"Now that he's gone, and John Lopez is his only direct disciple, even if John makes a mistake, we don't have the authority to punish him. Only the head of the Sect can make that call."
Her voice carried a mix of respect and emotion. If any trouble came from this, she could just hand it over to the Sect Leader—less risk, less stress.
And honestly, she wasn't lying.
Zack Lance was gone.
Only, "gone" didn't mean dead—it meant he had finally left the Cinnabar Tower and stepped outside the Alps Mountain to enjoy a life he never had. After guarding the tower for decades, he'd finally met his destined successor. With his mission complete, the man deserved a few carefree days.
But the word "gone" was just vague enough to confuse Violet, which was exactly what Nancy intended.
Mr. Yancy silently applauded her. No wonder Nancy was known as the sharpest elder in the Cinnabar Sect—she knew how to spin a story.
"If anything happens, we'll just let the Sect Leader handle it," she said again.
Mr. Yancy quickly added, "Yes, that's the situation. Only a few of us even knew Zack had left. I—just received the news myself."
That explained the inconsistency in his previous statements.
Under normal circumstances, if Zack was still guarding the tower and his disciple broke the rules, punishment would be warranted. But now that Zack had "passed," punishing his only disciple right away would seem heartless—disrespectful even.
