Reborn: The Rookie Detective

Chapter 45 45: 45-Angela's heartbreak

Jack was happy as he prepared a house warming party. He prepared a lavish meal and invited familiar colleagues from the Wilshire Precinct, as well as some new acquaintances, for a small party.

Among them were Dr. Scarlett from Central Hospital and the beautiful, cheerful Kara, who had recovered and was now a frequent visitor to the Wilshire Precinct. Kara idolized Hannah and vowed to become an LAPD officer.

Detective Hunter and his wife were also present, making Commander Gray, with his stern face, appear somewhat reserved. Clearly, Hannah, Tim, and Angela weren't the only officers who idolized them.

Halfway through the party, Zoe and Maureen, two elegant women in formal attire, made a stunning entrance, captivating everyone present. Fortunately, American police officers—or perhaps only those at the Wilshire Precinct—didn't usually have a strong sense of hierarchy in their daily lives, and everyone enjoyed themselves immensely.

Finally, the day arrived for Hannah's departure from the LAPD. Today was her last day at the Wilshire Precinct. Since she was going to Quantico, everyone was more than just reluctant to part; they were sending their best wishes to this Texas girl.

As one of the precinct's most attractive officers, Hannah might not be the most approachable, but she was everyone's darling. Although she had a slight fear of men, as long as she didn't constantly have physical contact with them, her cheerful personality and sweet looks meant she had quite a few male friends.

Having received a whole bunch of gifts, Hannah glanced at Jack, who could only obediently present her with a gift he had prepared beforehand—a sandalwood carving of a large-headed doll.

Last night, to make this little trinket presentable, Jack reluctantly spent a system coin to upgrade his woodworking skill to "proficient." Of course, part of the reason was that he found the basic woodworking skill wasn't enough to support his renovation of his new home.

After wasting a lot of materials, the currently penniless officer had no choice but to forcibly upgrade his skill by one level.

Looking at the cartoon doll that bore a striking resemblance to herself, Hannah was captivated. She carefully put it away before going with Jack to the armory to collect their equipment and begin their final day of patrol.

Thankfully, it was another ordinary day—no gunfights, no murders, just a few traffic tickets. The city seemed unusually normal for Los Angeles.

Back at the police station in the evening, the other teams had also had no incidents, except for Nolan and Nyla's team, who had arrested a scantily clad, sexy woman.

Seeing the woman striking a provocative pose while being photographed and having her file recorded, Jack chuckled and patted Nolan on the shoulder.

"What did you do to her? That sexy girl's dress strap broke."

Nolan, who was filling out a report, looked speechless. "I caught this lunatic at the valet parking lot of a five-star hotel. She tried to attack a waiter with a knife just because her car was slightly scratched."

"When I handcuffed her, she struggled desperately, and ended up tearing her dress and exposing herself."

Tsk, Jack shook his head. Luckily, this was America. In his previous life, he had seen many crazy women who did all sorts of things to resist law enforcement.

"Thank you for your hard work, ma'am." Nolan finished filling out the report and went forward to thank his colleagues who assisted with the recording.

As he walked, he sincerely explained to the sexy woman, "Please believe me, I didn't mean to expose you like that."

"I've asked the bystander who was taking pictures to delete all the photos."

As he spoke, Nolan locked her in the temporary detention cell.

The hot woman, with an air of defiant arrogance, said, "You have no idea who I am, do you?"

Nolan replied businesslike, "Your name is Astrid Heather. You have no criminal record, no notable offenses."

The hot woman snorted, her nostrils flaring towards him, adopting a haughty attitude: "What's your name?"

Nolan had seen plenty of this kind of person over the past few months. Pointing to his name tag, he said, "My name is John Nolan, badge number 25253. If you want to file a complaint, that's your right."

"Oh, believe me, something will be 'filed' for you soon," Astrid Heather seemed to have a hidden meaning in her words.

Nolan closed the cell door, looking nonchalant, and didn't respond further. Jack, who had witnessed the whole scene, frowned, feeling a strange sense of déjà vu about it.

At this moment, a dejected Angela walked over with Hannah by her arm. "Are you two gentlemen free now? Come drink with me. I'm going to get myself drunk tonight."

Jack hesitated for a moment, not speaking. Since deciding to stop being a "player," he had consciously controlled his attitude in front of other women.

The good-natured Nolan, obviously unaware of this, asked with concern, "What's wrong, Angela?"

"She checked Wesley's phone and thinks he cheated on her," Hannah explained for her.

"And then were found making out?" Jack, his gossip-loving nature instantly aroused, unconsciously chimed in.

Angela glared at him with her big eyes, making him jump.

"I apologized to him, but he didn't forgive me. I think it's over between us."

Seeing her dejected look, Hannah comforted her best friend, "If he really loves you, he'll understand. Maybe you just need some time."

She then pulled Angela along, and the four of them went to their usual little bar.

To comfort her heartbroken friend, Hannah treated them to a bottle of expensive whiskey.

It was clear Angela really liked Wesley; after a few drinks, she started recounting her unhappy childhood.

In her words, the reason she was so insecure about this relationship was because her father had left home when she was young, abandoning her mother and five children, and how her elderly mother had struggled to raise her and her four brothers.

So, although she had disguised herself as a tomboy since childhood, she secretly longed for someone to rely on. She was convinced that Wesley was her soulmate, which led her to do something so irrational.

Nolan and Jack, listening nearby, broke out in a cold sweat and whispered among themselves.

"Do you think she'll pull out a gun and kill us when she sobers up?" Jack asked nervously.

Nolan seemed worried: "I'm probably okay, but you're definitely dead. You were the one trying to get information out of her."

Jack was also a little uneasy. His psychology skills had always been at a beginner level; he'd only tried it out because he couldn't resist the urge. Who knew this seemingly tomboyish woman would open up so easily?
