Reborn: The Rookie Detective

Chapter 82 82: 82-Decieved

But he had always envied Hannah's Ford Mustang Shelby GT500. Whenever the sweet girl drove that muscle car with the cobra emblem around town, it always attracted countless stares.

"How about finding me an old classic muscle car?"

Men can't be without money; once they have it, they get restless. Jack hadn't even gotten his money yet, and he was already thinking about playing with cars.

Now he had accumulated a bunch of life skills; he might not be quite good at modifying cars, but getting an old muscle car and repairing it himself shouldn't be a problem.

After all, he was reborn in America, and he was about to have a little money. If he didn't get a genuine high-horsepower muscle car to play with, he would feel like something was missing, especially since gas was so cheap here.

Nolan acknowledged: "Two weeks at most, I'll definitely satisfy you."

About an hour later, the operating room door finally opened, and the two rushed forward.

"The patient hasn't shown any internal bleeding yet, but he still needs to be monitored. The leg surgery is complete, and he should wake up in about half an hour. However, given that he may have a mild concussion, I don't recommend you question him for an extended period."

As Carrie spoke, she noticed Nolan beside her. Although half her face was covered by a mask, the smile lines at the corners of her eyes betrayed her current mood.

"I just need to look after him; I don't need to ask him any questions." Seeing that there was no one else in the midst of their entangled gazes, Jack gave up explaining further and helped the nurse push the still-anesthetized Alejandro Mesia into the ward.

Caring for a patient is exhausting, especially a criminal, and Jack dared not be careless. His recently filled stomach made him a little sleepy, so he could only get up and pace back and forth in the ward.

After an unknown amount of time, Alejandro Mesia on the bed let out a low groan and woke up.

"Where am I?"

"You're in the hospital, Mr. Mesia." Jack hurriedly came to the bedside, reached out and pressed him down, signaling him not to move.

"You just had surgery on your left leg. The doctor said you might have a mild concussion."

Mesia was still a little confused. "Who are you? How do you know my real name?"

Jack's heart skipped a beat. His worst fear had come true. Had he really lost his memory?

"I rescued you from two assassins. Remember? You accidentally fell off the overpass, and I took you to the hospital."

Mesia groaned again, clutching his forehead.

"Sorry, I'm still a little fuzzy. You said before that you were sent by Manager Ray."

Jack breathed a sigh of relief. At least he hadn't lost his memory.

"Ray King commissioned me to find you and provide protection. He should be on a plane to LA by now."

"We have to get out of the hospital quickly. They won't give up easily. Someone betrayed me!"

Mesia suddenly became agitated and struggled to get up.

Jack held him down firmly with one hand. He couldn't tell if the guy had been betrayed or if he was trying to abscond with the money, but it didn't matter. He just needed to keep an eye on him and hand him over to that old fox Ray King first thing tomorrow morning.

"Don't get agitated. Your injuries don't allow you to move. Ray King said he's taken control of your team. I'll be here to protect you, and the LAPD will provide support as needed. You're safe here."

Mesia's emotions gradually calmed down, but he was still muttering to himself, "Please be careful. They've hired professional assassins. I've been avoiding them. Be careful, please."

Perhaps due to the sedatives in the IV, Mesia, now relaxed, fell into a deep sleep again.

Jack habitually reached for his phone to check the time, only to remember that his iPhone 6 was completely destroyed. Just then, Nolan quietly pushed open the door and peeked in, glancing at the sleeping patient on the bed and waving to him.

"What time is it?" Jack didn't wear a watch, and it was very inconvenient without his phone.

"Uh, it's just past 10. Carrie gets off work at 12, so I was planning to take her home later. I came to see you first." Nolan's expression was slightly unnatural.

"Really, it wasn't because she thought you were in the way and kicked you out?" Jack joked with a laugh.

Joking aside, having someone with him made it less boring than before. The two chatted in the corridor outside the ward, from the interior design of Nolan's house to the muscle car model that Jack liked.

Before they knew it, it was 12 o'clock. Nolan hurriedly said goodbye to Jack and left, looking like he couldn't wait to spend the night with his beauty.

*Is he still so eager at this age?* Thinking about how he had controlled his emotions well even though he had fired a gun today, Jack felt quite proud of himself.

At this moment, a young Latina nurse who looked a little thin approached him.

"Hi, I'm here to transfer a patient to the ICU for examination, to check for internal bleeding."

Jack looked at her name tag with some vigilance and gestured, "No problem, uh, can I see your ID?"

"No problem." The nurse handed over her ID card.

"Susan Taylor, how long have you been working at this hospital?" Although the photo on the ID card matched the person, Jack was still a little uneasy.

"A long five." The nurse shrugged, and seeing Jack's surprised expression, explained with a smile.

"Five months in the ICU, five years at the hospital, uh… and I start work at five in the evening."

Jack felt relieved, but still said, "Okay, but I have to go with you."

"No problem." The nurse skillfully lifted the bed rails and pushed the bed out of the room.

Watching the nurse push Mesia into the ICU ward and close the door, Jack continued to wait idly at the door. He looked up and saw Nolan and Carrie, who had already taken off her white coat, walking over chatting and laughing.

"Hi, what are you doing here?" Carrie was a little surprised to see Jack.

"The nurse said there are some post-operative examinations, and the patient needs to be temporarily transferred to the ICU."

"But I just talked to his surgeon, and he said he would come to do the post-operative examinations himself." Carrie was a little confused.

"Fuck!"

Jack finally realized something was wrong. The nurse hadn't slipped him a note, and hadn't given him a single flirtatious glance during their conversation. He'd previously thought she might have an unusual sexual orientation.

He shoved open the ICU ward door; it was indeed empty, and the door to the other ward was wide open.

"Where's the nearest elevator?" Jack turned to Carrie and asked. Mesia was still unconscious, and they needed to move him in a wheelchair, so they had to use the hospital elevator.

"I know, follow me." Nolan quickly pointed in the direction, and the two ran frantically. They barely made it past a corner of the corridor when they saw the elevator doors slowly closing. The Latina nurse and a bald, muscular man in a suit were standing inside, with Mesia in a wheelchair, head tilted, still unconscious.

[A/n: I know it is for the plot, but man, how can you leave him alone if you doubt her. You ran off to the moment you found someone to talk to. The great vigilant guy you are.]
