"Controlled access," Ethan reminded him.

"You brought an alien scanner into my lab and expected self-control?" Tony asked.

Before Tony could continue, the Plumber analyzer gave a sharp alert.

The image of Mjolnir vanished from the main screen. In its place appeared the old Bifrost residue surrounding the crater. A second pattern briefly formed over it, then faded before it could complete.

Tony leaned toward the screen. "That wasn't there five minutes ago."

The pattern appeared again several seconds later. It followed the same shape before breaking apart at the final stage.

Thor stepped closer to the monitor. "The Bifrost."

"Someone is trying to establish a route to Midgard," Ethan said.

Thor continued staring at the fading pattern. "Then Asgard has not forgotten me."
