As the saying goes, achieving fame in youth can often lead to arrogance.
Especially at John's age, when two monumental halos hung above his head, a bit of arrogance might seem almost expected, even natural.
But this was John.
Despite his exceptional status, he remained calm and modest, unaffected by the weight of his achievements. He never sought to show off or flaunt his titles. Even when Hugh suggested he could easily leverage his position as the Master of Clouds, John purposefully dodged the opportunity.
It wasn't out of sentimentality. John simply saw no need to boast.
Hugh, having witnessed this countless times, understood. If it weren't for the pressing need to treat his daughter, Lucilla, on the spot, John would likely never reveal his identity as the renowned magic doctor of New York.
This mindset was baffling to Hugh. In his experience, most people in John's position would be eager to bask in the glow of their accomplishments. Yet John seemed to view these dual roles—the magic doctor and the Master of Clouds—as inconsequential, at least when compared to what he likely considered far more important matters.
Hugh thought he understood John well, but after today's conversation, he realized how little he truly knew about him.
John, however, remained oblivious to Hugh's musings and cares little about his assumptions.
